Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I posted this b/c my gf's son just turned 4 and he still uses a binky for naps, bedtime and in the car. In *my* opinion, 4 is definitely "too old". It's odd to hear him speaking about 4 year old stuff with it hanging out of his mouth.
I weaned my 1st at 18 months (OMG, that first night was HORRIBLE!! ) and thank the good Lord, my 2nd never took one!!

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I have a mental age of 2 in my head to explain to Bella why we need to get rid of the binky. Bella only uses it at night and naps and I weaned her usage in the car about 6-8 months ago. It never leaves the house.
We did have it to fall back on during our vacay from hell in June, which honestly was worth it's weight in GOLD
That said, it's not fabulous seeing a talking toddler running around with a binky hanging out of it's mouth, which is why I am firm (at least) with the fact that Bella only uses it for sleep.
But the binky has served me well in it's tenure...sleeping through the night at 3 1/2 months. Longer naps, an ease to crying at the beginning...I will miss her when she goes...but like Beth said, it ain't like they'll be accepting their HS diploma with a chew toy in their mouth.

Come on people, we are talking about binky usage in a toddler, not abuse, starvation, neglect, etc. Whether it's continual, or just for naps/bedtime, who cares, I mean, really? None of our kids will be going to high school using a binky - they all wean at some point, does it really matter at what point?
Again - you do what works for your family and for your child - there's no "one size fits all" equation when it comes to this stuff and as long as your raising a healthy, loved, well-balanced child, let's just respect other mothers and their decisions.
Jordana is VERY attached to her pacifier. She has also had a very strong sucking reflex. In the hospital they told me to give her my finger and I swear- she would suck it off if I let her.
I spoke to my pediatrician about this adn she told me around 2 is a good time to start weaning. They can understand more and you can reason with them.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
My oldest got rid of the binky at 2 yrs, 3 months old (you remember Kathi? Same time you were doing your weaning) And he never once asked for it and never had a problem sleeping without it so I guess he technically didn't "need it" anymore. #2 never took one and #3 still has one at 14 months. I dont know when I'll wean him...Im not that concerned. My DD is 3 and I couldnt imagine her using a binky now so I guess 3 seems too old. I dont see too many kids walking around with them, I think any older binky users are doing in it in private. The few times I've been "older kids" (over 2?) with them, it never bothered me. A coworker of my SIL's daughter still had one at 6 and out in public...that surprised me but I know the girl has had a young but troubled life (she use to call every man she knew for more than an hour "Daddy" when she was younger) so I would assume it's her sense of security.
My nephew is almost 5 and still sucks his thumb, is there a difference?

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
Well, DD is 6 and she is concentrating HARD on not sucking her thumb anymore. She has this toy she LOVES and put it on a shelf and said she can't have it until she stops.
Meanwhile DS is obsessed with Soothies. He almost always has one in his mouth. If it falls out, he still sucks. He's a sucker. I HOPE to get rid of it at 1 year...PERSONALLY I think after 2 is a bit much since the kids are up walking and able to drink out of cups almost exclusively and start potty training. But that's just my opinion. I saw an older child once with one in it's mouth. It just kind of shocked me.

I remember! Seems soooo long ago now. So sad about that little girl. I am glad my boys aren't thumb suckers. That is an incredibly hard habit to break. My 17 (yes, 17) year old nephew still occasionally sucks his thumb in his sleep.

I do have one thumb sucker and one fist sucker but they can't lose those
This is why I think it's almost easier to use a pacifier-because you can break them of that habit but you can't easily break them of thumb sucking if they develop that in place of the pacifier.
I'm not due for a few more weeks, we'll see what happens.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
DD never really took to the pacifier, so I really don't have any experience.
My best friend, tried to wean her DS at 15/16 months. He was doing ok...but, at daycare, in his room, all the other kids had them...so he was going around and stealing them from the other cribs and using them So...she said that she has to wait until he moves up to the next room at 18 months, because they don't allow them in that room, except for naps.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
I'd say 12-18 months. We got rid of them at 7 but I felt like *I* was relying on them too much.

Re: How old is *too* old for a binky?
From a dental perspective at the age of 2 the pacifier should be taken away.
You dont realize it but the pacifier at this point is reconstructing the childs bite. 98% of children get either an overbite or open bite from the pacifier and then need a palate expander and then ortho at the appropiate age but the expanders go in as early as 6-7.
so for those that still have the pacifier over 2 years of age, please be aware of this and your dentist should have told you this when they went at their 2 year visit.
