janet like everyone says life goes on you have to live life to te fullest and not let fear get in your way i dont remember if i ever told you this when i was 10 years old when i was strangled and attacked by a man when i lived in lower manhattan with my parents and i was sitting in front of my building and this man grabbed me and dragged me in the building and strangled and tried to rape me i was lucky that i fought him and got away and i still go out late at night the streets in the city are safe i know you are afraid but you cant let fear get in your way i will be there to get you to radio city maybe we can go to central park and just walk around my sister doris lives right there 2 blocks from central park and her and her son always go out at night   love mom heres your borther and sister to help cheer you up
this was supposed to HELP her get over her "fear".....
is this for real? it cant be.

Perhaps before you make the big trip, you should take baby steps taking smaller trips with friends during the day, etc.
I really don't think you should attempt to go for your first time THAT NIGHT...
you know?
Have you talked to a psych about this fear?

I work in a building which is near the bomb attack. There are police all over the place - actually I think you are more secure coming into NYC then ever now. Also, Radio City is a tourist area and completely safe, especially on the weekends. I really would not be worried at all. Just take a taxi from penn station (there is a taxi stand there). You will be fine.

Don't be scared!!! I live in Manhattan and I go to all parts of the city all the time and everything is okay. To get from Penn Station to Radio City, just go outside of Penn and hail a cab. Easiest, most stress-free way to do it. You'll end up paying about $10.

I refuse to allow these turds to destroy my birthplace. End of story. NYC is still a hell of a lot more safe than many other cities. Think of how many attempts were thwarted than those that succeeded.

I used to work for a group of doctors. Some of them had family in Israel and would go visit, and I was always so nervous for them. I would think, "Why would you go somewhere when you know your life is in jeopardy just walking down the street? Why doesnt your family just move somewhere else?". I never understood before 9/11. I do now.

NYC is my home and I am not letting anyone change that or put fear in me.

The truth is, every minute we're alive, we take risk. We just usually choose not to be too aware of it. If we really thought about rational risk, we wouldn't do a lot of things or go a lot of places.
But we all, at a certain point, push the risk aside and focus on the fact that the odds are small each time.
That is especially true of a terror attack. the odds of being killed in one--even in NYC are smaller than the odds of a lot of other horrible things happening. Just acknowledging that fact is calming for me.

thanks you ladies for having my back as i did not see the post. just for you FYI that is my birth mom. Not the mom i had my original fear with. I will talk to my birth mom about this.
I wish I had the time before to go "test" the waters and make a trip with friends.
the only day off i have is Sundays and it is hard to get people to do this with me.
Hey maybe a LIF trip to the city to help me with this.
I hate that i have this fear and it is not because of terrorism that i have this fear(which that part does not help) but it is more of getting mugged or hit by a stray bullet. sad I know. But that is my fear.
thank god kryssy can not see this. she would have a ball laughing at me.

You are not alone in your fear of the city. While I work in the city every day & don't have that - I know my dad does.
He grew up in the city & lived there until his 20s. He hates going into the city. My mom loves it so on occasion he does go but it doesn't change his fear. It's not terrorism but crime related.

if you're scared of being mugged or hit by a stray bullet, then just don't go to so called 'bad' areas.
I can tell you that 90% of this city is safe, and certainly the well populated, touristy areas are much much safer than you could possibly know. If you're going to Penn Station and to Radio City you'll be just fine. Don't let your fears prevent you from living life.
I'm guessing that your perception of what it's like here, and what will happen to you are waaay worse than reality. You've let yourself believe the hype about how 'bad' it is here and built it up into this giant monster of a problem. It's really not. All it takes is a few visits for you to see that life in the city is really not that bad.
But honestly, if you're walking around looking scared or lost, then you're sort of acting like a target to anyone who would want to mug you.
Try not to be scared, make more visits, and your confidence will definitely come back.
Btw, the chances of a 'stray' bullet hitting you in the city are pretty much the same as on LI
