How much money do you put into savings/investments a month?

I'm just wondering what the average is and if we are putting in too little...

How much money do you put into investments, 401K, TDA's, savings accts etc.

I meant to do more than $500 as an option but hit enter by accident and I can't edit the poll!



I guess I'll get an idea this anyway!

Savings: $2500
401K (Me): $400
401K (DH): $600

ETA: We don't own a home yet. We will soon and won't be putting this much into savings then....

We put my entire paycheck into savings (which varies by month). We live off DH's paycheck.

We max out our 401Ks and then put whatever extra we have after bills/mortgage are paid into savings. Higher than your top amount but most of it can't be touched for years.

haha can there be a negative option? because right now it seems like we're TAKING from savings, not adding to it.

At the very least, I have around $500.00 a month going into my 401K.

I also try to put SOMETHING into joint savings each week, even if it's only $25.00-$50.00.

DH and I both max out our 401ks and then we probably put another 20% of our salaries in to a savings account. He has other investments but I don't really count them.

We currently put about $400 mo into college savings, and a couple of hundred into savings for house repairs and maint. That is contstantly taken out though and replenished.

We have our 401K's that we contribute to each check, and DH's pension that he does pay into each check as well.

But we have come up with a plan that rather than put our left over cash into savings accts that earn next to nothing, we pay extra towards the principal on our mortgage each month. By doing that, we are knocking our mortgage down by YEARS and reducing the interest we pay greatly. We will have a 30 year mortgage paid off in half that time.
We figure- that's the best way to invest the few extra hundred we have a month- considering the horrible interest rates on savings accts, etc lately.

its really hard for us to save some months depending on whats going on (like if we have to buy anything for the house, events like birthdays, etc) but we try to save at least a few hundred a month after all our bills for the month are paid off.

In a good month, over $500. I always put in $100 into 401k, then we try to put about $800-$1,000 into savings for a house. But May kicked our assses and summer is proving no better.

I try to put at least $700-$1000 each month; it's hard with the house bills; but i do at least $700.

over $600 into 401k/month.
$100/m into life insurance policy investment
regular savings, usually nothing lately.

Savings? No such thing.. it just holds my money until I need to write out a check..

Jim has stock options so none there

Yep.. we'd be scr3wed if either of us loss our jobs

I'm one of "Those" typical middle class households. *Shrug*

About $4,000. We don't own a home yet either so saving very hard. No kids and no real expenses except Rent

$3,200+ into savings. We do own a small home but only have 1 vehicle, limited commuting costs and no children.

This will change when we look to upgrade to a larger house in the next few years. The small house is an annoyance sometimes but we wanted to be conservative in our finances at first.

We save most of my salary after automatic withdrawals.

With 2 (older) kids and a house, not much, or at least not as much as everyone else on here----
