How young can a child be diagnosed?
What is the youngest that a child can be diagnosed with autism? Is 8 or 9 months too young? Thanks!

Re: How young can a child be diagnosed?
My DS showed signs of regression at 14=15 months old. He qualified for speech and I had him reevaluated at 18 months which is when he got his PDD-NOS diagnosis. The earlier they start ABA the better. In my opinion if a DC is showing autistic signs that early, I would make a call to EI and have them evaluated. While the onset of autism is typically after age one, I have spoken to some moms who saw signs earlier. As in the case of my DS, it can be difficult to diagnose children with ASD that young as some behaviors can be due to age and they could grow out of a lot of red flags. That said, while DS HAS lost of his behaviors, there are many that are still there so I stand by his PDD-NOS diagnosis.

My son was diagnosed at 18 months, but I knew around 13-15 months something was not right.

definitely not too young. If there are on the spectrum they might be showing other signs now that will show on evaluations...The younger they start ABA the better the outcome. I would def call the County. If they aren't eligible that's great, but at least you know.

Re: How young can a child be diagnosed?
Although signs can be seen at 8 months, there won't be enough to diagnose a baby that young on the spectrum. However, if he is showing signs, he may qualify for pt or OT because he's low tone, not crawling, or having feeding issues so he could get speech. Then he'll be on the radar to get evaluated in a few more months for language and play issues.
