I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
DS and I go to the same allergist. (Yes, he's a PEDIATRIC allergist too. This will come in handy for the rest of my story.)
After a few months there, one of the receptionists came and out told me that DS can't walk around the waiting room. Either he sit down, or we couldn't come anymore. (He enjoys wandering around, not screaming or crying. He likes to point out every light and every color around him.) I figured she was having a bad day.
Even other people in the waiting room were shocked at what she said. So, I began bringing a DVD player for him to watch.
Then one day he got very excited when another boy came in. They both started running after each other and were getting rowdy. (I admit that.) As they were both running, the same receptionist came out and yelled at ME "You need to stop Michael from running!"
I wondered to myself why the other kid's mom didn't get talked to as well.
Numerous other things have been said from this receptionist and another woman in the office that works upstairs in billing. One time one of them muttered under her breath that if it's the moms appointment that kids should go to a babysitter. Remember, this doctor is also a PEDIATRIC allergist.
But today was the final straw.
DS was sitting there, watching video on my phone. Another boy came in and I started talking with the other mom. They were playing with their own stuff. The boy was coughing real deep and I was hoping the kid wouldn't come near DS. The mom, in a nice gesture, took one of her son's toys out to show my DS. Well, DS really wanted it. (Of course, it's a new toy to him.)
As every child does, her son FLIPPED out that my son was playing with one of his toys. He was hysterical. I tried getting DS to give him back the toy, but then the RECEPTIONIST came out. She took the crying boy and said what's the matter? He told her.
So she comes up in my DS's face and says mockingly to him "It's okay honey. Someday your mom will bring you some toys so you don't have to take another child's toy." and she takes the toy out of his hands.
I said "She gave him the toy to play with." She repeated that I should bring something for my son so other parents didn't need to entertain him.
So now DS is hysterically crying and then the billing woman comes down and says that I need to stop him from crying because she can't her her phone calls.
I tried to calm him, but I ended up having to leave before I even got my shot. (Which by now was already 30 minutes past my appt to get the shots.)
As most of you know, I am at some doctor 2-4 times per week. (All different kinds of specialists, most aren't pediatric.) I have never had a problem at any other doctor's office. But this one makes me feel like EVERYTHING is my fault. It's only my kid that is a problem at this office.
Now for my needed advice:
I can't write the doctor a letter because the receptionist will clearly open it before he sees it. Do I make an appt with him and tell him why I am looking for a new specialist for both DS and I? Do I just let it go and never go back?
Thanks for reading this. I have been hysterically crying for hours now.

Is the receptionist the office manager?
I would say something to the office manager and the doctor.
In fact, the next time she spoke to me that way I would tell her I want to speak to her supervisor.

Well I would have smacked her with the toy. I would also make an appt, BRING DS and tell the dr that you will be leaving his practice after x many years because he has the most unprofessional witch in the front. I mean really Who does that???? Yeah, I would have smacked her. RUDE!!!

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
my mouth is literally GAPED OPEN !!!!!!!!!
how dare she - who on earth does she think she is??????
i would honestly call and ask to speak with the doctor or make an appointment (make a POINT of going alone) and tell him why you are leaving the practice. You may be the 40th person to complain about this woman and it may be her final straw....or nothing will happen, but you'll never know without trying.
NO ONE has a right to make you or DS feel that way and i'm so very sorry!

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
Honestly I would have called her on the spot and asked her what was wrong with HER and told her to get a grip if SHE cannot deal with children in a PEDIATRIC office.
I would write a letter to the Dr and write "personal and confidential" or "to be opened by addressee only" on it. She is NOT supposed to open that sort of mail.

OMG Kelly, that is unbelieveable! I am so annoyed and mad for you.
I would call and ask to speak directly to the doctor over the phone. If he can't talk to me, leave a message for him to call you back. What a horrible woman.

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
First, have your records sent somewhere else. Then, get a big batch of nerve up, go back to the office and DEMAND to speak with the doctor ASAP. I can't believe they would do that.

You should be furious - what do they expect when catering to young children. Totally ridiculous. That woman needs to find another job where she does not come into contact with the public. Speak to the office manager or directly to the dr.

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
I would call the office & tell them to have the doctor call back.
When he calls back tell him you are bringing DS there because he's a pediatric allergist. Then explain the receptionist behavior & billing person's actions. Then say you don't want to take more of his time but wanted to know whether he thinks the office is still a good fit for you & your son. If he says no, then you have your answer. If he says yes, then ask him to be sure that his staff understands that children will be coming into the office & children sometimes have issues when adults takes a toy away from them.

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
I used to go to Dr. Satnick in Holbrook. Good experiences there. When my son came down with an egg allergy, we went to an office in Commack that Dr. Satnick shares with a Dr. Strauss. We are very happy there. Now that I want to go with my son at the same time, they will be sending my records from the Holbrook office to Commack. We have several friends who use this office.
ETA: Strauss is definitely a pediatric allergist (certified and all that).
Satnick might be but I am not sure (I'm too lazy for google at the moment )

I would have gotten in her face and told her that she will NOT talk to you like that. Then I would speak with the doctor in person at your next appointment about the behavior of his or her receptionists because that is RIDICULOUS.

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
I'm sorry to crash but that is apalling. I would contact the Dr. AND the office manager to let them know how you've been treated by this receptionist. It's unacceptable. She is harassing you and your son. You shouldn't be bullied out of going to a Dr. that you like because of a cranky old woman who is miserable at her job.
I'm sorry you had to go thru that

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
I really don't understand how in other professions that deal with the public regularly don't act this way but I hear it about doctor's office's all the TIME! We are about to leave our doctor due to the rude receptionists as well. Only one of them is nice.
I would have more sympathy if I didn't deal with the public every day myself and get treated rudely each and every day and STILL keep a smile on my face.
I just don't get it I would send the letter and request a meeting with the doctor. That this continues to do on is just beyond me!

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)
I think this woman just plain out doesn't like you and is taking it out on you!!!!! It's so wrong and I feel so bad for you. I would march myself in there right now, W/A SCREAMING CHILD and demand to speak to the doctor immediately. He/She will come out. Tell him/her in front of everyone in the waiting room how this woman has treated you. Wrong, she should be fired and you should be accomodated and......if they took you on time, maybe you wouldn't have to entertain your son b/c they can't keep appointments. Not your fault, not ONE bit!!!

Don't Cry! Some people are miserable rude and disgusting. She is definitely one of them. ALso don't feel bad about how you handled it. I know I would have said the exact same thing to her because I wouldn't expect this woman to verbally demean me on purpose. She has issues and you don't need them. Call you Dr before the end of the day.
