Had my first big scare with my youngest DS yesterday.
To make a long story a lil' shorter... I was holding him by his hand leading him out of the bedroom and he plopped his butt down on the floor because he did not want to leave the room. I was still holding onto his and was helping him up when I felt a "pop" but he didn't cry so I didn't think anything of it. Then a minute later when we are out of the room and in the hallway he starts crying. At first I thought he was just upset because I closed the door to the bedroom. So I tried to get hm to stop crying and he wouldn't quiet down. I started to think that perhaps it had something to do with the "pop" I felt in his arm but I didn't see anything abnormal. So after trying to give him various things to play with, eat and do to get him to stop crying I laid down in the middle of the kitchen floor and put him on my chest and rocked him and rubbed his back. He finally stopped, but I had a bad feeling that there really was something wrong with his arm so I tried to move it ever so slightly and he started to cry again. Ok so now it's confirmed and I start to freak out. I go sit on the sofa with him on my lap while I rock him and try not to move his arm all the while dialing up my pediatrician's emergency line and then DH to come home right away and then my mom to come over so she can watch my oldest DS. I'm normally ok at staying semi calm in urgent situations but when I saw my DS not using his left arm and just having it hang limp my heart broke into pieces and they all sank to my feet. Not to mention my hands were shaking like no tomorrow and I was getting ready to cry. So, as soon as DH gets home we run out to Schneider's and it turns out that he had "Nursemaid's Elbow" (I had never heard of this before). It's when the bone pops out and right back in but the ligament that runs along side the elbow does not fall back into it's correct postion. The Dr.s tell me it is a very common issue in children under the age of 5 and that it will only take 2 seconds to fix and he will be better right away. So the Dr. took his arm just to feel it out and position it and of course he starts crying again because obviously any movement hurt him. She then twisted it a tiny bit as she was getting ready to do the procedure and all of a sudden she says "ooh there it goes I just felt it pop". And wouldn't you know it it just happened to go back into position before they even did the actual "procedure". Immediately he did a 360 and calmed down within a minute, started using his arm again and was back to his happy go lucky self. I was so relieved I thought I was going to pass out right then and there. And that was it!!! He's completely fine now as if nothing ever happened. We just have to be careful because the Dr. told us that if it happened once there is a likely chance that it will happen again.

It's very easy to pop out ... that is why you should never swing or lift a child from their hands or pull a child (who hasn't done that, LOL). They say to always lift from the armpits
