Re: How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
I can't answer yes or no to this bc my views are torn on this issue. On one hand I don't feel it is our place to condemn a person to death...but if that person has no regard for the life of others and will continue to be a danger to society, then what's the proper course of action? Both lifelong incarceration and the death penalty cost tax payers BILLIONS. I don't like the idea of "playing god" on any level...but I have no real solution and when I hear of stories where people kill children or do horrible horrible things I find myself hoping they die...even though I don't agree with playing god.
As another PP stated...the problem with the death penalty is that our system is flawed and there are innocent people who have been put to death. Those are innocent lives that cannot be brought back.
in regards to how that relates to abortion...I see both the relation and also how the two are very different. As someone else stated...a convicted felon had a choice...whereas a baby doesn't. I wish less people would rely on abortion as a form of birth control...but there are others who have been raped, have medical reasons etc and I would never deny them that right.
I guess you could say I am pro-choice but I think we need better education so that people can make better choices to begin with and have less need for an abortion (obv. that sentiment does not apply to all cases...but I do think too many teens / young ladies get pregnant and abort bc they can't afford it or didn't use protection and in that case it should be a forethought not an afterthought)

Some "people" need the death penalty. Look at Ted Bundy, he escaped from jail twice and continued to kill after his escapes. He was sadistic and wouldn't have stopped. I don't think the death penalty should be handed out indiscriminately but yes, I think some people deserve it. I don't believe that a life is a life. I don't believe in repenting (I am not religious) and most who get the death penalty committed particularly heinous crimes. Sorry, but after they have committed those crimes I do not believe we should place any value on their life.

Not that this has anything to do with the question but those horrible, violent criminals were all once innocent babies (fetuses) too. I am 100% pro choice and conflicted on the death penelty.

Just playing devil's advocate but putting an unborn baby and a cold blooded murder in the same sentence seems a little bit like a faulty analogy.
So I can see how someone can be pro-life and pro-death penalty. I assume they look more at the choice. A baby does not have a choice while a criminal has a conscious choice of committing a crime and murdering someone.
For the record...I am pro-choice and pro-death penalty. exactly!! I'm pro-life and pro death penalty. IMO you can't even compare an innocent child to a cold heartless murderer. I don't even understand this analogy. It doesn't make sense to me how anyone can even compare.

IMO it's the perfect example why pro-life is a misnomer. To me, if you are "pro-life" you are for the life of everyone including convicted murderers on death row.

Re: How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
I think these are rather different issues as another poster pointed out.
However, I am pro-life and for the most part, against the death penalty. My stance on being pro-life, while very strong before, was completely solidified this weekend when I went to a museum that displayed a (real) aborted fetus in a jar. It looked so much like a baby and sent chills down my spine.
Sometimes, I waver on my death penalty stance...especially after an atrocious crime has been committed.

I am pro choice but I have very mixed feelings on the death penalty. I think the actual penalty is fine. My issues come from how many people are wrongly accused.
In law school I did extensive research on the wrongly accused. It is mind blowing how many people are sitting/ were sitting on death row for crimes they did not commit.

Pretty much hit it on the head here!!!!!
I am Pro-Life but as I wrote in the pro-life post, my views on the death penalty are also that it is a "grey area."

I think abortion should be legal, but for a much shorter period of time and I think adoption is the most ethical choice. So I am technically pro choice, but with more restrictions. I am against the death penalty because of the possibility of an innocent person being put to death.

Just curious as I've always found it interesting when I meet someone who is "Pro-Life" yet they're also in favor of the death penalty.
If anyone who is a "yes" would care to explain their position I'd love to hear it because I, personally, find that stance a little contradictory.
Thanks!
I am against both. I find it very difficult to believe someone can be against one and not the other. As i stated on a differerent thread.. this is one of the reasons I am Indenpenent... I have a hard time with political affiliation because of this.

I'm torn on this... I'm pro life...
I see where maybe there shouldn't be the death penalty.... But on the flip side, not all murderers are sorry and repenting afterwards. To give them life in prison, creates an extra tax burden on the innocent. If there was a death penalty in place, then by committing murder they know that they take that chance of being caught and facing punishment.

Because the words 'pro-life' literally mean FOR LIFE. So, IMO, to call oneself pro-life and then say one is always pro-death penalty is a terrible contradiction. As an above poster said, if those are your views than you are anti-abortion or anti-choice, and pro- death penalty.
For the record, I am pro-choice and anti-death penalty, in ALL circumstances.

When someone is saying they are pro-life they are using the common term to align themselves with those who share their stance on abortion. They are not saying they are literally "for life". I don't understand how anyone doesn't get that. It's not like each of us made up these terms for ourselves. I'm not even pro-life, I'm just saying.

I totally get what you are saying, but I think it has a lot to do with the context. We're talking about the abortion debate, and the two common terms for the sides are pro-life and pro-choice.
For example, I am pro-life. However, if instead, I called myself anti-choice, that would be a misnomer too if we're extending these terms to encompass all political, social, philosophical, etc. debates because I am certainly not anti-choice when it comes to marriage.
Also, if someone said s/he was pro-choice, the argument could be made that s/he is not for the choice of the baby, so that person should really be labeled with pro-women's choice, not just pro-choice.
Ultimately, I think that the two common terms used are pro-life and pro-choice in terms of the abortion debate. If everyone argued semantics, then we could go in so many different angles and reconstruct the entire vocabulary of the argument. Perhaps the language should be changed in certain arenas of life; however, it seems pretty clear that, in this context, pro-life and pro-choice are referring to abortion only and not to everything.
Anywho...

Pro-lifers are protecting life, whereas a rapist/murderer takes life. If you were in the sandy hook school with a gun, would you have not shot the killer because you are against taking the life of murderers?

Re: How many Pro-Life supporters are for the Death Penalty? Poll Attached
Just to clarify - I totally understand the jargon being used and the context. My initial comment was in direct response to someone saying "I don't understand how you can think that..." so I was simply explaining that to some of us, there is a very clear reason for 'how we can think that'.
That said, I abhor the term 'pro-life' whatever the context. It not only implies that some of us are against life, but it doesn't make sense. Many who are vehemently 'pro-life' are so in ALL cases - which means that in some of those cases the LIFE of the mother is not as important as that of the child. Further, yes, if you adopt the phrase pro-life to describe yourself I personally believe it is hypocritical to then say you are for the death penalty. That is my opinion, but there it is. Are there some people who have done certain things that make me wish those people weren't alive? Yes. But that is not for me or another person or other people to decide. If we use the death penalty we are doing to someone exactly what we are trying to teach NOT to do - kill. That, again, is my opinion.
Just like some here have said they don't or can't understand how one can equate the 'life' of an innocent, unborn child to that of a convicted criminal, I personally do not understand how someone else can say they are support killing someone in one circumstance but not another. And finally, just to clarify, I don't think abortion is killing because I don't think life begins at conception. And I am pregnant, for the record.

Not arguing or anything, but I always thought full life didn't start at conception. Now that I am pregnant, I changed my mind. At 12 weeks my baby was sucking his thumb and looked so cute. I am pro-choice, though, because I don't feel what other women do affects my life.

Not that this has anything to do with the question but those horrible, violent criminals were all once innocent babies (fetuses) too. I am 100% pro choice and conflicted on the death penelty. So I guess science just needs to come up with a way to test the genes of fetuses, then we can kill all those potential horrible, violent criminals before they are born...
