How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
Specifically for families with children. Can you specify what industry he/she is in and if he changes are voluntary or not...trying to understand what DH is telling me. He is adamant that most people change jobs every 1-2 years indefinitely and this is normal. Maybe I'm in a bubble since I'm in healthcare and don't see it.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH has had several jobs in the past few years. He's in IT and a lot of companies are starting to outsource which leaves him jobless. It sucks but we're very hopeful that the job he has right now will be long term.

I am an attorney and I see lawyers changing firms all the time. It's the best way to increase your earnings in my area of law.
DH has. Union job so he has been there 10 years and will be there for the next 20.

DH is a professor and has only taught in his current school. I would be surprised if he ever left.

Dh has been at the same job and company since well before I even met him 8 years ago. He's in finance.
I don't think it's normsl, or s good idea, to change jobs every 1-2 years. I know people look at is lack of loyalty and salary driven which companies frown upon when looking at your resume.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is the main breadwinner, this is his 4th company, he was with his first company for 3 years, second for 2, third for 1, and he has been with this company for 10 months. He has more than tripled his salary in this process. Health care is not built like that, I am in health care.

It entirely depends on the industry. DH is a civil engineer, and it's expected to an extent to have high turnover of jobs for periods in your career. I didn't believe it either until I witnessed it. It is the standard to have bouts of changing jobs that often.

I think its odd to switch jobs every 1-2 years. I have had one job since college and have been there 15 years. My husband has been with his employer for almost 20 years.

I don't think it's common to change jobs every year or so. DH & I have each been at our current jobs for over 5 years, him closer to 10.

DH works in technology and has been at the same company for 16 years. Prior to that he moved around a couple of times after a few years due to wanted promotions and opportunities.
Unless they are just starting out, switching jobs every few years is a major red flag in most industries.

DH works in entertainment. So he has changed jobs three times since we've been married, and is currently unemployed because the show he was a part of was cancelled. Bouncing around is common in his industry though, because he is show based.
I am currently the breadwinner, and went from a job I was at for four years into this new one. It's not a great fit, so I'm struggling right now.

I do not think it is normal in most industries to change jobs every 1-2 years indefinitely. There are fields where moving around every couple of years is more common early on--my Dh is in the produce industry- he owns his own business and imports tropical fruit to NY and exports fruit from the Dominican Republic to Europe and Japan.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
My husband has a prototype packaging print studio and most employees have been there over 10 years. Almost all have children. From the file layout / mechanicals people to the printers etc., most seem to stick around. Younger employees have left for higher pay but quite a few ask to come back for the stability and benefits.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I am the breadwinner. I have been at my job for 5 years. While there are things that drive me crazy about it I'm not looking to move. This has been the longest I've been at a job but I never would change jobs yearly.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I'm in healthcare, I own a consulting firm. I also "freelance" as an employee for clients that need extra help. I usually stay with them one or two years but it's known when I start.
My DH owns a construction company, he was in a partnership that broke up a few years ago so the name changed but his "job" stayed the same.
In my field it's a big red flag when applicants change practices frequently. In DHs, usually people that are new to the field or have less experience bounce around.
Is your DH getting promoted or receiving increases of some sort when he changes jobs?

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
My DH is a digital design engineer and he was at his first company for 4 years (he left because we moved back to NY) and he's been at his current company for the past 14 years. He's considered switching jobs BUT right now he's on a really good executive path so it makes more sense for him to stay.
Sometimes, depending on your profession, it makes sense to move around but every 1-2 years sounds like a little much to me. I think some employers would see changing jobs that often as a red flag.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
Definitely depends on the field. I see a lot of people under 40 changing jobs that often especially under 30!
Some say it is the only way to get promotions and more money.
Someone in a high level HR position told me it's good to changes positions (not necessarily companies) every 3-5 years.

DH has been with the same company for 12 years. I switched every 2-3 years for very large increases, but I'm not the breadwinner.

You are correct.
It depends upon the industry.
What was considered "loyalty" 20-30 years ago is seen as strange and impossible in some industries today. In some industries, if you stay more than a certain amount of years at the same firm it is questioned by outsiders.
Academia, dwindling union jobs still subscribed to the long term loyalty theory... however, there is a flip side for the employee. If one wants to leave due to working conditions, it is impossible to leave. For example, I know once you have tenure, and a certain amount of years in education, you can't make a lateral move to another district without loosing a lot. Most districts won't even consider such a candidate.

Dh works in finance. He's been with his current company for I believe 8 years, but has had 3 different jobs. That being said, because they've all been internal transfers he's grossly underpaid. His last switch was to a role with much more responsibility and he didn't even get a raise. People hired after him with less experience started at 10-15k more. He's made more over the years, but reasons like that are why people switch. He could work at another company doing his job and easily start at 15-20k more than he makes now, not including his bonus.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I am the breadwinner, and I have been in my current position for 1 year, but have been with my company for 3 and a half years. My industry is extremely limited, in terms of available positions pertaining to this field, but the general skills and responsibilities I have can be utilized in other industries. Luckily I work for a great company, and do not see myself leaving anytime soon. Before working for this company, I changed jobs every 1-3 years, increasing my salary each time.

This seems to be the new thing now, changing jobs every few years.
My dh has been at his job almost 4 years and only because of layoffs. I have been at my job over 20 years.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I make more money than DH, and have been at my current job for 9 years. I'm a tenured teacher in a public school here on LI. Unless we relocate to a different state (which we've spoken about), I anticipate this is the only place I will ever work. DH is in public relations and works for a firm in Manhattan. He's had 3 different jobs over the last 7 years. He says its very common in that industry for people to be changing firms/positions fairly frequently.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
We are equal on paper, and neither has changed jobs, he owns his own glass business I am a teacher, I would think this is very dependent on the industry he is in, our jobs don't lend themselves to change except if I change schools
