HSG Question and vent- UPDATE #2 and a Question

Update #2- So I am officially breaking up with my RE after my next cycle Chat Icon! I've called LI IVF and made an appt with Dr. Kreiner for this Monday. It is a nice change to be able to have a consult so soon.

Is there anything I should do or bring with me for this appt? I'm trying to get my medical records sent over from my current practice, but it's like pulling teeth!

For those of you who are already at LI IVF- After your inital appt, what was next? Did you immediately go for testing?

Since we have already paid for this upcoming cycle, we are going ahead with it at my current practice, and would like to start whatever tests they require after (if this cycle ends in a BFN).

Thanks for all the advice ladies- it's much appreciated Chat Icon Chat Icon

Update# 1- I spoke with the nurse, and she said in my file the doctor said it wasn't needed and they can not write me a script because I'm a "low global rate" (not sure what that means). She said to have my gyno write up one and have the radiology department send them the paperwork after. So now just to wait for the script and AF.

HSG Question and vent

If I were you I'd call your RE to see what they say. I had it done after my third iui, which I think is pretty typical (both practices I went to said to do it after the third one).

Ok this makes me feel so much better now. I just didn't want to think I was being taken advantage of because i really like my RE. I'll bring it up at my next appt because from what I'm reading up on the procedure, it's best to have it done between cd5-10.

IMO you should have the HSG before starting any treatments.

I had one before my cloud iuis and so did everyone I know.

I wouldn't worry too much, but DEF get it done sooner rather than later. The radiologists are very strict wirh the cd timing. I do think each practice has their own protocol, but li Ivf and north shore was after the third. They take into account risk factors as well.
With all that being said, I found my old practice (north shore) to take advantage of the "I'm desperate for a baby and will do anything for one" mentality I had in the beginning.
If you have that nagging feeling, seek out a second opinion. Would a consult be covered by insurance?

It is so strange, I go to the same practice and they would practically not touch me until I did the HSG.

Who is your dr? Dr. Stelling is my main dr, and when I first went there last year for my initial consultation, he chalked up my fertility issues to not ovulating- never brought up the hsg. I'm definitely going to speak to the dr about this

Re: HSG Question and vent

I went there and it was part of my initial diagnostic testing. I have heard ab drs there not ordering it, even after multiple IUI failures. In my opinion, it should always be first to see whether the tubes are blocked bc if they are, iui's will never work and you are wasting time and money. So either way, it was a waste of time for you. I would bring it up at your next appt and request it. I doubt they will give you a hard time- they usually agree with the patient. Heck, I basically planned my entire treatment there and they agreed and wrote the scripts lol Not a big fan of the place but many girls here like them. Good luck!

I wonder why each practice differs on diagnostics? I don't wish IF on my worst enemy :(

Re: HSG Question and vent

The first things I did when I started at that RSofNY was blood work, sono and setting up the HSG. They wanted to make sure everything was in working order before starting any treatments so I went end of July. I am finally just starting tx since nothing else is working. You do need to get the HSG done before you ovulate (within 7-9 days post day 1 of AF) because the Drs. want you to have a full cycle after the test. I also heard that it opens the tubes up and people tend to get pregnant right after the test but not me Chat Icon But the good news is my HSG was normal!

I was nervous about pain but it wasn't bad at all. I was more uncomfortable during the test than in pain. I did have some bad cramping after it so make sure to not plan anything for the rest of the day.

Good luck!!

HSG Question and vent

this was the first exam my RE had me do. he wanted to make sure I wasn't the one with the problems before we had my Dh tested. Once that was out of the way, and my DH was tested, then we moved on to treatments.
I would have one done sooner rather than later, and see if your insurance will cover it if its billed as something other than infertility, there are other reasons to have it done if the patient suffers from other problems, even endometriosis.
I don't remember exactly when in the cycle they told me to get it done, but it had to be during very specific days and they make you take a pregnancy test before they give you the exam to be sure.

that was the first test I had done along with DH getting a SA. My gyn actually gave me a script for both before I saw an RE. Maybe that could be a way to get it covered by your insurance.

RSNY dropped the ball and that should have been one of the first things they should have ordered for you.

Well, it looks like my gynecologist was right since so many of you had this done before any medicated cycle. I just called the office, and am waiting for the nurse to call me back. I asked to speak to a dr there, but the best I could get was the nurse. So I'll see what she says- hopefully she can speak with my doctor and have me go in for one.

I had my HSG between my 2nd and 3rd IUIs. In my practice, they don't make you have the HSG done if they don't think anything is wrong. (We were dealing with MFI and all my tests came back normal).

That being said, I got pg on my 3rd IUI, which was done a few days after my HSG. I think it was a coincidence, though, b/c it was also my first month on injectables and the first time I had multiple follies.

HSG Question and vent- update

What kind of nonsense is that??? I call BS!!! If you can find a new RE cause thats ridiculous!!! Did your DH have a SA? How can they say there is no issue if you havent had a HSG???

Run from that RE and I was a patient of RSNY who actually liked the practice!!!

I think this will be our last cycle at RSofNY- DH has a low count and morphology issues, and Dr. Stelling knew this at our first consultation, but insisted that it was me due to my pcos and history of not ovulating. I love the practice and staff, but this is ridiculous.

When we had all of our initial testing at LI IVF (except HSG), I was told by Dr. Droesch that she recommended we go straight for IVF w/ICSI and not waste any time- yet Dr. Stelling disagreed and said an IUI will be our best bet.

I think I may go back to LI IVF and request another doctor (Dr, Droesch doesn't have the greatest bedside manner). Plus the Melville office is only a few blocks away from work, so the early monitoring appointments would work out.

Any recommendations of who I should see?

Re: HSG Question and vent- update

I can't believe that. What could they have been thinking??? I had HSG before going to RSNY but when I had my initial consult with Stelling he asked me if I had one yet and if I hadn't, he was sending me for it. He also had me get a repeat one 3 months ago and both my tubes were blocked again.

They really did drop the ball with that.

HSG Question and vent- update

I like Dr. Brenner at LI IVF, he is my doctor.

I've also met and liked Dr. Kenigsburg and Dr. Kreiner. I actually just met Dr. Kreiner today but really liked him a lot.

Best of luck!

Re: HSG Question and vent- update

I'm far from a doctor to really have a say in what I think is the right protocol for testing- but honestly I'm shocked that this was not in your initial testing.

Had my doctor not have done a HSG on me, I would've never found out about the scar tissue around my fallopian tube and endo. Crazy thing is, my tubes aren't blocked so when they did the HSG exam, the dye went into my tubes and came out the way it was supposed to. It wasn't until further review of the HSG slides that they saw how coiled up one of my tubes were from scar tissue (that was then removed with a laproscopy surgery). All of this info would not have been known without the HSG exam! I would be cautious if I were you.

HSG Question and vent- UPDATE #2 and a Question

Get all the records you can. Tell the old RE to make a copy and you will come pick them up. I found when I switched they only sent 1/2 and I chad to call 6 million times before they actually sent them.

Also get any testing etc from your OBGYN....last pap etc.

GL. My stress level dropped dramatically after I left my first RE.
