Re: I am outraged!
if you have to shop anywhere like that, support target. they're a much better company. i wish you would read up on walmart and maybe change your mind about this company. they are not morally right. to save 2 cents, it's not worth it. you are caving into what they want and making them bigger and badder.

Oh I've read up on them, I'm an Economist that used to analyze retail trade in the US.
I do most of my shopping at Target, but when it comes to stocking up on toiletries, non-perishable food, etc. I have no problem shopping for the lowest price, and 90% of the time that is at Wal-mart.
Guess we'll have to agree to disagree!

This is no different than what any insurance company does. While I sympathize with the woman, Wal-Mart is entitled to seek reimbursement.
ITA.
I don't mind Walmart at all. Are they the best employers? No. Do people still work there? Yes. Clearly there is some demand for jobs there or they wouldn't have any employees.
That's the way markets work.
Sure, and clearly there was/is a demand for jobs in child sweatshops too. Does that make it right? Just because economically disadvantaged people are willing to work there because they are desperate and can't find any other job does not make Walmart's practices right.
It's capitalism at its worst and it is disgusting. I REFUSE to shop there, I don't care if they were giving their products away.

Re: I am outraged!
Ok...some questions to think about...
1. whats the point of making plolcies if your not going to follow it?
2. so its ok to make an exception just one time? What quailifes as in exception?
3. why would 1 settle for X amount when those injuries are so significant?
4. why didn't the lawyer see this information when they settled the orginal case (taken from the link on text article posted on the first page)
My conclusion is the lawyer for the victim is wrong as he didn't do his job. For that type of injury, they shouldn't of settled on such a small amount...he should of known WalMart was going to recoup its money. Its almost like getting paid twice for 1 doing 1 thing...
As for the insurance, prehaps its an outside company and its a policy that everybody follows. And now that its blown up to be public information, nothing can't be done becasue everybody would do the same thing.
It would be intresting to see the $ amount paid out by the insurance company.
What Walmart should of done is take care of this behind close doors but too late now.. Nothing good will come out of this. Hateing WalMart isn't going to affect the company either...

Child sweatshops are a completely different topic. 1. Children are pretty helpless. 2. People, especially children, in countries where there are an abundance of sweatshops lack alot of rights that we have here.
These are causes for concern because the children don't really have the ability to leave these jobs.
American workers, however, are blessed in that they can choose to work wherever they want. Walmart is able to "get away" with their awful practices because people need jobs and are willing to work there. If they weren't, they wouldn't.
I know you feel pretty passionately about this, but it's really just the way the capitalistic market cookie crumbles.
I applaud you in your boycott. But as a consumer that seeks the lowest prices, I will not join you in it.
There are PLENTY of jobs out there for what you call "economically disadvantaged" people.
Sheesh, I'm starting to sound like DH.

I think the point is that the HORRID conditions Walmart imposes on workers in China. there was a special on cable about this a few months ago and it was absolutely awful!!!!! they even allow the managers to BEAT the employees employees are expected to LIE to the press and say they only work 6 days a week, when they work 7 days a week and no less that 12 hour days, and very often - more than that. workers who don't live near the plants stay in these filthy dorms - you can't even imagine how small these rooms are and are shared by multiple people. the employees have to pay a lot of $ for that housing + utilities.
many companies who import from China have much better working conditions!

I was illustrating a point that just because people are willing to work somewhere doesn't make the company OK or a place we should shop. I think people who are living in poverty are willing to take some pretty awful jobs under awful and dangerous working conditions.
My point is that we as a society need to value human rights, NOT corporations' rights. Everything is NOT ok in the name of capitalism.
