Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH has been self-employed since 2004 and makes more money, although I carry the benefits.
I'm in health care and was at my last job for about 5 years. Before that I was at a couple of places 2-3 years.
I've been at my current company a little over 2 years and have no plans on leaving....it's so hard to get in here and the benefits and environment alone are why I stay.
I think it's common to job hop when you are young.

If you haven't reached an executive level, it's the best (and sometimes only) way to increase your salary and positon. At a higher level though, (VP ish) you can't come into an organization at that level and leave after a year or two- there's a learning curve, getting comfortable within an organization, making contacts, building relationships, learning how the organization runs politically and how to accomplish your goals within that structure .......there's NO way someone at that level should be jumping every 1,2 years ......at least if they expect to accomplish anything during their tenure.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
My DH has been with the same company for 8 years. He started out in a 2 year rotational period. In the last 6 year, he's had 2 different positions.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
Hes FDNY now so theres very little chance of him changing jobs.. (He will definitely rank up when the time comes)
Before that he was in Local 6A and luckily with a good company, he rarely went without work.
Hes only had 3 major jobs in the 14 years we've been together

this...
DH thinks he'll be with this company for a good long while, the company is amazing, but it took 3 jobs in 5 years to get to it. Every jump he's made has been a result of that company recruiting him, this company was hunting him for about 6 months (almost right after starting the last job) before he made the decision to go.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I think it's common to see a lot of movement between jobs early in one's career - but that's not necessarily expected to continue indefinitely. I know that when I hire, I expect to see some longevity in positions and commitment to employer.
I agree it depends on industry and profession.
Both DH and I have been with our current employers for over ten years - - me in increasing positions in that time. We both moved around a bit earlier in our twenties - but both expect/plan to stay in our current roles for the indefinite future.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH was the breadwinner (I worked but he made more) and didn't change jobs for 20 years....that's because he was in civil service.
Now he is retired and I make more than his pension - i have been here 5 years and no plans to change jobs anytime soon

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
We may be the exception to the rule but we have not changed jobs since moving to NY in 2009. I am the breadwinner and have been at the same firm since 2009. My DH changed jobs in a way in 2012 only because his company was bought out -- he stayed on post-merger. We both have had numerous coworkers come and go over those years but we have stayed on due to flexibility that we weren't willing to give up.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
My husband has wanderlust so we move cities every 5 years - Atlanta --> Seattle --> Durham, NC --> LI. We're in higher ed (not teaching) and we've never had trouble finding jobs (but then we have 20+ years each in the field).

I agree it depends on industry and profession.
My husband and I both contribute equally financially to the family and we both hold management level IT positions. We're both local government employees and I believe that he has been with his employer for about 18 years now. I started out my career working a corporate job for over 6 years, left that & worked at another company for a year before I was offered my current position. I've been here for over 7 1/2 years now. If things work out, we both plan to stay where we are until we can retire.
ETA: When I'm hiring new employees, I also expect to see some longevity in their positions and commitment to their employers, like the poster above. When I see a candidate that bounces around from job to job every year or two their resume goes in the trash.

This is the field I hope to end up in (not teaching either).
It's hard for me because I would LOVE longevity. In college I spent 4 years at my first job, 5 years at another, 4 years at a job after that. Subbing, and now being at a job I'm not loving (not in higher ed) is depressing. I just hope I'm not looked at negatively as I'm trying to find my footing.
I'm 32. I can't tell you how devastating it is not to have found a place I can log many years in. I thought I would be teaching by now, and that hasn't worked out, so I tried to switch gears, and THAT hasn't worked out.

DH has only changed jobs once. He is making significantly more money now but he works much longer hours. I think I liked our old lifestyle better when he was salaried and came home at a predictable hour everyday.

i work in IT. it's very common to leave every few years and go to other companies in order to get more money. it's harder to get raises internally. i was at my first job for 10 years and at my current job for 2 years. i dont picture leaving anytime soon.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is in the FDNY so he isn't changing jobs anytime soon - he has been promoted once and should be promoted at least one more time.
I have been with my company a very long time. I'm in the process of interviewing as my position is likely being eliminated and the folks I talked to are shocked I've been here this long. They say they generally see 3-5 years these days.
I like where I work and have a role that is constantly changing but, I also have had 2 roles here, various promotions and grade changes, and had a few major life events (marriage, two kids) so I was looking more for stability than change.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is a pilot and is with his second major airlines. The first filed bankruptcy and he jumped ship and now is with another major airline for the last 3-4 years.
I don't think it is a good idea to keep changing jobs because I always have the saying "last one in is the first one out" when it comes to layoffs

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is the bread winner in our fmaily. He has been with the same company for 15 years. He works for his alma mater. Started there as a student worker, got hired full-time after graduation. Went on to get his MS awhile working for the same school. Was promoted 3 times (his last title was Associate Director). His school merged (read was taken over) by another one. He retained his job, but under a new (lesser) title and now works as part of a larger team (he was a one-man-shop before).
DH loves his school, loves his co-workers, and loves his job. He will stay forever if he can.
BUT, he is very much of the old school mentality and has a lot of company loyalty.
I think changing jobs is fine if it is necessary. Changing jobs every 1-2 years is excessive. As others said, when I get resumes like that, they go in the "maybe" pile. And I always make sure to ask about it at interviews.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is in finance and in the last ten years his longest job is 2.5 years. His salary basically tripled in that amount of time and there is absolutely no way it would have if he didn't change companies. He is the breadwinner.
I was with my first company for 3 years, 2nd company for 1 year and decided to go back for my masters and I have been with my company now for 4 years but 2 different positions. I am thinking about looking around just for the increase in salary.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH has been with his job for 7 years this summer. I am with my job for 1 1/2 yrs right now b/c I stayed at home with DS for a few years. Prior to that I was at my last job for 6 yrs.
I guess it depends on the industry, but for the most part, I dont know anyone that changes jobs that often.

I was the breadwinner. I worked as a manager at a rather prominent retail store for almost 14 years. When the company downsized I got laid off. DH is now working 2 jobs

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH has changed jobs 2x in 4 years. He is in the insurance industry. I think its very common to change companies at least in dh industry. He has been offered multiple offers each year to make a move. I find it very stressful and told him not to consider any offers for a long while.
I know my BIL who is in Banking has changed jobs 3x in 5 years which seems to be common in his industry as well.

Re: How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
DH is in banking/finance and I'm a SAHM. He's been with the same company for 5+ years. Changing jobs every 1-2 is common when someone is first starting out to build up their career. Once they are settled and have a family to support, I think stability is key... unless, of course, an amazing opportunity arises.

How often does the breadwinner in your family change jobs?
I think every 1-2 years is a lot. But it could depend on the field, like tech consulting. I heard 5 or so years is more "acceptable". I am,the primary and I have been with this company, since I started working, I have changed positions and groups (very large organization) where I have done vastly different work.
