Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
Youtube is blocked at my work, so I can't watch it, but I have heard about it.
I am a supporter of extended nursing, but this sounds developmentally inappropriate to me. I know our culture tends to wean early but, as far as I know, there aren't any cultures where it is "normal" to breastfeed an 8 year old.
I'm surprised that a child that age would even be interested in breastfeeding.

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
umm that is just odd! i think it seemed pretty unhealthy (socially) the way the girls were so focused on their moms boobs.

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
I didn't watch the video, but ummm.... sounds a bit excessive to me I breastfed DD until she was just over 2. For many parts of the world, that's considered early. I think worldwide though the average age is around 4 or 5.

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
sounds like she will stop them by high school graduation. she did say no one ever goes to college or gets married and is still nursing. I can understand a toddler who wont wean. But they seem old enough to be able to comfort themselves. Also over 3 Million people have watched this video. I think these children were influenced in there thinking by what there mother says about breast feeding

These girls spend their days drawing pictures of breast feeding, naming their mom's breasts, not wanting her to wear a bra to set her boobs free, and then the rest of the day picking berries and playing the ukelele?
Time to get these girls an Xbox or something!!!
OMG...this seriously made me pee cause I was thinking the same exact thing!
Sooooo disturbing!

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
What bothers me is that at 8 years old, a mother should be teaching her child to learn to comfort herself in other ways. The social ramifications that these children will face are going to be big ones. I do think there is the potential for psychological damage to be done, and she is being an irresponsible parent by continuing this. I am completely pro-breast feeding, and even extended breast feeding, but this is not normal and borders on psychological and emotional abuse, imo.

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
All I can say is I hope this family has space for their girls to live with them into their 40's. Makes sense that the kids won't BF in college or when they get married b/c with their socially stunted growth they won't have to worry about college or getting married. Naming their mother's breasts? That's so bizaare!
I do plan on attempting BFing - for as long as the first year. However, I've known plenty of healthy people (including myself) to have been "formula babies". My mom told me that when I was born at 6lbs I refused to BF, they tried to wait to give me a bottle, but I didn't have enough excess weight for it to be safe. I too think it's too generalized to suggest everyone should BF. What about babies rushed off to NICU after birth who have to be separated from mom in order to live??? What is that suggesting that BFing is more important than life itself? I think BFing is a choice and should not be inflicted on everyone as the "right" choice. I honestly see no difference in the kids I know some who were BF'd others who were not. The only reasons I want to do it are 1 - financial (cheaper than formula) and 2- b/c I have to go back to work after only 12 weeks (which I personally feel is too short) I want to have some time alone with the baby where we can bond and I can leave my work and everything else at the nursery door. After a year of age, we can find new ways to bond so I don't feel compelled to continue - if I make it to a year. And thirdly (the selfish reason) I've heard your body goes back to it's prebaby size a bit faster if you BF. I know it's selfish, but if it works - why not?
I didn't think those girls were any smarter than kids their ages, in fact they really seemed socially stunted. I'm not into video games, but yes, someone should send them an X-box.

Re: I am supportive of extended breastfeeding ... BUT
Wow that just made me uncomfortable in my own house. How is she going to say that she does not want to do it anymore if she thinks it is the norm?
