HPV vaccine
I took my stepson to the dr. for a physical and they wanted to give him the HPV & flu vaccines. As per my husband's wishes, I declined both. The dr. was adamant that we research the vaccines before declining and said that he gave them to his son. I don't want any extra chemicals in my SS's body but want some reassurances.
Did you or do you know someone who chose to get the vaccines? Were there any reactions?
Are there any reputable resources aside from the CDC and AAP? He suggested I read those, but I'd like to find other resources that aren't necessarily tied to these vaccines monetarily.
Thanks

Re: HPV vaccine
I would search Medical journals for articles written by scientists. I think you will get the most accurate info there.
I found this (but I did a quick look) http://www.ccjm.org/content/80/1/49.full#T1
While searching, you may come up with some Jenny McCarthy-esque stuff, so I'd watch out for that.
IMO, the benefits outweigh the risks, but I'm strongly pro-vax.

HPV vaccine
I'm a dental professional and I strongly believe all children should be given the HPV vaccine. HPV is directly tied to oral cancer which is more deadly than cervical cancer and prostate cancer. The majority of people being diagnosed with oral cancer today are 24-36 years old, no smokers due to exposure to HPV which is sexually transmitted. It's affects the genitals, but also the oral cavity. I'm on the fence about the flu shots and other vaccines but I have seen so many young people recently diagnosed with the HPV/oral cancer link. No cancer is good or easy but oral cancer is especially vicious

HPV vaccine
I would never give the hpv for several reasons. One of the most important is how many children have died or had extremely negative life changing health issues. Most recently in Columbia. Another break out in England. For what it is supposed to prevent it's not worth the risk in my opinion.

I agree.....I know it is to prevent ovarian cancer, but that type of cancer is from an STD, so we need to teach the kids safe sex.

But what about oral sex? I doubt anyone is engaging in oral sex and using protection. In my experience, all teens are afraid of is getting pregnant. STD's are barely on their radar.

Isn't it cervical cancer that HPV causes? Not ovarian

That is correct, it's cervical cancer, not ovarian.

HPV vaccine
For anyone who said they wont give the vaccine, I'm interested if you can expand on the reasons why. I received it in my 20s and although my DD is young, will most likely have her get it. But I'm curious to hear reasons against it...

HPV vaccine
at what age do they give the HPV vaccine?
My kids get the flu vaccine and so do I - to me the risk of getting flu is more likely and could have serious consequences. They are both in daycare and get exposed to everything.

I'm not sure what age pediatricians are starting to give it now. But I do know you have to get it before you become sexually active. And I think there are several shots that are spread out for it. (if I'm not mistaken)

I'm very curious about this also. I haven't researched it at all but it sounds like a good idea to me. I've read that something like 80% of the population has HPV, so I'd say the odds of getting it are pretty high. Not sure what the odds are on the strains that cause cancer though.
What does the vaccine do to kids that people are so against it?

Re: HPV vaccine
I did not get it. But before people on this thread go crazy....I am NOT AGAINST it. I think there are pro's and con's to everything and you need to assess what makes sense for YOU. What is good for one person is not good for the other. If my circumstances were different I may have gotten it.
Anyway, this is going back some years now but the reasons I chose not to get it were as follows:
1) I was in a committed relationship. 2) Tested negative for HPV during annual pap smear 2) Was weary to introduce something "brand new" that long term effects were still unknown into my body. 3) Research and lack of clear, nonconflicting, information out there- there was a TON of conflicting information when I was doing my research...Was genetics really the leading cause of cervical cancer??? How many strands did this protect against vs how common were these stands were found in humans??? Others that I do not remember.... I simply could not find answers from reliable sources...I felt like I could not make an informed decision based on the knowledge I had. 4) I know this one is a little silly but I kind of felt there could've been a lot of monetary interest in the vaccine at the time. Lot's of Gardisil commercials during primetime TV. Anyway, this wasn't a real driver for my decision, just something I noticed and found interesting. Who knows, maybe they genuinely did care about our health or maybe it was scare tactic / advertisement for a vaccine? I have no idea -it was just an observation.
Ultimately, I felt like the necessary data to make an informed decision was missing at the time. Therefore, based on my PERSONAL medical history, family history and PERSONAL situation I opted against it.
Like I said, I am not antivaccine. I do not know how I will feel when my children are of age. But that will be years from now. and hopefully the information is better then.

HPV vaccine
I got the HPV vaccine a few years back. I remember the injection site being sore, but no other side effects or symptoms.
As for the flu shot- my fire department offers it to the membership free of charge every year. I got it last year and was sick for 2+ weeks. I don't think I will be getting it this year.

I wish it was around back when I was younger. I would have avoided a lot of medical procedures.

It is not supposed to be given to people under the age of 19. However not they say it's safe and it seems they're pushing younger and younger.

Supposedly it goes after only 4 strand of the 40 DETECTED cancers. There is no real solid proof that it curses against cancer.
Hpv is a virus that COULD cause cancer. Just because you have it doesn't mean you will get cancer. Also you can be tested for hpv test negative but really have the virus laying dormant in your body. You can test positive for it but then years later test negative. They estimate about 70p of women over age 27 have it. Even if it's laying dormant in your body. If you tested positive through diet and exercise you can get it to lay dormant. Smoking cigarettes is one if the worst things you can do.
If you've ever have genital herpes or have had genital warts you have hpv. If you keep yourself in good health you can get it to go dormant.
Google deaths or injury from this vaccine. It can cause paralysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome symptoms. I will take my chances.
