Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I watched all those baby shows before having my first, and it didn't discourage me at all. I ended up having a natural birth, and yes it was painful as he!!, but I plan on going natural again for this one, so obviously for me it wasn't so bad that I wouldn't do it again.

What I found weird was how everyone would say to me "Well if you can't stand the pain, get the epi. There is no shame in that."
I was not out to prove anything to anyone, not trying to be "better" by going natural - I just wanted to try it for me. I never thought of it as being "better" than anyone else, but people get very defensive when you tell them you want to go natural.
Having a healthy baby is the end result that we all want - I'll do what I have to to get that healthy baby.
That goes along the lines of everyone else thinking that they know better than you do. They think that you don't understand the possible pain of going natural. Like I said, I do feel that some people who go natural feel that any other way is a cop out, even for someone like me, who has no choice medically. But I also see where people catch slack, unfairly, for wanting to give it a try.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I know a couple of women who have given birth without drugs, including my mom with two of my siblings, and I definitely applaud them A coworker had two natural births and her labor was no more than two hours each so she is my idol I would love to deliver naturally but I will definitely accept the drugs

i am not going to kid myself and say I'm going to try natural. I know me better then that.
But I would never tell someone that they should get drugs or they shouldn't get drugs. Nor do I feel that women who go without are trying to "prove" something.

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
I watched the baby story more for information rather than what it was going to be like. I also saw my sister deliver naturally. Neither scared me.
My friend who has an enormously high tolerance for pain delivered 3 months before me. She showed up at the hospital & 20 minutes later delivered. She told me the pain was excruitating. That scared me.
But it scared me so much that I was absolutely expecting the worse pain ever. My expectations were so high - at one point I turned to the nurse & said "When does it get really bad?? "
Her answer was "You're 8cm. You're not going to need anything."
By overestimating the pain, it actually helped me.
And truthfully - it hurt ,but it wasn't unbearable. Contractions come in a wave. You only need to hang on & breathe out during the peak of the contraction.
It's a choice. While I'm glad I was able to do it both times, it's the end result that counts more than how you get there.

I am 98% sure I am having a scheduled C-section. However Dh and I were discussing natural and a part of me wants to try. Most of the moms I have met say it hurts but its manageable. My mom however scared the daylights out of me. She said it was the worst pain ever-thanks mom!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not PG or even TTC but I have always wondered:
What is the reason behind giving birth naturally? Is it better for the baby?

I am amazed by women who are able to give birth without an epidural.
Thanks
In my case, I didnt have TIME to get one but I would of gotten one! I do watch those baby story and for the ones who do it "natural" I so FEEL for them!
I think that going through it natural just made it easier for afterwards...no drugs therefore no side effects and well, I felt like a million bucks after she was born.

I think if the epidural did not exist, we would not much of choice. Just like our moms did. It would be all natural!
The fact that we have a choice has changed people's view on birth "options".

My mom had an epi for me, it just didn't take- so it was available 34 years ago.
But truly, "back in the day", the moms were knocked out for the whole birth. My nana is amazed that women CHOOSE to be awake nowadays

my mom was totally knocked out too! "Back then" you didn't meet your newborn until at least 5+ hours afterwards, as you were still knocked out! That was the norm.
Although having a m/c absolutely sucked, the one good thing was that my D&C required an epidural, since I had a head cold that day (and I could not take general anethesia). I think a lot of women have a fear of the epidural, and I feel for me - that part isn't an "unknown" anymore, so I'm not afraid of it. I found the epidural to be a breeze, but I know many, many women are afraid of it. In my case, since I know the epidural is doable, I wouldn't mind trying natural, since I know if it gets bad, just bring on the epi!!

Re: I am so not trying to start drama with this I swear Re: Natural Births
As someone who's witnessed hundreds of births (I'm an L&D RN) I can say I've seen the worst and I've seen the best. Nowadays you don't see too many womem going completely drug free usually it's women that arrive too late for the epidural. I've seen women scream and yell and get completely out of control to the point that we have an entire medical team practically wrestling with the patient because she is putting her baby in harm from lack of control. On the other end of the spectrum I've seen women completely in control no screaming or yelling and I've seen everything else in between. The point I'm trying to make is that everyone has different pain tolerances and everyone has different ways of dealing with the pain. Some scream some stay really quiet. While labor is unlike any other pain I'm sure you all have an idea of how you deal with pain in general to give you an idea.

All I can say is that it was the most amazing and most empowering experience of my life to have natural childbirth. It wasn't easy but so worth it to me. I would do it that way again in a heartbeat.
