How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
Just curious as I've always found it interesting when I meet someone who is "Pro-Life" yet they're also in favor of the death penalty.
If anyone who is a "yes" would care to explain their position I'd love to hear it because I, personally, find that stance a little contradictory.
Thanks!

I am pro-life and very against the death penalty. Aside from me not thinking it should be legal to take anyone's life, I don't think it makes sense. It actually seems like an easy out vs life in prison with no chance of parole. Furthermore, correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard that it's actually more costly to give someone the death penalty vs life in prison. I don't think it deters criminals either.

Interesting that you bring this up- my grandpa was VERY prolife and also VERY pro-death penalty- he used to actually argue with the priest at his church about it.
He believed in the innocence of the baby and punishing the guilty.

Re: How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
I'd like to say I'm pro-life and against dealth penaltly...but i'll be honest...if someone god forbid ever murdered someone I love, I'd want them to die (knowing the proof was 100%).
I look at the life of an innocent unborn child as very different than the life of a cold hearted murdered.
Had my child been murdered at the hands of Adam Lanza, and Adam Lanza had not taken his own life, I would want him GONE.
Some may say the two theories are hypocritical, but its ok. It's how I feel. We are ALL hypocrites in some areas of our morality, I bet that if we all listed on paper the things we were for and against at some point there would be a clash.

I'm pro choice but curious about the results. It seems like the conservative Holy Trinity is pro life, anti welfare, pro death penalty.
I guess I should add anti health care but that messes up my analogy!

I am Pro-Choice and always thought I was Pro-Death Penalty, until I saw the movie, The Life of David Gale....now I'm not so sure I believe in the Death Penalty at all. I know it sounds funny, but it got me really thinking

How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
My belief is that they can't be compared. People who are pro life are looking to protect what they believe is an innocent life who happens to need its mother's support until it is capable of living outside the womb.
People who support the death penalty are looking at the dangers a person who has been convicted of a violent crime poses on society.
I don't think they can genuinely be compared.
As for me, I don't think I can be defined as so clearly pro choice or pro life. I believe in strictet standards for abortion than roe v wade, but I don't believe in a full fledged ban on abortions. So what does that make me?
I'm conflicted on the death penalty. Mostly because I don't trust that the courts always get it right. For that reason, I err on the side of caution and am probably more against the death penalty. But, I am not firm on this.
Eta....in case it matters, I am not religious. I don't identify with any one particular religion and my beliefs on these issues have nothing to do with religion, god, or even morals really. More societal/legal issues, scientific issues, and philosophical issues.

I am pro choice and pro-deathy penalty. However, I could see how one could be pro life and pro death penalty - I don't believe the two ideologes are in conflict at all. On the one hand you are talking about an innocent fetus/ baby who was not asked to be conceived and who is without any guilt or wrongdoing. On the other hand, you have a convicted criminal - someone who has been given due process and convicted by his/her peers of " usually" a heinous crime. Yes, errors are made etc. but hopefully DNA analysis has taken some of the doubt out of the equation. I firmly believe tht tree are some individuals on this planet that do not deserve to share the same oxygen as the rest of us. Again, I am not pro-life but can understand how the two ideas can co-exist. How s a baby and a convicted murderer the same?

Very intersting points, as if they can even be equated in the same sentence.

Pro life and pro death penalty & agree with the above on how they both can exist

I am pro life (for the most part) and anti death penalty.
I don't think it is my place to condem someone to death.
To the OP, I think you could ask the same question to those who are pro-choice and anti death penalty. That seeems a little contradictory too-protect the life of the violent criminal but not the innocent soul?

I think people who are anti-death penalty are so not to protect the life of the violent criminal. That's asinine. I lean towards anti-death penalty because 1. As a PP said, the courts are wrong many times. and 2. As another PP said, I've heard that the death penalty is far more costly to the taxpayer than life in prison. and 3. I think it's an easy way out for a lot of these rightfully convicted psycho killers.

I agree...
I am pro choice... and I am pro death penalty (with proof positive it is the correct person who committed the crime)

Just playing devil's advocate but putting an unborn baby and a cold blooded murder in the same sentence seems a little bit like a faulty analogy.
So I can see how someone can be pro-life and pro-death penalty. I assume they look more at the choice. A baby does not have a choice while a criminal has a conscious choice of committing a crime and murdering someone.
For the record...I am pro-choice and pro-death penalty.

Pretty much hit it on the head here!!!!!
I am Pro-Life but as I wrote in the pro-life post, my views on the death penalty are also that it is a "grey area."

The contention as I have been made to understand is a life is a life is a life, be it a fetus, a baby or a grown adult so how can one choose between the two?
Who's to say a cold blooded murderer can't repent for their sins?
Who are we to decide who dies and who does not die?

I definitely understand the contention -- I do. But I guess I'm just trying to get into the mind of a pro-lifer in why they believe what they believe. Doesn't mean their logic doesn't have a flaw to it, but I would assume this is the thought process they have at times.
I'm sure there are plenty of pro-lifers who are 100% against both abortion and the death penalty because of the "life is a life" argument. But just as likely there are those who choose the logic I was saying, even if it is a bit flawed.

Re: How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
I think the premise of being pro-life is that the baby is innocent, whereas the rapist/murderer who kills a bunch of people is not. If a family member of mine is murdered I would like the murderer to get the death penality. No compassion there.
Actually, if someone tortures and murders someone I don't know, like an innocent child walking home from school, I would still like the perp given the death penality.
