I Can'T BELIEVE I AM A BFING FAILURE AT 5 WEEKS
dd has major nipple confusion after the ped told us to supplement and will barely latch on at all.....i am heartbroken and in tears...i know its not the end of the world and i am pumping but not getting much, but its just hard since it came so natural the first time around w/ dd#1....

Oh, I'm so sorry.
Have you tried a lactation consultant? They may be able to help!

Re: I Can'T BELIEVE I AM A BFING FAILURE AT 5 WEEKS
when ds was born i had SO MUCH trouble nursing.... he never latched on.. so i opted to pump exclusively... then at 3 weeks pp i developed mastitis... so i had to pump and dump while giving him formula... i was devasted.. but i ended up pushing through it and i am still pumping at 10 months... even with another on the way... it is hard... a friend once told me that bfing is one of the hardest things you can do..... if you are pumping and dont feel you are getting enough try pumping every two hours for a few days.. i know it is grueling, but it helps... that and oatmeal... lots of oatmeal...

I would continue pumping like a champ if you still want to give your DC breast milk. I felt like a failure as well, but if DD couldn't latch well... I continued to pump and pump and pump knowing she was still getting the milk that way.
Call a lactation specialist and good luck!

Have you tried using the nipple shields? That's what helped me get thru the beginning. DD wouldn't latch on for weeks without them.

Take a deep breath and BREATHE>......
YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE... SUpplement, keep pumping to maintain your supply and either
A) get a Lactation consultant or B) contact La Leche League, most leaders are LC and its FREE
Your baby WILL got back to the breast...
ALexa was 100% bottle fed the frist 8 weeks of her life and latched at 7 W 5 D....... SHe is not EBF!!!

I just want to offer because I know how hard breastfeeding can be (and heartbreaking if it doesn't work out). But did you try a lactation consultant? Some of them are really wonderful.

Re: I Can'T BELIEVE I AM A BFING FAILURE AT 5 WEEKS
thanks everyone...I was doing nipple shields but felt it was decreasing my supply and basically was replacing myself as a pacifier (she would fall asleep when sucking on me but not really eat...) its weird on sunday she was doing great and now its back to stinking again 2-3 mins max...she can latch but then gets discouraged.....or something...I don't know what! i will try a lc or la leche league...i am such a prude though it will prob be hard....lol....very private - even the fact i posted here amazes me!
does anyone here go to lll mtgs they can recc'd?

Re: I Can'T BELIEVE I AM A BFING FAILURE AT 5 WEEKS
You are doing a GREAT job. The problem with the shield is essentially, it is like a bottle nipple, so no wonder some babies *get confused*. BTW- do breast compressions when she falls asleep, it helps to get the milk flowing faster.
Getting her latched for even 1 minute a feeding is progress.
Rather than LLL (who I found a bit militant in my area- and I'm a total BFing advocate!), try a private LC. I adored mine, and still contact her from time to time with random questions. She was very clinical as well as sensitive to body issues, so the factor was much lower than I thought it'd be.
You are NOT a failure. I got my kid off the nipple shield- and you will too.

i think the nipple shields are a great idea.
I would work with someone to try to get your baby back on the boob.
And try not to put so much pressure on yourself!

Re: I Can'T BELIEVE I AM A BFING FAILURE AT 5 WEEKS
Your not a failure I stopped at 5 weeks also. I couldn't keep up with her demand. My supply didn't seem to be there and I was getting very stressed with the whole thing. I'm ok with formula feeding even though at times I wish I was still doing it. But I know at least she got 5 weeks worth of it. Your a great Mom
