How/when did you know you needed soy formula?

DS is BF. Through the first few weeks of his life he was supplemented with formula here and there. It was regular formula.

I have sample cans of soy formula and thought about giving them to a family member because she needs the soy formula. But how do I know if DS doesn't need it? When/how can I tell? Does the need for soy develop later? Should I hold onto them? Chat Icon

I would think you would know by now if he had a problem with the regullar formula. If he doesnt spit up or get gassy you probably wont need to switch.

So it would've developed with small amounts in the first few weeks? He had only 2-4 ounces per day for the first few weeks.

Do you eat dairy? If you do, and your DS has no problem with your breastmilk, there there is a good chance that he does not have any milk protein allergy.

We have been going through milk protein allergy issues for the past few weeks. Because I still feel awful about not breastfeeding, I have asked the doctors repeatedly how this would play out if I were BFing.

I BF'd for 5 months exclusively and DD had a little eczema. When we started supplementing with regular formula, her eczema got a lot worse. The doctor concluded that it was due to the milk in the formula and the little amounts I was consuming that was coming out in my breastmilk. When we switched to soy formula and I cut out dairy her skin got much better. HTH
