Severe joint pain in toddler/young child?

My co-worker's son is in the hospital He's 3, almost 4, and he's had severe pain in his hip area for about a week. The doctors think it might be Lyme disease but they don't know. They are still running tests. They did find fluid on his hips.

My co-worker is getting so frustrated with the doctors because they aren't telling her anything, and they are keeping him so heavily medicated because he's in a lot of pain.

Has anyone heard of this? Co-worker doesn't seem to think it is Lyme, but of course she's not a doctor...

I've never heard of this, but I hope they find out what is wrong soon!!

My nephew had Lymes disease at age 4. He would cry from severe pain in his toes, feet, ankles and hands. So it could be.... His Drs didnt diagnose it right away. He did have a bulls eye rash from a tick bite so that was a sure sign. He actually has residual neuro damage from it going untreated....

Last year when Michael started preschool and was sick non-stop, he did complain of pain in his hip and was limping for about a week. My doctor saw him and told me that certain viruses settle in the joints causing pain and discomfort. There are a lot of articles about this on the web.

I had a friend who has a DS (about 2.5) complaining about hip pain. Dr. sort of down played it, said it was no big deal. My friend went home and looked online, she believes it was a virus that settled into his hip. He was fine after about 3 days.

I had this as a 9 year old, and a friend's daughter had it when she was about 2 1/2. It was a virus that settled in the hip joint. I went thru many many tests to determine this was all it was.
