How much income do YOU think is needed

For a family of 4, living on Long Island to be comfortable? Comfortable to me means saving, vacations, newer cars, eating out, etc. The numbers in my mind are different for Nassau and Suffolk county

How much income do YOU think is needed

I think where you live and what you live in will greatly skew those numbers. Do you want a large house, an apartment, a condo, what towns are you looking at, how high are the taxes? For us we make a good salary and are just comfortable. People around us make a heck of alot more. I could live in a different town and I would have much more disposable cash but we chose not too.

For me it's $150-180. My mortgage isn't every large, we do have student loans that are $1200 a month so we have that bill. But to save, pay my bills, vacations and everything else I would say $150. It will be relative to what your needs are

We made around that ($180k) and we had a $450k ranch and was able to go out to eat, bought a hybrid car, etc, but we also didn't have any debt (pay credit cards off each month and no student loans).

We have survive as a family of 3 on much less than what people are saying. It's all about personal choices. Housing choices etc.

agreed. we are in the middle range of what has been posted with 100k in student loan debt... no living comfortably for us here. if we werent paying 2000+ a month toward loans, we'd be fine for our lifestyle. nothing extravagant but we'd be comfortable, in a better position to live our lives as well as save.

Re: How much income do YOU think is needed

150-180k. You are not eating out every week, but you can still eat out, take a vacation for about $4k, have a pair of $35k vehicles, fully fund your 401k, and have a 650k home with $12k in property taxes. If you have student loan debts you would either have to earn more, have a less expensive home, and or cheaper vacation.

Yes... except we pay for full time daycare right now too. I guess we could afford to eat out more but feel the expense isn't worth it. Vehicles cost a little less. House probably worth that now but paid less initially. South shore mid Nassau.

She didnt say survival though. Taking vacas each year and having new cars, savings etc is more like very comfortable

I'm in in eastern Suffolk I think $150k Is very tough to do here. Our taxes alone are over 1k a month. I think a family of 4 needs at least 180k or higher to live comfortably on LI. I think $200k is more realistic if you have expenses like child care which is very expensive.

we live in western nassau with 1 baby who is in daycare and we make about 150k before taxes. We are doing some work on the outside of our house (pavers, driveway etc), and going to a destination wedding in the caribbean this summer. We order out once a week usually, and we both do happy hours with work at least once a month. I would say we live pretty comfortably. We don't have any student loans, and no credit card/ debt or other debt. We both save to our retirement accounts, 529, and TDA, but I feel like we don't really save a lot besides that. Lately I feel like the baby expenses make it difficult to save as much as we used to.

So while we definitely don't struggle, and are able to go out and do things without having to worry about being able to pay for it, I think if we made closer to 200k combined we would be a lot more comfortable, and would be saving more.

Too many factors. Debt, taxes, lifestyle. It's not just about having the newest car or going in a ton of vacations. It's how you go about getting those things. The first thing people have to do is be realistic. If you're dillusional, you're fkd. And it's sad to say, A LOT of ppl are not in touch with reality.

Someone making 50k a year can live a much more comfortable life than someone making 200k a year. How you spend/save matter more than the actual salary.

So true! For anyone interested, here's an interesting article Why one couple feels like they're scraping by on $500k a year

I'd say 200k to 250k. We're western Suffolk.

Obviously people do it on far less, but they tend to be on tight budgets which isn't my definition of comfortable.

I get this. The definition of comfortable varies. Mine would be:

Good schools/neighborhood/library etc
Personal trainer / gym membership
Occasional massages and facials
Shop organic and premade meals for convenience
At least 1-2 $5000 vacations or long weekends
Nice Dinners out for special occasions
Entertain guests/holidays/parties which adds up
House renovations
Cleaning service
Landscaping service
College savings
Retirement savings
Other savings

Cars and clothes/shoes i can do with moderate prices lol

To struggle to me means i work but can't pay my basic bills and have nothing left over. Some may see struggling as keeping up with the Jones

Re: How much income do YOU think is needed

I would say 200-250k. We live in PA where it's a cheaper COL and I'd say we are comfortable with my DH making $150k, however the only debt we have is his new car, and a couple student loans, our home is paid for and my car is paid for.

This sounds about right. Student loans and daycare are also a big factor.
