I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I just finished watching a Baby Story and I'm not going to lie - watching this woman have a natural birth scared the living daylights out of me. The amount of pain that she was in, screaming on the top of her lungs, and at one point she looked like she was just going to die. It just freaked the hell out of me.
For those that are having natural births (or want to try to have one) do you ever watch A Baby Story and does it discourage you from trying to give drugs pain free?
It is just amazing to me that a woman will really go through a pain that must be so excrutiating and not give in and get drugs. I think I would cave in a heartbeat.
Again, not trying to start drama at all - I know everyone has their own preferences, I just would love to know how you mentally prepare for this?

I am amazed by women who are able to give birth without an epidural.

I have to agree with you on this one and I don't think there is anything wrong w/you being scared and no matter what anyone says unless you've been through it, I don't think there is anything that can "mentally" prepare you for that pain. I took Lamaze, and it did nothing. It was painful VERY painful for me. Of course everyone is different, but I know for myself I won't go through it again! I had my first child naturally 16 years ago, and I will NOT do it with this one. That was the WORST pain I have ever felt in my life, and alot of people say you "forget the pain after a while", but I didn't. Granted I made it through and he was perfectly fine when he was born, but I see nothing wrong with having an epi done if it's going to help you.

Same here. I always know that I would not have a natural childbirth because I have a very low tolerance for pain.
I do applaud women who does have a very natural childbirth.

I think everyone has their own threshold for pain and how they vocalize their pain too, if that makes sense. I recieved the epi with DS at 7cm and instead of thinking about it I just said yes when they asked if I wanted it. Looking back labor was worse in my head then in actuality. I never yelled durning the contractions I just tried to focus and was constantly breathing through them.
I sometimes think that the shows like that edit it to make it look worse than what it actually is.

I would like to be able to do this naturally! I am no saint.. I am just not one for the drugs.. I am allergic to alot of pain medications so most of my life my surgeries and such have always healed naturallly.. Even those elective surgeries...
I think MENTALLY.. it can't LAST that long. What is the longest it can last for? 2 days? I HOPE and I can do it!

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
It didn't scare me..OK maybe just a little! I had never given birth before so I could only hope that it would be OK!
I wound up getting had an epidural for an hour before I delivered (with back labor) . I had the same pain about 9pm and got the epidural around 12pm and delivered at 1:25pm.
I am not a vocal person and I took hynobirthing. I actually think all I said was ..:Ow..this hurts" while pushing and Doctor Hanauer kept saying :" I am sorry honey". I totally remember that part!
I watched the contractions on the monitor and my DH and mom told me when they were coming. I squeezed their hands and the rails of the bed. I will say it hurt like nothing I ever felt but not like I was going to die or anything! I was more afraid that it would just get worse..but it never did!
I hope these shows don't scare you! Every expecting mom that I tell my non-scarey story too tells me that they were remembering the positive experience I had while in labor! I wish a postive experience like the one I had for everyone!

You think so? This woman was freaking out and her midwife was like "I'm nervous - I've never seen her like this before" -- the woman says "I've never been like this before" -- the husband says "Don't lie - you are dramatic like this all the time - just last week you threw the computer on the floor" --- I was cracking up thinking - This guy is going to get his *** kicked as soon as she has this baby.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
My thought on the subject is:
Try to have your baby without any pain medication..it really is nice to be able to just "be" after the baby is born..
BUT be open to the epidural should you need it...as well as being open to the C-section should the doctor be advising one.
I have given birth 3 times and although I was able to give birth completely natural, without any pain meds, each delivery was different..

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I watched a C-section on the discovery channel about 10 years ago and it has scarred me for life. since then i have watched very few birth shows, but the few i have seen all showed natural births that looked quite pleasant, considering the circumstances. Most of them seemed to be those water births in the bathtub.
Personally I have no tolerance for pain so a natural childbirth is not even an option. If I could be knocked out for the entire labor, I think I would opt for that!

So would I!!!! I also think that the best childbirth would be at 9 months the stork would really come and drop the baby off at the front door one morning. I have to talk to someone about this and see if we can make it happen!

Quickly...
I just went through 2 days of active labor, sent to hospital, then sent home.
Water finally broke on it's own...went through 16 hours of hard, natural labor, the cutting of my cervix in 3 places, a catheter, pre-eclampsia and pitocin... ending in a c-section and I would do ALL the natural laboring again before the after pain of this c-section!!

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
My best friend had her second baby on A Baby Story - no epidural. It was crazy - even when she said she couldn't take it anymore and the doc offered her an epidural she still said no. I cried sooo much watching that.
I don't know how she does it, but her fear of needles is stronger than her fear of pain. And she has a pretty high threshhold...but I don't know if I can do it like she did.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I don't give natural child birth a lot of thought because I must have a C-section. I understand the women who want natural childbirth but I would still opt for drugs if I could have a vaginal delivery. What I don't understand is the attitude that the people who want drugs are inferior or that people who had C-sections missed out on something.

I honestly don't watch any of those shows.
You know what, I have heard the best and worst experiences with natural labor. Some women said it was not that big of a deal afterwards, some would never do it again without an epi.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
With my first I had an epi. With my second my labor was fast (3 hours) by the time I got to the hospital I was 9-10 cm. I had no chioce but to go all natural. It was worse than I could have ever imagine. I even kicked a nurse off of me and she YELLED at me. I am now so scared of having to go natural again! Thats all I can think about right now and I am only 22 weks. I am amazed at the woman who have natural births and chose to do it again! They are heros in my eyes! I had 2 friends that just had babies. They kept telling me they were planning on doing it without drugs I told them that if I could do it then they could (I was trying to encorage them) but they both caved. I wish I could do it again natural because I felt GREAT after having my DD but I am in no way going to make myself go through that pain unless I have another fast labor with no time for the epi. AGAIN, I truly look up to woman who can do it!

Wow, I am surprised to hear that the c-section recovery was bad for you, I guess everyone is different. My c-section recovery was cake compared to the 5 hours of labor I had before the section

I was all for the drugs when I was PG...I wanted nothing to do with the pain...however, DD came 7 weeks early and very quickly and I had no time for the EPI. However...you do what you have to do, and when you are in the moment, you don't have time to think about it...you just do it.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
My doula was on this show a few times -- and she told me that the producers TELL THE MOMS to scream and act out and get really crazy! They have even refilmed, having a mother scream louder after delivery to put over the actual sound!
I wanted to try natural - women did it forever - and after my months of reading, classes and preparing it isn't going to happen. I am very disappointed. However, I would have gotten the epi if I felt I needed to.
Studies do show that babies born without any drugs used on the mother are more alert.
BTW I've only watched this show like twice.

I can't believe that the producers would do that. That is making such a mockery of the process. We should be able to see it for what it is...I mean they tape certain shows where the women are medicated up the wazoo and don't make a sound...
Anyways...I think if a woman can make it through childbirth without drugs, good for them! That wasn't me at all, lol! I loved my epi and plan on having one with future babies if at all possible. And my child was so alert, and stayed that way for a while and my epi was full force. So who knows?
I honestly don't view drug free childbirth with any different viewpoint than those who get medication. I don't view the women as saints...that's just me. Like others have said, everyone has a diff. threshold of pain and back labor is very diff then reg. contractions....I think EVERYONE who makes it through carrying a child for 40 long long weeks, deals with the pain of pregnancy, the aching limbs, the swelling, the hormones, the changing body etc.iis saint regardless of the way the child is delivered!!

I did all natural twice and I was so loud my Dr. told me I was going to scare all the other Mom's into going home! It was the hardest thing I have ever accomplished!

What I found weird was how everyone would say to me "Well if you can't stand the pain, get the epi. There is no shame in that."
I was not out to prove anything to anyone, not trying to be "better" by going natural - I just wanted to try it for me. I never thought of it as being "better" than anyone else, but people get very defensive when you tell them you want to go natural.
Having a healthy baby is the end result that we all want - I'll do what I have to to get that healthy baby.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I labored at 7cm for 5 hours without an epi- it was the worst pain of my life- I was chewing on DH's shirt. I might have still refused the epi for pushing if my Dr. had finally said I was at 10cm and time to push- not sure.
But, in the end, I needed a c-section so I got the epi- if I had known that, I of course would have gotten the epi hours earlier!
