hyphenated first name....Dumb?

as in Mary Kate? When I did daycare, there was one girl whose name was Mary Kate, not Mary.

So...Ella Jayne instead of just Ella??? Do you pick a "middle" name too???

My SIl is Mary Kate and she doesn't have a middle name.

People call her Mary, Mary Kate and MK (well, we do )

She is 14 almost 15.

I was born in Spain and have a Spanish name
My first name is Maria del Carmen

in Spanish we shorten that to
Mary Carmen

Honestly, Its been a Pain all my life and I was always so frustrated as a child.....people are stupid and don't get it....they call me Mary, Carmen, Marie, Maria.....but rarely Mary Carmen


My family and friends call me by my name but in the social and professional scene I go by Maria because it seems like people can only handle 1 name......

It's actually been a family tradition to name the first born daughter Maria del Carmen for about 6 generations.....my mother is a bit annoyed that I won't be continuing it but I was horribly difficult for me as a child and I don't want that for my daughter if I have one......

I have a friend whose name is Mary Beth. Not first name Mary, middle name Beth, but Mary Beth no hyphen as a first name. She gave herself a middle initial so people would stop calling her Mary. So, IMHO, if you want Ella Jayne (beautiful!!), then add a middle name, so everyone knows her first name is Ella Jayne, not Ella.

My cousin's daughter is Kelly-Anne
She also has a middle name.
I don't think it is odd.

When DH and I first got married and started talking about when we would TTC and all that came with it, I had my heart set on a daughter named
Emma-Kate Olivia. Maybe it's the Italian in me with all the names (my full name is REALLY long). I've changed my mind since, but still, I thought it was pretty. I don't think hyphenated first names are dumb at all.

my first name is Keri Ann. no Hyphen, no middle name.

I mostly just go by Keri, but some of my family and some work people call me Keri Ann.

However, I will say I have grown to like my name, but the hyphen is a pain. Most computer systems can't put the hyphen in. Even the DMV can't put it on my license. BUT... I do like having a name thats different, I usually drop the hyphen though and just use LuAnn

It's very common in France to have hyphenated first names. Because if you use 2 first names they MUST be hyphonated.

I have seen many first names with 2 first names together in the US but not hyphenated though.

I have a couple of friends with hyphenated or two first names (Anne-Marie and Beth Ann) And neither of them have a middle name.

My DD is actually MaryKate
with no hyphen or space. I wanted it that way because I didn't want people shortening it and calling her Mary. She has no middle name.

Some people aren't a fan saying that I made up he name being that the "K" is capital in the name but I really don't care. She's mine and that's all that matters.

IMO, I would not hypenate her name. What middle name are you thinking of?

I don't think it's dumb at all. However you want to do it. If you want to use it as a first and middle name but call her by both that is fine also. U live down south right? Calling by first and middle name is very southern (at least in the deep south where I live).

I don't think there is anything wrong with it! We tend to call our DD by her first and middle name, even though we didn't plan on it, it just stuck.

I don't think it's dumb either! My little sister is Kelly Erin and has another middle name. She was breach and my mom prayed and said if she turned around she'd name her after Mary, but already had her name picked out, so she did Marie for her middle name!

I won't pick a middle name if the first is already something like Mary Kate...

It makes it more of a mouthful when she's married and needs to decide about hyphenating her maiden with husband's last name...

Imagine:

Mary Kate Anne Smith-William

It gets abit wordy...

I have a hyphenated first name. I don't like it. It's also not a common one like Mary-Beth or Ann-Marie. If it was maybe i wouldnt mind it as much, but I have also had problems with every standardized form I've ever filled out. That has been a ROYAL PITA!!!
