How to find camp for child with special needs
My son has mood disorder and adhd. He always went to the summer program with his school district but now hes going into Junior high and they are deciding between mainstream with an aide or 15:1 class. If he has mainstream, its great but there goes the summer program. He only gets it if hes in the 15:1 or 8:1 class. They have not decided yet but I need to prepare. He cant go to a camp with regualtr kids, he has been kicked out before and he cant have an aide in those camps. Where can I send him if he gets mainstreamed? The only one i found was camp anchor which has a 2 year wait list

Has your son ever tried Tae Kwon Do? Master Frank at Champion's TKD in Wantagh is amazing. He has so much patience he works with all kids including those with issues. He sets up a trial for every child who may want to join the program to see if they are a good fit for his class. And best of all they have a summer camp as well.
Also check out JCC in Plainview - they have Camp Adler. You can look at last summer's brochure.

Gersch at West Hills has a Day Camp, JCC has a camp as well. If your looking for a sleep away camp there is Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck out east. Also, check into other locals camps because they may allow aides or have them for you at an extra charge.

Re: How to find camp for child with special needs
I am going through something similar with my kids, but they are 4. If they don't qualify for summer, I will need to send them somewhere but they need a lot of help and direction. If we get denied, I am planning on asking the district recommendations on places I can send them.

My husband used to work for Camp Alvernia and I am certain they had aides for some students. The director there is great if you want to give him a call and see how they could work with you.
