The family had to cancel their family vaca to Atlantis (Bahamas) -- Jet Blue canceled all flights and thank GOD they took full insurance. So, it won't cost them a thing and they'll just have to reschedule for another time... might not be until June of next year b/c of everyone's schedules. My little nephew is crushed  But it's OK -- if it wasn't going to interfere with school starting (for my nephew and my sis who teaches) they would go later but it just can't be. So, reschedule. What a shame -- they were all so excited.

Thanks for the update. I hope our plane does not get cancelled or delayed on Sunday. I am sure they will know closer to the weekend what flight pattern they will need to use though if they will be flying out.

I'm having a panic attack, though -- my house is still up in the air while the masons finish preparing the new foundation. We survived the earthquake today -- really can't imagine how those masons felt underneath the house on these Jenga blocks when the earth shook  -- but I think all I can do right now is pray Irene moves out to sea....I have no way to prepare, considering my house is 4' up in the air...
When they started the construction I prayed for no Hurricanes. 
Someone in insurance please make me feel better -- if a hurricane hits my house while it's under construction, I'm assuming I'm still covered (minus the hurricane deductible).

I don't know much about storm surge or how it really hits this area, so I won't even try to guess.
As for category here, chances are it will be a strong tropical storm (winds 39-74mph) or minimal hurricane (75+). As for right now, it looks to be sustained winds of 40-50 throughout the area. But time will tell.

Biggest impact Sunday, but not ruling out seeing some outer bands hitting on Saturday night. Hurricane come like a pinwheel. Outer bands can reach further out from the storm than the full storm. You will notice them more as she strengthens tomorrow. Just look at her tomorrow as she spins. You will see a compact center around the eye, but notice 'arms' spinning outward from it. Those are the bands.

I guess I'll be cleaning out the garage tomorrow so I can park one car in there. We have HUGE (at least 3 stories tall) trees all around us... no escaping them and I'm afraid one or more might fall
So it will be here through the night Sunday into Monday?

This sounds stupid, but what exactly does preparing for a hurricane entail? I know I'll be gassing up the car and buying a case of water, an extra container of formula, diapers, etc ... but what else? Get some cash from the ATM (I remember that being an issue during the blackout - ATMs weren't working)?
I live in a complex, so we're not responsible for any outdoor maintenance. (obviously we'll bring DS's outdoor toys inside)
I've checked batteries in flashlights, have plenty of lighters and candles on hand, we'll keep the cell phones fully charged (and we have car chargers if necessary), and I have enough food in the house for all of us for at least 3 days.

That's pretty much it. Basically, be prepared for days without electricity. What would you need? And make sure anything outside is brought inside or tied down.
