She cut her lip when she fell today.....Please, I need advice on my DD!
Okay, I this might seem like a weird question. I have posted about this before but noone responded.
My DD has some gross motor skills delays and she is receiving PT through EI. She has improved a lot so far, i think. Anyway, the one really problem that is troubling to me is that she doesnt know how to brace her falls with her hands. When she falls down she falls flat on her face and a lot of times when she falls backwards she clunks her head right on the floor because she doesnt fall into a sitting position so she just lands on her tush.
The reason I am writing this post today is because this morning she fell right on her face and cut her lip on her tooth. She was bleeding, which got me so frantic.
I have brought this up to her PT and she said its from not crawling and being delayed in her gross motor skills.
So, my question is....did anyone's DC ever have this problem and, if so, when did they learn to stop their fall with their hands? Im so paranoid that one day she is gonna lose a tooth, get stitches or get a concussion.
She is 13 months old.

How is her lip? Did you give her some ice?
My opinion is that she will eventually learn to brace her falls. Can you remind her to put her hands out? This is a skill that I never had to teach m girls, but I know of people that did. Ask the PT for some suggestions. She/He should be able to give some to you.

Thank you for your response!!! Her lip is okay. The problem is is that im not sure if she will understand if i told her to use her hands when she falls. She understands things but not everything. I guess if i kept saying it she might get the hint. Ill also ask the PT. I just get so worried.

I can't imagine that it's directly tied to her not crawling. There are numerous DC who have never crawled, and they learned to protect themselves. I don't have any ideas, but just wanted to put in my 2 cents about the not-crawling connection.

this may sound weird but maybe you can ask the pt if u can "practice" safe falling and give the verbal "hand down" or something?
i know it's so totally different but my ds and i practice sitting down from the standing position so he doesn't get "stuck". it may be awquard and you may have to do it a million times but maybe it would help.
sorry i don't have any good advice!

I agree. DS crawled before he walked and he has fallen a few times and has done the same thing to his lip.
