I would call the office & tell them to have the doctor call back.

When he calls back tell him you are bringing DS there because he's a pediatric allergist. Then explain the receptionist behavior & billing person's actions. Then say you don't want to take more of his time but wanted to know whether he thinks the office is still a good fit for you & your son. If he says no, then you have your answer. If he says yes, then ask him to be sure that his staff understands that children will be coming into the office & children sometimes have issues when adults takes a toy away from them.

Kelly, OMG I'm so Chat Icon for you. What a total ******!!! I agree w/ what Barb said....that is ridiculous!!!!

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)

I would tell the doctor what has been happening, and you really don't think you can continue seeing him given his staff's attitudes. I would say this even if you have plans to go to a different office ASAP--he needs to know how the staff treat the children. It's weird that she singles out your child, but maybe she took an instant dislike to the fact that he walks around?!? I would probably switch doctors, unless you feel this is a dream doctor or there are no others close by. But even so, I would still complain about the staff.

Sounds wacky to expect a toddler to sit still in a waiting room. If she expects that, she's nuts. You would think dealing with children, they would know better, but apparently not. It's funny though, I see a rheumotolgist every few months, and it's mostly me and 70 yeAR Olds in the office. The staff and the patients in the waiting room are usually soooo nice to DS. I've never had anyone reprimand me about him walking around, and I would almost expect it there. I always bring him with me on those appts., because everyone makes a big fuss over him and it goes well.

I think this woman just plain out doesn't like you and is taking it out on you!!!!!

This is what I am thinking. It all seems to be directed toward me.

All I can think of is it's been hell there since my insurance changed. (Not my fault, work changed it to a different company.) A few bills went to my old company and I explained that the wrong company was billed. Another receptionist said "oh, I see what happened." (No big deal.) And I saw her talking with this other receptionist. I assumed she told her she didn't officially change all the paperwork or something.

So innocent, but don't take it out on my kid because my INSUARANCE changed. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)

First of all, I think it's appaling that these two women would act this way toward a child. Clearly they are not fit to work in any position which requires working with children.

I would make an appointment with the doctor directly and when asked what it's for, simply tell them it's a personal matter.

If you need a referral, I have someone really good that both DH and I have seen. He is also a pediatric specialist so let me know if you'd like his contact info.

I'm so sorry Kelly. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG her fingers would've been broken the second she put them anywhere near my child (yeah, doesn't solve the underlying problem, but what can i say?!). I can't even imagine the scene that I would've made- out of line does not even BEGIN to describe what she did. I would definitely call and speak with the Dr directly. Tell him everything, leave out nothing. It really is a shame that people get away with such behavior.

i have to agree with Christine too- i dont know what it is about the field, but i'm tempted to consider another Ped's office too because of their receptionist as well. I haven't even had a run in with her, but just listening to her talk to other people... she's just nasty and i feel like its only a matter of time until she says something to me and well, that wont end well Chat Icon Chat Icon

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do Chat Icon

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)

I cannot believe this receptionist. I would be livid! I actually left an obgyn practice because of the poor customer service that I received from the office staff and nurses.

If you decided to leave the practice, I'd just leave. However, if your doctor is good, then I would clearly tell him the horrific service you have received at your next appointment.

Depending on my mood, I would have caused a major scene or would have just swallowed my anger. I'm normally a non-confrontational person but I think I would definitely have cleared my mind at that woman. She has some nerve!

ITA with all of this. If I liked the doctor enough, I wouldn't let this B keep me from seeing him.

When I was a kid, we went to a general practitioner in town. The receptionist always had attitude, but my mom would just blow it off, she was a "get more flies with honey" type of person and just dealt with her. One time, my dad took me for a visit and at the end of the appointment, when he requested a bill be sent because he wasn't expecting any charge other than the co-pay, the receptionist got nasty with him. He made a huge scene and stormed out. The doctor's wife also worked there and heard the whole exchange. The receptionist called later to apologize (my mom talked to her) and I am sure it was because the doctor told her to do it.

I think most doctors want to know if there is a problem with their office staff. There are a few who want the "gatekeeper" type up front, but those are doctors I wouldn't want to go to anyway.

I would find another allergist for both you and ds, and before requesting my records be sent I'd ask to have the doctor call me. I'd explain to him exactly why he is losing 2 patients, and then give him the information on the new practice to have the files sent. That gives him the opportunity to try to keep you at the practice. I'd also make sure he knows that other patients have seen this behavior.

He might not be aware of the problem. I know someone who is a doctor who lost a lot of patients before someone had the guts to tell him his front desk staff were really rude most of the time. They were really nice to him since he's the boss so he was stunned to hear that. He would have liked to know well before that so he could have handled it before it severely impacted his practice and his personal paycheck.

Oh hell no. Uh uh. I would take this to the supervisor, the supervisor's supervisor, anyone until this woman was fired. After I gave her an enormous piece of my mind with an enormous chunk of her asss in my claws.

I would go in there honestly without your son just bc it may get heated and have a face to face with this woman, and then tell your dr that because of this woman you are leaving the practice and you hope he/she knows that this woman is making them lose patients....

This is what I would do. If it happens again I would call back and tell the dr. you are leaving the practice because of the continued behavior.

DD and I see the same allergist (he is also pediatric and adult) and in there waiting room is at least 6 bins of toys. If you lived in NJ I would have recommended him Chat Icon

You defin need to speak to the doctor. This lady is a biotch and needs to be put in her place. You shouldn't have to find a new doctor when you like the one you have. That lady needs to pull the stick out.

I am sorry for what you experienced. In college I was a receptionist in a Dr's office. Being on the other side, I am sure many a patients left our practice b/c of the way they were treated by some of the staff (both in person and on the phone). I know for a fact that the Drs WANT and NEED to know when this stuff happens. They cannot correct it if they are unaware. This is your health and care but it is also in a way a business...they need patients in order to be successful.

Re: I am FURIOUS!! ( VERY LONG, but I need advice.)

I would make an appointment and leave your son at home. When you have your time with the doctor I would tell him what has occurred and mention it was difficult for you to get a sitter and that if this lady is going to have a problem you are no longer going to be able to use his services. Most doctors do not know how their staff acts. I had a doctor that was horrified to find out that patients waited over an hour to see him. When he found out he fired the person that made appointments and hired somebody new who has been much better. My point is that the doctors don't really know what happens in the waiting room unless the patients tell them.

If you bring your son with you then you may have another problem which would cause you to skip your appointment. And I think you need to make sure this gets addressed ASAP. IMO writing a letter will not ensure the doctor is informed of the problem. Good luck and I'm sorry this woman made you feel so bad.

I would def. say something to the doctor. That is sooo rude! I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

I switched allergists because the receptionists were soooo nasty also. I wonder if it's the same one... Dr. Guida in Bay Shore. If not, stay away from his office too.
