I am pi$$ed at my mother - she let DS sniff VICKS VapoRub

DS is staying with my parents overnight b/c we have to go to a wedding tomorrow night. He isnt feeling well and has a cold. I called to see how he was doing and if she's been using the aspirator to help clear his nose. My mother giggles and said, "well I used my own home remedy." VICKS!!! I am f*cking furious. After I flipped out she swore she didnt put it on him at all. She said she put it on a tissue and let him breathe it in thinking it would help clear him up. I have no idea if this is dangerous or not. I know he was not really taking big sniffs or really sucking it up b/c he doesnt know how to do that, he is only 6 months, but come on. I hated Vicks as a kid, still do. The smell, it burns, it's gross. I know they have Vicks for kids, but this is adult Vicks and he is only 6 months. I told her that I'm not going to let her and my father watch him anymore if they keep doing stupid $hit. And their respoinse everytime I tell them not to do something, "well we did it to you and you survived"

I use menthol oil and vicks on my sons pillow when he has a cold and have done since he was 3 months old. Its absolutely fine as long as it wasn't on his skin (they do baby Vicks for that)

I understand how it feels when you get worried but in my opinion you need to relax a little!

It isn't like your mom rubbed it all over his body and let him inhale it all night, she just let him smell it! It won't hurt him at all, if anything he prob didn't like the smell and turned his head.

If it were something more serious I could completely understand your concern, but I think you need to let this one go....JMHO!

I've used Euculyptus Oil on a tissue near them when they were completely stuffed up. At times, it was the only way I could get them to take a bottle.

I'm sorry she didn't ask you first. I know I always researching old school remedies & what is now deemed unsafe (ie rubbing alcohol for fever are not safe).

Thanks girls. I figured I was over reacting. I usually don't get crazy about these things but I remember HATING Vicks as a kid and thought it burned. I just didnt want it to burn his skin or his little nose, his skin is sensitive and so is his nose. Her intention was to have him snifff it up his nose to help clear him up. This stuff is strong and made for adults, not infants

I do not mean this as rude, but, she is your mother and you survived. If you are going to have someone babysit, even for a night, you are going to have to trust them. ESPECIALLY grandparents b/c they are going to think they know better anyway.

I am sorry she did something that you didn't want her to do, but at the same time, she thought she was trying to make him feel better

i agree with the others.. relax a little bit! life is WAY too short, and your mom and her grandson need to enjoy their time together. i agree with your mom that you survived i could understand if she let him drink a bottle of vodka or something- LOL, but this is something minor, and its not worth getting so upset over.

Actually they have vapo rub for infants, it's not as strong, but essentially the same stuff. I know it is frustrating when someone doesn't ask, but in situations like this people just use their instincts.
