I experienced the worst tantrum I've ever seen Ava throw today.

Ugg. I'm just so tired and drained and sad and I feel like a failure. I got home from work and Ava was here with the babysitter. She ran to the door to greet me, threw her arms around me and was squealing with delight. The next thing I know, she's on my lap and starts slapping me and kicking me and screaming bloody murder. I tried EVERYTHING to get her to calm down adn nothing was working. She scared me, that's how bad her tantrum was. I ended up putting her in her crib because I was scared she was going to hurt herself or me. She screamed for 5 minutes in there while I cried hysterically in my room. I just didn't know what else to do. I went in and finally got her when she quieted down to a cry. She threw her arms around me and said, "I want to go downstairs, Mommy," so I said sure and when we went downstairs, she said, "I'm really hungin, Mommy." Thank god she can tell me what's wrong, and usually she does, but to watch her go that balistic today was scary and just made me feel so bad I just needed to vent about that because I feel really overwhelmed by her lately.
My mom reminded me that this is how she was when she was first born. Screamed all the time, and just as that passed quickly, this will, too. Somehow, when you're in the middle of it, though, it seems like it's never going to end.

That must have been terribly scary! I am glad that it passed quickly. Hopefully those episodes will be few and far between.

Rachel- you did the BEST thing by putting her in her crib. This way she was safe and you were able to get yourself some time to regroup.

DD is Ava's age and we are going through the same thing. It does help if I can get her to calm down and tell or show me what she wants. I too have to put her someplace safe to have a fit but it is heartbreaking. I guess we all get through it.

You know, kids do those types of things sometimes - they just get these huge emotional responses from seeing their moms after a day at daycare or with a babysitter, and they are so overwhelmed they have difficulty processing it and organizing it into the "right" channels - know what I mean?

I'm sorry you had to go through this - Cailen will get happy to see me when I come and get him, and then sometimes reach his arms back out to his teachers as if he is done saying "hi" to me.... Don't take it personally - even though its hard

It's funny that she would mention she was hungry.

I was going through the same thing with Talia in the afternoons...

this may sound crazy - but I find that giving her a snack (usually a fruit) as SOON as she wakes from her nap has helped.

Maybe it is a blood sugar thing? I am not sure - but it has helped us...so I figured I would mention it to you.

That being said - I have been where you are, and I am sorry - I know how hard and heartbreaking it is.
