Re: Prayers needed for Hunter: SAD UPDATE 10/6
my coworkers son just had this done when he was 3 months old.
He's completely fine! He was groggy the 1st day afte surgery and then the 2nd day she sent out pictures of him smiling.
It was performed at StonyBrook Hospital.
I know it's a lot to take on, but take it one day at a time!!!! He'll be okay!!!!

Re: Prayers needed for Hunter: SAD UPDATE 10/6
I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have family members in europe who needed this surgery done for their 4 month old daughter. She's 5 now and such a beautiful energetic little girl. I wish I knew of some people here that I can put you in contact with to talk further about it. You are doing everything I would be doing knowing it's something that's needed, getting a second opinion...you need to stay strong for you little man. I have sent a prayer out for him, he will be alright

Re: Prayers needed for Hunter: SAD UPDATE 10/6
My niece (my sister's DD) had this issue.
I am well aware of the surgery you are talking about.
FM me for all the details.
At 1 month old, her head was getting shaped into a football shape. My sister noticed it. The PED would have missed it but agreed with my sister. They went to see a specialist.
She had 2 choices. Do the surgery or not do the surgery.
Not doing the surgery would still mean: - Head deformity (cosmetic) - Compression on brain - MRI every year to make sure there was no issue with brain due to compression (not even space for brain to grow)
She was scheduled for surgery right before she turned 6 months. They scheduled it so she was still on milk (easier in hospital). She was scheduled from the time she was 1.5 month old. They just wanted her to grow a bit more as a baby. But by 6 months so it would easier. Not walking yet, still on a bottle, etc..
They opened her up from 1 ear to another in the back. They madethe scar "wavy" so it would be hidden later on in her hair.
Her skull was reconstructed completely. 2 different fontanels had closed up. On top and in the back.
They did put spacers. They were supposed to last until the normal growth development of her skull. I think the spacers were supposed to "disolve" in time. Not sure how they really worked but it was placed so the bones don't fuse again until the time they are supposed to.
She recovered. My sister recovered. I don't think she was fully ready for it (the head bandage, stitches, drain, etc..). My niece was scheduled for an MRI every year until she was 3.
My niece is now 6 and has no recollection at all. For a while as a baby, she would have dark circle right away under her eyes when she got tired. But by 2-3 yo, it was gone.
At her 1 yo MRI (6 months after the surgery), my sister was "shocked" because they never saw the xray/MRI of the "inside" of the after procedure. She said you could see all the broken pieces of skull like a jigsaw puzzles but eventually they all fused back. So her xrays are very different now.
The spacers on my niece actually did not hold up as long as originally anticipated. They checked because my niece was complaining of headaches. The bones fused AGAIN. But it's OK. She is well monitored on it.
My sister saw the best Dr in Europe. That's where she leaves.
I suggest you go to the best Dr. too. One that does that on a regular basis or his main line of work.
It is not the most common surgery but it's not as rare as it might look.
