I am beginning to think I'm missing something

Am I the only person who thinks this way of life is not sustainable for anymore than another few months? I'm not being snarky. I genuinely feel like maybe the myself, and the people I know IRL are just idiots. Chat Icon
The governor himself has said we have to begin to talk about a phased reopening. It is not as simple as us staying this way for over a year, and the government keeps giving stimulus packages. What would result is a worse economic disaster than the great depression.
And I have read that there are absolutely people having to wait on their chemo. Education is online, but it is most definitely not the same as children being in school. My children's school is doing an amazing job, but it is not nearly as effective as them being in class. People arent able to get their mammograms. That is dangerous and horrible.
No, I'm not saying let's end this now. What I'm saying is people on both sides can be very unrealistic. I think many do not see how others are truly facing horrific life circumstances due to the shutdown. It is a very real problem that can financially and mentally devastate for decades to come.

Re: I am beginning to think I'm missing something

You're not.

I truly believe most people are very reasonable about this.

It's just that the ones in their underground bunkers are louder and more vocal about their feelings.

I'm more than happy to stay home through May, maybe even June. But past that the govt is going to have to give me a really good reason why the benefits of keeping us shut down outweigh the costs.

And you're right. I have a close relative who is not getting medical treatment she needs right now because of this mess. She is in pain, she is scared and it could cost her her life. But everything is so backward right now that I believe some of the more extreme people would view her as a noble sacrifice in this war on coronavirus instead of an equally important life.

Re: I am beginning to think I'm missing something

I know it’s not sustainable, but I’m scared and I don’t want to get sick.

I had a mini break down after “teaching” on Zoom today. I lost like half my contracts. So I sort of look forward to Zoom and you feel like you have contact, but then you feel a little depressed like you’ve been tricked. I miss my SO, but he travels all over the state (IT, so essential worker, for schools) and I told him he can’t stay here until this blows over.

I have savings, but I don’t want to blow through them. My life was just starting to get back together financially. Now it will be gone in 6 months if this continues. I’m having trouble filling out paperwork in another language that is so complicated because it’s so bureaucratic. I have seen one friend in over a month because I got locked out of my apartment and she helped call the locksmith.

I’m tired, but I know I’m not alone. I also don’t want to get sick. But yes, it isn’t sustainable.

Oh and I have no wine in the house because I decided quarantine is a great time to limit myself to Zoom Happy Hours only, so not that often.

Ok, vent over. Sorry, I needed to get that out.

Months??? I don't think it's realistic to think more than a few more weeks!

I think that I am fairly split down the middle and I can certainly appreciate both points of view. Thinking that we can wait until there is a vaccine is too much. It won't happen.

We've slowed the curve, now we have to work on gradually reopening everything.

U’re def not an idiot for thinking that way, lol!!! Life is not life living it this way! Even for those that are more susceptible to this virus. I really feel bad for those ppl that live paycheck to paycheck, with multiple family members under the same roof. I just can’t imagine how much difficulty they must be having to survive during these times without any income. My heart truly breaks for them!

I’m cool staying at home. I feel like it’s going to come down to the lesser of 2 evils very soon, just a matter of when. Until then, I’ll continue to stay home.

I am beginning to think I'm missing something

It can't last for months or everything will be bankrupt. The government can't just keep printing money to give out indefinately. I think after May 15th the Governor will ease up a bit. Letting stores that can do social distancing with a strict mandate that people wear masks, start to open and I think that small gatherings are going to be ok. Then he'll wait to see if we get an increase of hospitalizations. I do not think places that hold large gatherings that you can't correctly social disantace in will be open until the end of the year, with the exception of schools.

I don't think they government expects the stay at home order to last more than a few more months. It will probably be until May or June. ( my guess is around memorial day)

The order isn't supposed to stay in effect until the virus is eradicated, but during the peak. Some precautions will still have to be taken, but not to the extreme we are at now.

The federal government recommends moving into the next phase after 14 days of downward trend of new cases & in NY, I believe the state as a whole has started to see a downward trend for about a week. I feel like NY may wait a little longer to make sure the trend is ongoinging.

The governor said that it will be regional, so if that trend happens in say Buffalo, they can ease back, but NYC might have to wait. NYC/LI/Westchester will probably all be considered as 1 area.

You are not alone. I don't want to live in fear that long. Am I afraid? Yes. But I just cannot live in fear that long or I think it will drive me insane. I won't be able to come out of my house if I allow fear to paralyze me if this goes on.

I am just looking to discuss this with someone who thinks similarly. I thought the whole point of everything we were doing was to prevent hospital collapse, etc, like in Italy. We did not have that issue, thankfully, with this shut down, etc. So when does he plan to open back up gradually? They said something about 14 days of decline. But does it mean that if it declines 10 days, then goes up one day, the 14 day count down starts all over again? Does anyone know?

I think the only people who feel this should go on extendedly are ones who are able to sit at home watching Netflix while collecting their regular paycheck or more.

The Capital District (Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga) isn’t expected to hit peak until late May. Id assume other upstate communities have a similar timeline.

No. My son has mod/severe autism with cognitive disabilities and this extended closure is presenting him with severe regression in skills. He needs a routine and has become behavioral because of the loss of routine. He only gets 1 Teletherapy because there's no way he would be willing to sit for the multiple ones he gets in school..... he NEEDS to go back. So I am praying by the time summer comes around school will be open (he qualifies for summer session).

As far as financially I may be on the verge of losing my own job as the company I worked for sent an email out that they are projecting on losing millions of dollars and have already started to lay off part-timers and also implementing an hiring and salary freeze.

I just don't know how this can go on for months on end.

Unfortunately none of this matters to some people. The suffering of disabled ppl doesn’t matter. Only covid related suffering matters now.

Yep- our governor's answer- it's not death.
Domestic violence- not death
Abject poverty- not death
Mental illness - not death
Until it leads to death that is- suicides
But no death matters unless it's Covid related

Unfortunately indeed! I just can’t comprehend how those ppl can’t see the magnitude of a problem resulting from these measurements taken by our state government!

Yes pretty much nothing matters but Covid. Heart attack? Oh well stinks for you. Cancer treatment? Nah, don’t worry about it. Husband beating you to a pulp? Eh no biggie. Family starving because you haven’t had income in 2 months? So go get an essential job you lazy loser.

And that is not an exaggeration, that is the reality of what is happening.

That's pretty much exactly what Cuomo said yesterday.
Unless it's DEATH (and by death he means death by Covid) it doesn't matter.
Get an essential job.
That's his answer.
Disturbing

Yes, that "Go get an essential job" comment from him was very much a "WTF" moment.

Re: I am beginning to think I'm missing something

Cuomo claims to be giving FACTS but the problem is he is not giving ALL the facts. Like today - he was not pleased at all that the antibody results thus far showed a lower death rate. He said 47 times that it is wrong because the death rate is much higher because we don’t know who died at home. Ok I will accept that. But governor math whiz, that means you also have to accept that the infection rate in people we don’t know is also much higher!! It goes both ways and the fact that you refuse to say that shows that you are taking HALF facts and framing it into your own narrative so you can continue your endless power trip.

We did not have a collapse of the hospital system??? It is pure hell in most hospitals right now. The only reason we didn't have a complete collapse is because of the beyond amazing efforts of everyone who works in hospitals (from the janitors to the CEOs and everyone in between). And hospitals are still operating under extremely stressed conditions. And yes, many "elective" procedures had to be put on hold, but for other emergencies, (heart attacks etc) they are still working just as hard to help those patients as well. If anyone thinks that hospitals are now anywhere near back to normal, you are way off base. If you truly want to help and make sure the hospitals do not collapse completely, then staying home right now (as much as humanly possible) is the best thing you can do
