Not that this has anything to do with the question but those horrible, violent criminals were all once innocent babies (fetuses) too. I am 100% pro choice and conflicted on the death penelty.

So I guess science just needs to come up with a way to test the genes of fetuses, then we can kill all those potential horrible, violent criminals before they are born... Chat Icon

This is obviously not reasonable or possible, but it brings up kind of an interesting point, given the abortion/crime analysis in Freakonomics. Basically, they demonstrate how declines in crime are directly correlated with the legalization of abortion (fewer unwanted children = fewer criminals).

I am pro-life on all counts, anti-death penalty.

Pro-lifers are protecting life, whereas a rapist/murderer takes life. If you were in the sandy hook school with a gun, would you have not shot the killer because you are against taking the life of murderers?

I am prolife and anti death penalty but I will say that I think the above is a stretch. As peaceful as I am, I would do what I had to do in self defense or in defense of another. I would not equate that to sentencing someone to the death penalty(even though I am against it).

I am pro choice and not sure how I feel about the death penalty.

I also agree that if you are Pro life it should encompass all life so IMO the correct things is to say you are anti abortion pro death penalty (if those are your beliefs).

Because the words 'pro-life' literally mean FOR LIFE. So, IMO, to call oneself pro-life and then say one is always pro-death penalty is a terrible contradiction. As an above poster said, if those are your views than you are anti-abortion or anti-choice, and pro- death penalty.

For the record, I am pro-choice and anti-death penalty, in ALL circumstances.

I totally get what you are saying, but I think it has a lot to do with the context. We're talking about the abortion debate, and the two common terms for the sides are pro-life and pro-choice.

For example, I am pro-life. However, if instead, I called myself anti-choice, that would be a misnomer too if we're extending these terms to encompass all political, social, philosophical, etc. debates because I am certainly not anti-choice when it comes to marriage.

Also, if someone said s/he was pro-choice, the argument could be made that s/he is not for the choice of the baby, so that person should really be labeled with pro-women's choice, not just pro-choice.

Ultimately, I think that the two common terms used are pro-life and pro-choice in terms of the abortion debate. If everyone argued semantics, then we could go in so many different angles and reconstruct the entire vocabulary of the argument. Perhaps the language should be changed in certain arenas of life; however, it seems pretty clear that, in this context, pro-life and pro-choice are referring to abortion only and not to everything.

Anywho...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Interesting that you bring this up- my grandpa was VERY prolife and also VERY pro-death penalty- he used to actually argue with the priest at his church about it.

He believed in the innocence of the baby and punishing the guilty.
