I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
DD was in her stroller about 2 feet away from me. My mom and I were looking at something on the receipt, and when I looked up, there was some lady standing over her--her face was about 12" from DD's face!!!! I also saw her pulling her hand back, which makes me believe that she touched her face.
My heart literally jumped into my throat!! Before I could get a word out, she looked at me and said "She's so cute!", to which I replied, "Thank you, but I don't know where you get off touching other peoples' children without asking". She gave me a look and walked away.
My mom was completely because I'm never like that, but seriously??!!!!! Where do people get off??!!!!!

I agree. It happens. Don't shelter her. Say thank you gracefully, and then pull out the wipes. It is going to happen alot. It is annoying, but what can you do?

I agree as well.
You don't know for sure that she touched her, and she was just complimenting you on your beautiful DD.
Like Dina said, you just wipe her down a bit

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to thank someone for taking it upon themselves to put a hand on my child without asking me. I don't care about "gracious" when it comes to strangers who feel it's ok to do this.
Wow...guess I'm the ONLY one who feels that way, though...

I totally understand that...and I've complimented MANY a new mom on their gorgeous baby. But I never felt entitled to touch!

Honestly, I would freak out too. It is NOT OK to touch someone else's baby without permission! But I think I would just say thank you and walk away.

She didn't mean any harm, I'm sure

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
Also don't agree with it. Im also a new mom- but I see it two ways -
1. Germs are everywhere, she's going to pick them up regardless
2. I'm sure the lady had very good intentions and was just trying to be nice, I would (and have) just bitten my tongue and said thank you.
That being said, it would have annoyed me, but I'd of been nice about it.

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
I totally agree with how you feel... yes there are germs everywhere, but I WANT TO CHOSE which germs she can be exposed to and where I take her and who touches her, I don't want some random stranger touching my child EVER, it's not about germs, its about who gives any stranger a right to randomly touch a child on the face....I'm sorry but I'm just not comfortable with that....I would have reacted the same way if not worse...

Aww, Beth I'm sorry.
I personally wouldn't have cared. I would just say "thank you" and move on.

I absolutely hate it when strangers touch my kids. But, I wouldn't have said what you said. I would've just said thanks and walked away.

I am with you! As a parent of a baby who spent two nights in the hospital at 2 wks old thanks to "someone" touching my child, I think its really wrong. But I probably wouldn't have the guts to do what you did.

I think you were harsh. So many mean people in the world, and she was just trying to be nice.

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
No clue how old this "lady" was....but I seriously believe every elderly lady from here to Timbucktoo has stroked DS's foot at one point in time.
It is a part of life. I look at it the other way. I am grateful people think my child is cute enough to even comment in the first place.
Like Dina and Kate commented, be quick with the wipe and no harm done.
If, it were some sketchy looking person on the other hand, take that child and run
Don't stress the small stuff. People like to oogle.

strangers have touched DS , his head his feet. I always thought it would pizzzz me off, BUT the way his personality is, he just loves the attention, so I allow it, and wipe him down afterward

I would have been annoyed. She may have not meant any harm but she shouldn't have gotten so close, especially since the Flu is going around on the island!

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
I would have been more upset from the standpoint of her hands not being clean - especially if she was pushing a cart around. I am not OCD, but there is a reason why they make those cover thingys.

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
I'm not always the happiest shopper, and sometimes that happens several times in a single day out, so I could see myself being fed up and saying something. Also, I am very cautious during RSV season. If I were in an okay mood, I might just say "thank you" and move on. I wouldn't think it's terrible to handle it either way.

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
Things like that get me miffed too. I am sure I said some things to people that just rolled right out of my mouth when I was startled and mad. Who knows what I said to people when they got close or touched DS. I have blocked it out now.
But last month I did have to keep elbowing a woman, who was sick, to stay away from my DS. She was a random supermarket worker who had a runny nose and sniffles. She kept coming at DS and I kept elbowing her back because my hands were full. But maybe it sounded harsh to others that I 'elbowed' a woman to stay away from DS. We all do what we feel is right in the situation.

I agree ... with both comments.
