Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
I can see why it upsets you. I totally cringed when people used to touch my DC when they were babies, but honestly in a world where people are so cold and uncaring if someone takes a second out of their day to admire my baby I'm always polite and say thank you.
I would never touch someone else's baby either, but ask me that when I'm older and miss my babies being babies...maybe I'll forget the rules.
Just think about it - your baby is exposed to everything YOU touch and every person you come in contact with. It's impossible to shelter them from everything.

I absolutely hate it when strangers touch my kids. But, I wouldn't have said what you said. I would've just said thanks and walked away.

I would have been more upset from the standpoint of her hands not being clean - especially if she was pushing a cart around. I am not OCD, but there is a reason why they make those cover thingys.
ITA! and I am OCD! lol
I can totally understand you saying what you did to her, it was a quick reaction to someone who was touching your baby, and I probably would of said the same!

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
Let me just clarify something: I am in no way a germphobe. I'm a teacher--it's not possible. My problem with what this woman was doing had nothing to do with germs. It had to do with a sense of entitlement that this woman had to touch MY child.
I'm sorry some of you feel I reacted harshly--but I honestly don't care. I'm actually surprised that so many of you are ok with the idea of a complete stranger taking it upon themselves to touch your child.
And no, while I didn't see her hand on DD's cheek, when I looked at her, her hand was literally an inch or two from her face, and she was in the process of pulling it away. I think it's very safe to assume that she touched my DD, because why would you have your hand so close to someone's face...for body warmth?

Me too, I would have snapped too. In my case, I am admittedly a germaphobe and this is exactly why DD won't go out in public until 3 mths (other than to the drs). I could not handle the paranoia of a situation like this...not worth it to me.
Beth, I agree with ya. I really do. A stranger has no right getting so close to someone's baby, good intentions or not. There is such a thing as personal space, babies are entitled to that too.

Honestly? It wouldn't bother me -- she was being sweet and kind.
There is not enough kindness and humanity shown nowadays, I take it wherever I can!!
And I always have Purell on me just in case that humanity is less than desirable.

Also don't agree with it. Im also a new mom- but I see it two ways -
1. Germs are everywhere, she's going to pick them up regardless
2. I'm sure the lady had very good intentions and was just trying to be nice, I would (and have) just bitten my tongue and said thank you.
That being said, it would have annoyed me, but I'd of been nice about it.
i agree.

I would have been annoyed. She may have not meant any harm but she shouldn't have gotten so close, especially since the Flu is going around on the island! ITA. And it is NOT ok to invade someone's personal space, regardless of whether they are an adult or a baby. I am sorry if people feel badly that she was trying to be nice, but not OK IMO and I would have and have said something in those situations. I by no means shelter my child, but you don't know who the heck this woman was, where she has been, where she works, etc.

I also feel you were a bit harsh. I don't like people to get too close to DD's, but it's inevitable. ESPECIALLY now that my older DD loves to wave and say, "HI!" to strangers.
I will say though- you said yourself you took your eyes off DD which gave this woman enough time to get close. If this is something that truly upsets you- don't take your eyes off DD when in public to ward off the touchy-feelies......

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
This is why I never let go of DD's stroller or let her out of my sight b.c it is easier to keep people from touching her. While I hate when people come over and touch her cheek or foot, etc a lot of elderly people still try or do it. I do think you were a little harsh I would have just said thank you and walked away and pulled out a wipe and wiped her down.

I didn't like people touching Cailen either, but found it really hard to say anything. I think I once told someone to not touch his hands, when they were touching them, because he puts his hands in his mouth.

It wouldn't have bothered me at all, and I felt really bad for the woman after reading what you said...
Like others have commented..there is SO MUCH meanness in our world. People in a hurry, people who think of children as annoyances etc...all this lady did was compliment a child and maybe touch her face.
I personally wouldn't touch a strangers kid...but so many older women have raked their hands through johnnys hair or sweetly grabbed his hands when i've been on lines shopping that I think its all well meant and nothing but good intentions.

-Also, I would never have jumped to the conclusion that she was touching your child just b/c she pulled her hand back. Maybe she was waving or doing something funny to make the baby laugh...you never know.

I don't think you are a germphope...I think you are a new mommy and protective...which is normal...I was the same way...if I were in the same situation..I honestly don't know what I would have done.....my advice to avoid this happening again keep that carriage right next to you with the carriage facing you...

don't go to Italy! Seriously, everyone has been reaching out to touch my kids since we got here. I don't mind so much - they're just being friendly.

Re: I almost killed some lady in Costco today...
This would have bothered me too. I would never touch a stranger's baby.
I guess you were a little harsh, but that's because you were passionate about your feeling - can't judge you for that at all.
I would have been THINKING the same as you, but probably wouldn't have said it. But that's the "chicken" in me. I did say something to someone in a walmart once who was way out of line with my older DD and got stares from other customers like I was wrong. If you knew the story you would also go
And you DID say thank you!!

I think people are getting confused with this post... This had nothing to do with germs but alot to do with entitlement (as said by poster). everyone is responding about germs...thats not the issue here. But the real question is...did this lady even touch the baby?

THIS is what stands out the most to me. I'm sorry, but like another poster said, seh could have been waving or doing something to make the baby smile or laugh.
I understand the germ thing, but that isn't the underlying issue here....I can't see yelling at someone when you didn't even know if that person even did what you are yelling at them for!
