How Much Did You Gain?
My cousin is pregnant with her 1st and FREAKING out about her weight gain. The nurse said she is 5-6 lbs higher than where she would like her to be. I think she's INSANE! She's gained 18 lbs and is almost 24 weeks. I told her she is fine and most weight gain is in the 2nd trimester, at the end she was balance out. She said "I hope not".
I'm wondering if I'm totally off base here. The nurse freaked her out the other day because the heartrate was 150 and they nurse said heartrates are usually 120-150. Right there makes me think she shouldn't listen to the nurse and her weight really isn't a problem. And she is 5'6" and not overweight at all to start!

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 45 lbs. with my first and 35 lbs. with my second DC... my doctor never made me worry, for that I was grateful since I was already stressed out. I would tell her to worry and your body will gain what it needs to.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
My first pregnancy I gained just under 30 lbs in total.
This time around I'm 32 weeks and have gained 18 lbs so far. But most of my weight gain actually happened in the first trimester and early 2nd trimester. I've started to slow down now with the gaining. So, it definately evens out.
If it helps, I'm 5'6 too. I started higher than I would have liked. My "normal" pre-pregnancy weight is 135, but I had gained a lot right before getting pregnant and I was 152
My doctors have said nothing to be about weight gain. If she was gaining like 60 lbs then I could see them saying something, but it sounds like she's well within the normal range. She should just ignore the doctor when she says anything to her about it.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 29 lbs in total. My doctor said that was right on track and that 30 is about the average. She was adamant about me not gaining anymore than 35. Your cousin is fine!
ETA: DD's heart rate was always in the 140-170 range. She's perfectly healthy. The doctor was never concerned with her numbers.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 60 lbs with my first, but I was a bit underweight before I got pregnant, and VERY swollen at the end. The doctor never said a word about my gain, and I lost literally 30 lbs in the first 48 hours.
I weighed more when I got pregnant this time, and I'm up about 35 lbs (and likely wont gain much more, I hope.)

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 49 lbs. I exercised throughout my entire pregnancy and still gained this much. Most of it came in the third trimester. My doctor always made comments and made me feel awful at each appointment. When I went for my checkup at 8 weeks I had lost all of it except for about 8 lbs and he complimented me on it. I told him I knew it would come off and he shouldn't have made me feel so bad about it.

How Much Did You Gain?
I lost during both pregnancies.
150 heart rate sounds pretty perfect. My kids were always 150-160 and sometimes 170 and the doctors and techs always said that was perfect and normal.

How Much Did You Gain?
Thanks ladies! I think the nurse in her doctor's office should be quiet honestly. I told her DS's heartrate was ALWAYS over 150 so the nurse is wrong. Her baby is fine. And she already obsessed with the fact that she's gaining weight (I keep telling her to stop) so for her doctor to tell her to slow it down is not healthy for anyone. She told me she was STARVING today and I told her I was eating a foot long hero for lunch. She said she is gaining too much weight because she is eats poorly so she has to slow down. Now I'm worried between her own self image and the nurses comments, she's not going to be healthy at all.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
In each of my pregnancies I gained a lot for where I was "supposed" to be. With my DS I gained 55lbs. Some people gain more and my doctors never said a word.
My OB did say (after it was ME who wouldn't let it go) that the more you gain the harder it is to lose, but that was it. As long as she is eating a variety of healthy foods, she's doing her part. I wouldn't be listening to that nurse, honestly. She has the rest of her life as a mom to receive bad advice and stupid info

How Much Did You Gain?
I am 5'7 and I started at 134 and ended at 157 so I gained 23 pounds.
ETA: one of the doctors at my practice really did stress staying within the 25-35 pound weight gain range.
In the beginning I had a very hard time embracing the weight gain. I think it's normal for some women to feel uncomfortable with it. The only other time our bodies change so radically in a short period of time is puberty.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
It depends on your pre pregnancy weight. if you are considered normal weight, 25-35 lbs. if you are heavier, they might tell you that less weight gain is necessary. My friend was told 10lbs. She is on the heavier side and at 35 weeks she had put on 8lbs. I am pretty thin. I was told 25-30lbs both times.
With DD1: First trimester I put on 12lbs Second trimester 4lbs Third trimester 12 lbs.
With DD2 so far First Trimester 3oz (I was super sick) Second trimester 15lbs Just started my third trimester, so we will see. I am thinking I will end up around the same as last time.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 45lbs with one and 50lbs with the next one. I am pretty tiny to start with so nobody was really concerned. I gained the most in the 3rd tri the first time and with the second I gained most right away and then leveled off. And with that one I think my DD's heart rate was close to that. She is healthy as can be. All pregnancies are different. I wouldn't worry too much if I was her.
As for the losing it part, I lost it both times by 4mos and the second time was actually easier.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I am 30 weeks (and 5'6" too) and gained 27 pounds so far. At 22 weeks, I was up 13 pounds. My doctor says I'm fine.
Oh, and my baby's heart rate has always been in the 150's or sometimes even 160's. They say girls have higher heart rates. So I think that nurse is off base. What does the actual doctor say to your cousin about these issues?

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
Everyone reacts differently to pregnancy and it's unnecessary to stress out about staying within the recommended gain as long as she's eating healthy and listening to her body. I gained 45 lbs with both pregnancies. With my first, I started out the pregnancy at my heaviest. I had severe swelling and at one point gained 15 lbs in 4 weeks mostly from the swelling. I lost over 30 lbs within the first week after delivery and the rest by 6-8 weeks PP.
I started out my second pregnancy 25 lbs lighter than my first, ate healthier and was more active. In addition to eating better, I was diagnosed with glucose intolerance and was on the GD diet. I still gained the same amount of weight although I had a harder time losing the last 15 or so lbs.
She shouldn't stress out about it or compare herself to anyone else. She certainly shouldn't be dieting or be starving because she's worried about every little pound. Her weight gain sounds totally normal. I wouldn't put much stock in anything that nurse says.

How Much Did You Gain?
Your cousin sounds like my bff. I want to strangle her OB. She goes hiking every day and is now freaking out that she hurt her leg and can't hike and needs to stop eating. She gets yelled at during every appt. I don't know exactly how much she's gained but it's definitely less than 35lbs and she looks great.
I gained about 30, and that was with being really sick the whole time. Also, DD's heart rate was never under 160.
This nurse should be fired.

Re: How Much Did You Gain?
I gained 50 lbs with my daughter--I was retaining a lot of water at the end. I wasn't overweight to start (5'9", 128 lbs). People are always shocked when I tell them I gained 50 lbs. Drs never mentioned my weight gain. I lost all the baby weight plus another 10 lbs shortly after DD was born (thank you BFing lol)
