Thanks for the update!

For anyone that lives on the water, or is prone to flooding - Monday is the New Moon so we'll be getting a new moon tide during all of this mess = more water everywhere!

Thank you for the info! I'm supposed to go to Cancun on Saturday- and I was so worried about the weather there- I didn't really focus on the weather here.

I hope I can get out and that we have nice weather in Cancun. I've been checking the weather report regularly for Cancun and it looks like it will be ok. I hope so. Chat Icon

This sounds stupid, but what exactly does preparing for a hurricane entail? I know I'll be gassing up the car and buying a case of water, an extra container of formula, diapers, etc ... but what else? Get some cash from the ATM (I remember that being an issue during the blackout - ATMs weren't working)?

I live in a complex, so we're not responsible for any outdoor maintenance. (obviously we'll bring DS's outdoor toys inside)

I've checked batteries in flashlights, have plenty of lighters and candles on hand, we'll keep the cell phones fully charged (and we have car chargers if necessary), and I have enough food in the house for all of us for at least 3 days.

That's pretty much it. Basically, be prepared for days without electricity. What would you need? And make sure anything outside is brought inside or tied down.

I'll add to this. If you have an umbrella for any patio furniture, take it down. Nothing like walking outside during high winds to find out what the crash was & realizing your GLASS table was shattered. I already told DH to secure the furniture.

As always Kelly, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

The white numbers are barometric pressure. The lower the numbers, the stronger the storm. Typically above 1005 is good weather and under 990 is a strong storm. The black lines just connect the same pressure.

WHen the black lines get close together like that, it means windy. The more black lines packed together, the windier it is.

Main concern now is where the center of the storm is. (That is the smallest circle you see on this map on the southern tip of NJ.) But as you can see, rain (colors on map) and wind extend a long way from the center.

The 'right front quadrant' of a hurricane is the most dangerous.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN KELLY?

Think of a storm like a clock. Center of the storm is the center of the clock. Where you would typically find 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 is the most dangerous part of the storm as a whole. (Other than the immediate center, but I am talking about a large area in this instance.) Also, the right front quadrant is known for the area of biggest storm surge. (Meaning the water gets pushed from the ocean onto land.) If you live on the water and will be east of the center, you could be in big trouble.

Did I explain it or confuse you more?

Re: Hurricane Irene-what you need to know (mini-update wed am))

I know the possibility of a hurricane changing paths is ALWAYS possible, but what is the probability of it becoming a category 2 or 3 at this point?

ETA: Isn't all dependent on that front that's coming down from Alaska (or something like that, my dad mentioned it to me last night)?

It is possible she can be a 2 up here. But there are things that will stop it. If she makes landfall a few times before coming here, it will help her weaken. And our water is cooler up here, so she could weaken. The stronger she gets down south (as I assume she is about to become a 4 soon) and if she doesn't make landfall south of us, then we could be in even bigger trouble.

SOme fronts can help steer a hurricane. Depends on how strong they are and how strong the hurricane is. So many variables onto what can help steer a hurricane.

I know how unpredictable these things can be, I've lived in S. Florida most of my life. Thanks for the input, I knew you could give me more info than the weather channel right now Chat Icon

Do you think it will hit early or later on Sunday? Like morning or night?

Sunday morning has a chance to be better, but this storm will take a LONG TIME to go through.

Ok, thanks. I guess I will just have to keep checking Southwest and see what they say as there is nothing up on their site yet.
