How many homes did you look at before buying one?

We keep walking in to them and turning around immediately. I feel like we will never find anything that we deem livableChat Icon We've looked at about 15 so far, and I guess that's not a lot, but I can see we have a long journey ahead of ourselvesChat Icon

online....I couldnt keep track....In person....between 20-30

Some we just did not even walk into. It was eaither on a busy road or really run down. It was annoying when the picture on the website was obviously airbrushed.

Honestly- not enough. We'd seen tons online, but this was one of the first houses we bought.

My advice- be very, very picky. We are going to move back to LI next year (wasn't part of the plan till DD arrived) and we learned a lot from this experience.

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

We looked at about 30.

I think by the time you get to that point you know exactly what you want and when you walk into the right house, you know right away.

I would suggest you keep looking because seeing more houses definitely helps you to define what you're looking for. I was really surprised at how much changed as far as our requirements went.

Good luck!

probably around 50 or so - a lot!
It's always a good idea to look at a lot - to get ideas of what you want and don't want.

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

We've looked at about 30 houses in person between open houses and our Realtor.

Our offer was just accepted last night!

Same thing with us. We looked at over 30 houses in person, hundreds online between MLSLI and Optimum online.

When we pulled up to the house we bought, we knew it was "home".

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

Online - hundreds possibly.

In person - we would look Saturday's and Sunday's all day from 10am-5pm. We'd look at about 10-15 houses a day and we did this for about 7-8 weeks. So, it was time consuming, exhausting, and educational as we realized what we wanted, what was a wish list item, etc

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

Actually going in a house to look.........definitely under 20.

We used to drive around the areas first........there were some nice houses we saw online, then we mapped it and did dozens and dozens of drive bys which saved us a lot of wasted time going into houses since we knew we werent liking the neighborhood/area. Online is very, very deceiving........

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

Online - too many to count...drive-by's - a few dozen. Actual, in person, houses - 180. We put in 8 offers...2 were accepted - we walked from one and bought the 2nd.

It was a long, arduous process that left us feeling frustrated and quite frankly, p!ssed off a lot. We spent over 16 months looking for a house and while the process was trying...it definitely educated us. A lot.

In the end, after declaring a "break" from the hunt...the house next door to where we had been living for almost 6 years went up for sale...and that's the one we bought. It's funny...now. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

ALOT! Too many to count, plus drivebys and probably 1000s online. DH and I would spend hours upon hours just going through MLS (he has access to the records) and printing out houses we liked. I got very discouraged until we found the house we finally moved into

Over a hundred over an 18 month time span. I wasn't working , so it basically became my full-time job. Chat Icon

We made 5 offers, 3 of which ended up in bidding wars. Our final offer was made in the driveway, the same day the house went on the market (it was the realtors open house). We were already their 2nd offer.

To think we didn't want to see the house because it was a ranch and DH didn't want to miss his haircut appt! Chat Icon Thank god our realtor convinced otherwise!!!! Chat Icon

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

We looked at 10. Our price range (4 yrs ago) was up to 300K. We saw some crap! We ended up buying a 4BD expanded ranch in Islandia for 287. It is a nice neighborhood with big plots and close to shopping. It is a starter house for us as it is in CI schools which were not acceptable to us. If you have a lower budget I would suggest looking in Nesconset, Kings Park, Lake Grove, etc. You may find some good deals. Or look for a smaller house(2 BD) with a big property that can be added on to-building a BD is a piece of cake!

Re: How many homes did you look at before buying one?

on-line hundreds, but in person with REA or open houses, I would say close to 75. We did a lot of open houses without our REA. It was easier to just walk in and out of open houses if you want. Look in the paper or on MLSLI for the open houses and map them out and go all day on a Sat or Sun. We saw 15 houses in one weekend once. It's crazy, so take notes about each house and what you liked and didn't like about it. We even went to see houses out of our price range to see what they were offering. Try to enjoy the process, but keep looking until you find the one! GL!
