How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
We just moved in December to our house so I just got our first real bill. It was for $353 . Now, mind you, my house is 3500 sq ft, 1 zone and that is for the gas and electric. All our appliances are gas and I love to cook. We also have a gas fireplace that we use all the time on the weekends. Am I justified for freaking out a bit?

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
We live on Staten Island and our monthly gas & electric run about $300 and we don't have a large house at all. I don't think I would be freaking over a $353 bill with such a big house.

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Thank you! I am coming from a 700 sq ft apartment in the city where I would freak if the bill came to $70! I guess this house ownership stuff is all sticker shock to me!!

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Our electric through NYSEG is about $65-70 a month for our house. I think it's cheaper here because our house is a decent size.
Heating oil- we only pay when they come to fill us up. It was about $350 last time, but that was a couple of months ago. We are pretty frugal with the heat.

How big is your house? Are your appliances electric?

My friend who has a gas fireplace stopped using it because it made her bills so high.

We have a high ranch and we pay $151 for electric and $280 for gas. We are on balanced billing. However, you can't participate in balanced billing until you're in your home for over a year. Keep in mind the bills are kind of on the high side because the price of fuel. It stinks but unfortunately, we don't have any other choice.

Thank you MaryBeth for the feedback. I just got an e-mail from PSE&G with the charge so I haven't seen the breakdown yet. I will post it once I get the actual bill. They don't have the breakdown online yet.

Pretty sure everything's electric- not sure of the size, it's a 3 bed room split level, so it's not huge but not tiny.

Our electric bill...on the budget is $280 a month (we have central air) and our heating bill (Keyspan) during the winter is $250 a month. We have a split level house with 2 families living there.

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Wow, so these prices are all across the board! From $65 - 70 all the way to over $500! I am really glad we have gas, not oil though since that seems to be much higher! Thank you all for your honest replys!! I will not complain anymore (at least not about this!!)

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Rough estimates.... my average electric bill will be $150 a month and our average monthly oil bill will also be about $150 a month (at 2.59 a gallon).

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Average bill would be about $250 combined. However for Nov and Dec the bill was about $400 combined due to using the heat ($90 electric and $310 gas). We have not switched over to a budget bill yet. But we have started to insulate the house better. We are in Queens, with Con-Ed, house is about 1600sq ft

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Ready to fall on your butts??? Last month... $ 658. We also live in Queens (Con Ed) don't have oil but have a fairly large house (@4000 SqF). I am at my wits end in trying to come up with ways to lower it. We put the heat down to 60 when we leave in the morning, 70 when I get home( I'm always freezing) and like 67 when we go to sleep. This is a newly constructed home so we have brand new windows so I know we are well insulated. But give me a break .

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
We only have electric and our bill is anywhere from $80 to $120 per month (the higher being at Christmas time with the decorations up)
ETA - We have been paying about $200 a month for oil (thank God for electronic thermostats )
Oh, and our house is a 1600 sq. foot ranch.

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
Which bill was $353?
We had a problem with the gas bill. The previous owner didn't report meter reads correctly and they were underbilled for 2 years. When they came in to read the meter we were billed for the difference.
Since we had the meter replaced 2 days after we closed we knew it was at 0 and that there was no way we could have a $600 gas bill. Keyspan adjusted it but it took them 2 months to do it properly.
We use gas for hot water, cooking and dryer. Bill is about $25-$30 a month.

Re: How much is your electric/gas bill (typically)?
I am in FL and everything is electric. A/C is always on (though the last month we've had the heat on), electric stove, we always leave 1 light on during the day because when I get home from work at 8pm I like to walk into the house with some light. The TV is on all day for the dog. Our electric bill was a little over $100 for last month.
Some cost saving tips we also do is close off all the rooms we are not using and only have the ceiling fans on in our bedroom and living room running all the time.
