We did not have a collapse of the hospital system??? It is pure hell in most hospitals right now. The only reason we didn't have a complete collapse is because of the beyond amazing efforts of everyone who works in hospitals (from the janitors to the CEOs and everyone in between). And hospitals are still operating under extremely stressed conditions. And yes, many "elective" procedures had to be put on hold, but for other emergencies, (heart attacks etc) they are still working just as hard to help those patients as well. If anyone thinks that hospitals are now anywhere near back to normal, you are way off base. If you truly want to help and make sure the hospitals do not collapse completely, then staying home right now (as much as humanly possible) is the best thing you can do

Where did you read we had a collapse of the hospital system? Even Gov Cuomo said we did not and yes I agree it was because of mitigation. But we did not have people dying in hallways of hospitals thanks to the changes put in place to increase the space available. We were told this was the reason for the shut down, etc, and even Gov Cuomo had one time said the closures were not to avoid us all getting Covid eventually. But now it seems to be a different tune, since cases are on the downward trend. Now there's another huge goal we need to meet, and that's testing 40,000 people a day.

So a near collapse of the hospital system is oK? I didn't have to read about it. I work for a hospital. Within days we increased our bed capacity by almost 75%. Great, right? Sure, but do you think we had the same increase in nursing staff, physicians, respiratory therapists, social workers, janitorial staff, kitchen staff etc? NO. Those that are in that setting now are still going through hell and it only on their backs that the system did not collapse. And I would not be the least bit surprise if many of them come through this with PTSD or worse. Just because there is a downward trend doesn't mean we are ready to open everything up and subject ourselves to a second wave. That (a second wave) could eventually cause a collapse. I'd rather err on the side of caution and keep things closed for a little longer, than risk that happening

Yes pretty much nothing matters but Covid. Heart attack? Oh well stinks for you. Cancer treatment? Nah, don’t worry about it. Husband beating you to a pulp? Eh no biggie. Family starving because you haven’t had income in 2 months? So go get an essential job you lazy loser.

And that is not an exaggeration, that is the reality of what is happening.

That's pretty much exactly what Cuomo said yesterday.
Unless it's DEATH (and by death he means death by Covid) it doesn't matter.
Get an essential job.
That's his answer.
Disturbing

And then u have ppl criticizing and judging others for fighting so they can resume their lives! Seriously, it’s mind blowing the lack of comprehending of some. The “we’re all struggling, we’re all going through financial hardship” is pure bullpoop and shows so much ignorance. Cannot compare ur situation with those who are going through hell to survive in this expensive state.

But is the near collapse of the entire global economy okay? I think that the key to your statement is "a little longer." And I think that most people will agree we can go a little longer like this but much longer and we could quite possibly see catastrophic effects way worse than anything COVID produced.

No, of course the collapse of the economy is not ok either. But we have to find the balance. But rushing to open everything and potentially facing this all again, will also eventually lead to an economic collapse. If everything opens and we have another onslaught of cases, we will be right back where we are now, and probably even worse

But a plan was put into place. A ship came to NY to help. The Javitz center was made into a patient care center. Stonybook created tented areas fo patient overflow. It was precautionary, well worth it and barely any of it even used (even though the disease already silently spread among us). But as Gov Cuomo said no one died because they did not get that vent or medical care they needed. I do agree we need to keep at it for a while longer for various reasons. But to cancel summer camps already, the rest of the school year when there are 5 more weeks until June, and even I believe Boston University likely cancelled their fall semester? That seems to be extreme overkill considering how can anyone know where we will be in 2 more months (in a current downward trend)? I don't know too many people who plan to continue to keep at this once the summer comes. It's going to be something we have to deal with and at some point, face whatever the consequence and not keep living like we are dying.

I agree - life like this is not sustainable for any length of time. But the virus is not going away. As soon as people start gathering again, the numbers go up again. I don’t know what the answer it. But I do see the toll it takes on our healthcare system and those in the medical profession (and even though I work for a hospital, I am not a medical professional or directly involved in patient care) and we cannot experience that again. The reason we are able to even consider “Normal” again is because we have such an amazing healthcare system. But if we break it, we’re all screwed.

The thing is I think that conditions in NY city are what greatly contributed to the quick spread of this virus. That combined with people commuting in and out of the city on a daily basis in packed railroad cars and buses. It hasn't spread NEARLY as quickly anywhere else in the country as it has in NYC because NYC is one of the most densely populated places in the world. Clearly we still need to practice social distancing and NYC will clearly need to use extra precautions and probably remain with greater restrictions for a longer period. However I think it's reasonable to think that if we start reopening things now outside of the city and without people commuting in and out of the city and adhering to social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing etc, I think the rate of infection will remain somewhat steady. But what scares me is that Cuomo seems to have his own agenda and I don't believe it's what's best for the people of NY. I think he's in a bit of a pissing contest with Trump right now and we are the people that are getting pissed all over.

I think we are doomed to repeat history - 1918, Spanish Flu - Philadelphia prematurely ended the quarantine, held a big parade and within 3 days, the hospitals were 100% FILLED and thousands more died. I would much rather extend this than run the risk of having it be much worse down the road. Because if that happens, I fear that not only will our healthcare system collapse, so will the entire economy - completely

I agree with you, but the question I have is this.
When WILL it be safe?
So we can't come out now. Ok, i get it.
What will be different when we come out a month from now?
Or 6 months from now?
Or even a year from now?
That is the question I cant' seem to get an answer to.
I am more than willing to continue this if it meant when we do come out it will be safe- but I don't see how that is possible.
I don't see an end in site.
The second you ease restrictions- whether it be tomorrow or in 6 months- it will start to spread again. And the hospitals will get overwhelmed again
So what is the answer?

There will be a spike, there’s no avoiding it. There is no vaccine and even if there was one, many people will not get it. So many are still adverse to the flu vaccine that has been around for several years and the Flu has been around over 100 years. I don’t get why people keep saying there will be a spike if we open too soon like this is breaking news, news flash there is going to be a spike regardless.

It’s about alleviating the hospitals and the hours of work around the clock that these health care workers are working.

And also our economy is already collapsing, we will find 100s of people on the street if we keep this going. What about the kids in foster care who are getting no help and getting lost in the system? They stopped all services for kids in my area. A few weeks ago they cancelled a zoom call that we were suppose to have to get my son services. I can’t even imagine what is happening to the rest of the children, if they can’t even perform zoom calls. My cousin is a teacher and a lot of his students don’t have laptops or chrome books, many are not learning right now. That is a fact.

I think they need to start talking about how to open camps and days cares for the summer, cancel school for the rest of the year. Slowly start open some things back up. I 100% agree with the pissing comments posted between Cuomo and trump. Also Gov. Murphy in NJ is just following Cuomo.

I can’t even imagine what is happening to the rest of the children, if they can’t even perform zoom calls. My cousin is a teacher and a lot of his students don’t have laptops or chrome books, many are not learning right now. That is a fact.

In regards to these children as well as ones who are in abusive homes, or woman who are getting beat by abusive partners right now-per our Governor- It's not death.
Period.
He's a real peach.

Exactly, I was trying not to get too dark and deep. It always causes a reaction when people start posting that stuff. But you are 100% right and I’m also over Cuomo right now. They’re people who are stuffed in tiny apartments, schools and work were there only outlets and sanity at one point. I wish they would show that sh!t on TV with #wereallinthistogether. We are certainly not.

Life is too short and I learned this firsthand way to early.I didn’t need a widespread pandemic to teach me this lesson. I get what we are doing right now and the reasons, but this can’t stay like this for much longer.

I can't even think about this for too long because I feel physically sick over it. All those poor innocent children..and now they have absolutely no one to help them. Not to mention stress level at home is 1000x higher than normal.

I'd be willing to bet some of those abused women and children might be thinking that death by corona is not worse.

I really feel he needs to apologize for his statements. They were so lacking in any kind of empathy it is disgusting.
Again, perhaps if someone beat him to a pulp and said- well at least it's not death by Corona virus- he'd have a little more sympathy.

Yep and today we got to hear about a man in the Midwest sending masks. We want to hear your plan to get people back to their lives. He just likes to hear his voice and I actually had to turn it off today as I heard nothing new.
He has NO clue and he throws the “my daughters” can drive me nuts sown days. Well goody gumdrops for you. Try working from home, helping with school work and taking care of everything else. All while people are getting on each other’s nerves.

He has no plan. None. That is the scariest part of all this. He has these daily briefings that tell us pretty much nothing. Like you said- he loves to hear himself talk. It's getting old, fast.
All he keeps saying is- The illness is death. As if if you get this virus, it's an automatic death sentence. As if NOBODY survives it. Nobody.
If he can't figure this out, step aside and let someone else work on it.

It's disturbing.

Omg I was listening to that long winded speech as well about the mask and the story about his grandmother, that is all cute but you aren’t saying anything of value. I also had to turn it off and thought about this thread.

I’m watching The Real Housewives now, I can’t take these briefing anymore that have no real information.

I agree. I think he is going to push this up again and he is going to talk about schools next week I was told by someone else as I probably turned it off by then. I am sure it will be canceled for the rest of the year. Stop dragging us along. Do these every other day as you are losing listeners.

I agree. So the man who sent the mask has empathy, how wonderful! But Gov. Cuomo doesn't have empathy for the people suffering from anything other than COVID because it might "kill him". I am also done with him.

He is trying to fool us. He has no plans to change the restrictions or open up school any time soon. I don't know why he is dragging this out by not just being honest.
