Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
my dd does not use a binky...but IMHO, they should be weaned by 1 year, 18 months at the latest...It is a personal choice though...

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
Well...DD is 13 months and uses hers at night and naptimes...once in a blue moon in the afternoon lately (she is teething and miserable) I would have liked to have it gone at 12 mths but she is having some other sleep issues and now is just not the time. Id like to start weaning by 18 mths - definately done with it completely by age 2. Lets hope...

"incredibly disturbing"??
We're talking about a binky - I think there are so many other things in this world that are far more serious to consider "disturbing". A binky, in my opinion, does not fall into that category.
You took the words out of my mouth. Normal binky usage is hardly considered disturbing.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I would have to go with 1 year as well. Mostly because of teh interference with talking.
I thought we would have big issues, but one day we couldn't find any and went cold turkey and it was very easy! (we were only using for naps and bedtime though at that point)

Well I guess most of you would be highly offended if you saw my daughter. She's almost 2 and still uses it and I really have no plans of taking it away until she can understand why and understand trading it for something. I figure that will probably be sometime in the next 6-12 months. I just am not up for the battles that surround taking it away cold turkey. That's just me. If I felt it was hindering her in any way then I might feel otherwise but it's not. She clearly uses it less and less as time goes on so I feel like she'll work toward giving it up on her own with a little help from us at some point.
same here. Bryan uses it for naps and in the car- sometimes he asks for in when we are out and rather that have a battle in the grocery store I give it to him, Its not deterring his speech or anything he talks up a storm.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
i let my dd have it till she was 3, then during her first dentist appt i was advised to get rid of it, it was starting to ruin her teeth. so i would say up till 3 is fine.

I think we need to define "normal" binky usage. I can see for sleep and naps and to soothe a crying baby but when I see a binky go in a perfectly calm toddler I think the point of a binky has been missed.

Come on people, we are talking about binky usage in a toddler, not abuse, starvation, neglect, etc. Whether it's continual, or just for naps/bedtime, who cares, I mean, really? None of our kids will be going to high school using a binky - they all wean at some point, does it really matter at what point?
Again - you do what works for your family and for your child - there's no "one size fits all" equation when it comes to this stuff and as long as your raising a healthy, loved, well-balanced child, let's just respect other mothers and their decisions.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
Honestly, I don't know the answer to this. I think it depends on the child. Some babies aren't 'binky babies' and it's easier for some parents. My son never took one, but then started teething and then it became soothing for him when his teeth are bothering him. He's been teething nonstop so he's had one a lot lately.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
IMO, I think it depends on the child. If I got rid of DS's "sucky" he probably would not care. My nephew (14 months old) is the same way but on the other hand my niece (2 1/2 years old) is not even close to giving it up.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
For me, I don't like seeing toddlers walking around with one either. So when they start walking is my answer.
Yes it's whatever works for you but the post was to discuss what we felt was too old.
I think it's always best to wean younger because it's a quicker process.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I dont' like seeing an older toddler walking around with one either, especially when they are talking quite clearly.
DD has ONLY used her paci for sleep/nap time and we bring it in the car for when she needs to fall asleep in the car. If she grabs one during the day when we are upstairs, I make her put it back in her crib.
I have no plans on weaning her yet considering she uses it so infrequently and right now, she's got so many new things going on.
DS uses his a little more often, but he's still too young to know.....he likes to s*ck and after he's completely asleep, he spits it out. He also falls asleep without it sometimes....
I'm hardly worried....I'll wait to be reprimanded by my ped or my friend who is a speech pathologist

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I'll put my 2 cents in even though I am not a parent. My nephew will be 4 in October and STILL has his "ninnie" he is my SIL's last child and she does try to keep him a baby because I guess she feels sad. I have heard it will mess up their teeth but don't really say anything because i know that is annoying. I think he is too old by about 2 yrs! EVERYONE makes comments-especially FIL. SIL says, well he won't have it in college......My friend only gives hers to her babies when they go to sleep which I think is a good tactic

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
Its hard for me to make this call since my DD really never took to the pacificer. We use it at night to help her go to sleep but she doesn't look for it when its not offered. But if I were pressed, I would say around 8-12mths old.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'm just not a big pacifier fan. I personally think they should be gone by 6 months. But of course that's just my opinion. I feel like the older they get, the harder it is to get them off the pacifier. If they've had it long enough to rationalize that they are now too old for it, or they now need to pass it on to the other babies out there- then they have already passed the point where they should have it. I don't want to get flamed, this is just my thinking. I have plenty of friends whose kids use a binky and I never push my thoughts on it- but the post asked.
Well, then I'm "worse" than you
To each his own but I've never used them at all.
I was a bit mad at the hospital when they didn't inform me they were giving DS one for his circumcision... oh, well... I understood but two hours after he returned to me and was breastfeeding in the garbage it went.
DD was in the NICU and she had one too. Ok, understood but the first night she came home I did nothing but breastfeed both of them and keep putting her pacifier in her mouth... the ENTIRE night So in the garbage it went.
There was no way I was stayng up nights to keep putting in two pacifiers in two babies mouths.
I must be a real radical I never used a bassinet and never used a binky... just two less transitions we have to go through.
I do have one thumb sucker and one fist sucker but they can't lose those
I think after the first birthday and before the second is the time to give it up, depending upon the child.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
Yet again, everyone judging and no one seeing a problem with that. Why does anyone else care what someone else does with their child? If I allow my three year old to walk around with a binky, who cares? What does it matter to anyone else? It really annoys me that people claim they don't judge and then turn around and do just that. This isn't directed towards anyone in particular here, but just in general, why does anyone else care what someone else does with their child, so long as it's not abusive? It just perplexes me to no end.

I think that some people just think certain behaviors are odd, or that children are too old for certain things that are unnecessary. You are 100% right, that we shouldn't care as long as the behavior isn't abusive.
But i will be the first to admit...I've made comments to DH after I've encountered something I find odd, such as a 5 year old with a pacifier, or like when i went to the mall and saw two moms pushing kids that were at least 5 years old in strollers. And they were not handicapped...I could totally understand if that were the case.
Does it have an effect on my life personally? No. But I do have opinions, and we are all human. There are worse things than a 3 or 4 year old using a pacifier but I do question why it hasn't been removed. Just me i guess.
And my son just never took one, he hates them actually. If he loved a pacifier, it would be gone by no more than a year.

I think everyone has to decide that for their own child....but I think that parents pick their battles with their kids, and it is not my place to judge that. Some kids get more attached to things then others.
Amen, girlfriend!
I remember our first ped (in California) saying that binky use really moves away from providing comfort into just being a "habit" for the child at 6 months old.
I tried binkies w/both my kids. Paul liked it for the first 9 months, and then he would just throw it at me. Elena NEVER used a binky. That's totally her personality, too.

I agree but the question was asked and we are just responding as to our personal preference...like I said, it does not affect me at all how long your baby (not you specifically ) has a binky....my dd never uses one so I guess I am lucky in that regard, one less habit to break

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I don't see the harm in a toddler having one. My nieces both had theirs into their 3rd year. I never judge on those things.
Andrew is a thumb sucker at 30 months almost and I don't know how much longer he'll have that as a self soothing technique.
