I am pi$$ed.. this post may offend some so enter with caution

I just got a call from the Nursery at my gym that last wednesday DD and DS's were exposed to a child who has come down with chicken pox. i do not know if this child is over 18 months but i do not remember any young children being in there. Now i have to watch and worry if my 8 month old twins are going to get the chicken pox or my 3yo DD will get a mild case of them. I know people have their own opinions about vaccines.. but I leave my children in a Gym nursery to get 2 hours of sanity to myself. I should not have to worry that my children are going to catch somethng like this.. You should have to show proof that your children are immunised before they are allowed to come into a public place around children.. ti si requried for schools and daycares.. why not this.. i am annoyed that i may now have to worry about my preemie infants getting Chicken pox.. i have enough problems with thier RSV shot,, now this.. i am sorry if this offends anyone who is waiting to get your child vaccinated or have doubts about it.. but if you are going to take you children to a public place wehre there is other children it should be required...

Ok vent over!!!

OMG I'd be angry also.

Yet I work in a school & know from the nurse that children can still get the CP w/ the vaccine, but it would be a slighter case.

Also, they are just telling you this now, a week later?Chat Icon

I understand your anger over the whole issue..I would be angry also...BUT...the chicken pox vaccine is only 80% effective. The child that came down with the chicken pox may have been vaccinated.

That's awful!! I would be pizzed! I get mad at parents that bring their kids to daycare sick (I'm talking viruses, fevers, etc. not colds) so I would be livid about Chicken Pox!!

I hope they don't get itChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Personally, I agree with you on the vaccine opinion but more specific to this situation I have to say that if the parent's knew this child had the chicken pox...or even if they had some indication that the child wasn't well they were wrong to bring them into a public childcare facility - that aggrivates me to no end. I understand that it might have been discovered after the fact...and in that regard it's unfortunate (coming from a daycare mom who long ago gave up that battle) but the delay to tell you for over a week is messed up.

Chat Icon that your little ones don't get it.

ETA: You might want to question the facility about how they sterilized the room and toys before bringing your kids back.

i can completly understand your frunstration. But that being said my 2 oldest girls were vaccanated for the chicken pox but they still contracted this childhood ilness. It isnt 100% effective. I was Pg with my 3 child when they came down with it. I hope everyone stays healthy.

yes you can, same with the flu vaccine. that is why DD did not get either.
My gf's son got the vaccine and he has the flu that now the dr.s think is going into bronchitis.

I totally understand why you would be angry.

But to be honest, it is my opinion that these are one of the risks you run by dropping off a child at a gym daycare. I don't know about your gym, but mine has never asked me for any documentation about immunizations before dropping her off. So I assumed that it was the same for everyone else. You run the risk that the other kids are not immunized at all. That is why I waited until DD had her immunizations before dropping her off. Even at day care or public schools, children can be exempt from vaccinations.

As for the chicken pox, while it sux, its not something I would stress out about too much until they show signs of it. Thankfully the chicken pox, while uncomfortable, is not as dangerous as some other conditions.

The mother probably had no idea the child had the Chicken Pox, the signs probably showed up later. It's contagious before symptoms are even shown. At least she informed the gym so they could let other parents know. Like others have said, the vaccine isn't 100%. I hope your kids don't get it! Chat Icon

I understand too how mad you are, I would be too and have been.

BUT on that note I was vaccinated for Chicken pox and had it as an infant anyway...my Drs passed it off as a fluke. Well apparently it was amild case and I got it AGAIN at 15....

So Even vaccinated it can happen.

ITA. I can't see someone knowing that their child has chicken pox and bringing them to the nursery at the gym. It's not like a cold.

I 1000% agree with you!!!!

But since I just had a kid with shingles in my class, I can tell you the incubation period is 7-10 days and the mom might not have known the child was exposed. I would hope she would not be that selfish and drop her child off known that they had been exposed. At least she did notify the gym that is more than the mother of my student did (and she is a nurse and knowns I am pregnant) until well after the fact).

I hope that your kiddies are fine.

I hope your babies don't get sick!

But - as has already been said - you can get the Chicken Pox whether or not the child has been vaccinated.

There was a small outbreak in my sons school a year ago - and they DO require immunization records. He didn't get sick - but if he had I would have been forced to recognize that sickness is an inherent risk in any public setting.

And - as others have said - during the incubation period (when the child is contagious) you can't even really tell that there is anything wrong. So I doubt the mother brought her kid in with complete disregard to the welfare of other children.

Having said that - I DO get a little agitated when people send their kids into school KNOWING they are ill. I mean - a cold is no big deal, they happen and I send my kids if they have a runny nose or whatnot. But the people who shuffle the kid off to daycare after the child spent the night puking. Or the chick that I used to work with who dosed her kid with Advil when her daughter woke up with a 103 fever - and sent her to school anyway. Chat Icon

I think unfortunately you need to be prepared that any time you take your kids out, even to the food store, there are germs lurking.

DD just got over a bad sickness and I am sort of keeping her in for awhile to try to avoid further exposure to all winters nasty germs. I know it's not 100% but it will cut down.

Good luck and I hope everyone stays well.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree, I know someone whose child got chicken pox even though he was vaccinated and it took his parents a day or two to figure out that the child had it b/c he was vaccinated.

Even though there is a chance of still getting it, even with the vaccine, it reduces the risk to about 20%. I don't think that is pointless. Everybody thinks Chicken Pox is a mild childhood illness but about 100 children die every year from it. I think an 80% reduction in the risk of my child getting it is worth it.

To the OP, I agree that anyplace that cares for multiple children should require proof of vaccination.
