I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
I see all these posts about Yo gabba gabba ( no clue what that is by the way- I just know its a cartoon, right?), and all these other shows.
We dont have cable, I never grew up with it, my DH sometimes mentions getting it but we figure, hey its one less bill we have to worry about.
My DD is 5 months old and I know that right now its not an essential BUT it would be good to have for the future, no?
Right now we have channels 2,4,5,7,9,11,13. Really no cartoons or anything. Is she missing out? Am I missing out LOL, I would love for somthing to distract her SOMETIMES LOL.

No. She is NOT missing out! Plenty of kids don't watch TV.

I don't think you or she are necessarily missing out because at this age she doesn't really need to watch that stuff and you can always get DVD's to play for her.
I didn't have cable at home... I didn't have cable until I got married and moved in with DH and I'm fine! We have it now and literally the only thing that DS watches is Yo Gabba Gabba, nothing else. If we didn't have cable, I'd just put on the Little Einsteins DVD or something like that.

Well, YOU are missing out LOL I love my TV! But, DD is definitely NOT missing out.
A kid's show has never been on my TV. When we are just hanging out, DD is in the swing facing US on the couch and we have the TV on so we are half watching, half playing with her! She definitely knows how to get our attention.
I HATE kiddie shows so I don't want her to know about them until I absolutely have to!

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
Nope. We didn't have cable until a month ago. We got it because my cousin came to live with us while going to nursing school. My DD is almost 2 and still has never really watched Tv. She doesn't knwo who Yo Gabba Gabba is or any of those other shows.
She does on the other hand LOVE to play in her playroom for HOURS by herself She plays with her baby dolls, makes them food in her play kitchen and feeds them
She knows her letter and numbers, loves to draw, and dance and play make believe. She has learned to use her imagination to entertain herself and not have to use television. To me, that is a gift we gave her.

hahha, yea I think I am, I hear about all these shows on TLC that I think I would like!!!
Yeah im probably asking for trouble by starting her on those shows, but sometimes I wish something else would distract her... I feel like her own personal clown all day long LMAO!!

DS's favorite shows are on 13! We rarely watch Nick Jr. 13 has Sesame Street (on 7-8AM), Super Why, Thomas the Train, Sid the Science Kid...I love the PBS shows.

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
Even though we have cable, I do not allow DD to watch TV. I do not think she is missing out on anything. And she is seriously one of the happiest babies I've ever seen. I would not worry. Trust me, she won't know the difference! Do not get cable for that! Besides, I have no idea what Yo Gabba Gabba is about so I can't answer that. I do read with DD a lot and we do nursery rhymes and sing.

Ditto!
And I am also with Maria-I want her to be able to play using her imagination, not sit in front of a TV.

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
PBS is channel 13 - pbskids plays cartoons all day long. they have plenty of shows to choose: Super Why, Cat in the Hat, Angelina Ballerina, Word World, Sesame Street, etc.
but I don't think she's missing out, especially at 5 months. Neither of my kids were interested in TV at that age.

Definitely not...we don't let SD watch that much TV...I think it is a terrible terrible habit that I'd like to avoid her forming...bad enough her father and I have it.

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
DS is 15 months old and while we DO have cable, he has no interest in any show other than sesame street (and sometimes not even that). I tried to get him to watch curious george (channel 13 also) since he likes monkeys but he was totally disinterested.

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
No, she's not missing out. My DD just started to watch ELMO on Seasame Street (which here in NJ is ch. 13, not sure if same in NY). She actually knew all the characters from books, her diapers since they have the characters, etc. before she watched the show. When I put it on, she freaked so we went with it. You could always buy movies/DVD or rent them from the library too if you want to show her something else...

Re: I feel bad, is she missing out? Am I missing out?
We have cable and Liam still doesn't watch it. It is reallllly annoying. He loves sesame street. He watches it on 13 every morning and we watch videos online. FTR. he didn't start really watching it until recently and he is 20 months. So don't worry. We never had cable until we were older and there are always videos. At this age.. the show they want is never on at the exact moment anyway so they can always watch a video..
P.S... totally off topic.. But, my child is going to think i am the BIGGEST loser because I still say "videos"

If it aint broke, don't fix it.
She will be fine. Yo Gabba Gabba is great, but I wish I never let her start watching it.
