Re: I got a speeding ticket this morning!
wow, so sorry to have missed such an enlightening discussion sorry you got the ticket, beth - but GOOD FOR YOU using your pba card. we work our azzes off and we give the cards to people we want to help out. if someone were a true criminal... a measly pba card ain't gonna do a thang. but people make mistakes, it happens. there is professional courtesy all over the place. cops handing out their pba cards is no different. there are some cops that don't honor pba cards. there are times when i haven't - if the card isn't current, not filled out on the back, or the person is being a jack-azz. or sometimes you just don't have that discretion. but if i pull someone over who is courteous and apologetic, and has a family member or friend on the job, i will absolutely honor that card. and there's nothing wrong with that. it's looking out for a family member or friend of someone who has my back on the streets. it seems to me, that the people who are saying it isn't right to use pba cards or work the system to get out of a ticket are just jealous. none of them know someone that's a cop... if you did, trust me i highly doubt you would COMPLAIN about someone using it to get out of a jam. if someone has a card and chooses not to use it, that's their decision. but the option is there. i would hate for someone who has one of my pba cards not to hand it over and at least try to help themselves, though. and as for the poster who said that it isn't right that the cops don't have to abide by the rules... give me a freakin' break i deal with garbage every single day. i get spit at, cursed out, swung at and shot at. I AM NOT THE CRIMINAL. and i'll be damned if i'm going to pay a speeding ticket because i was running late on my 45-mile commute to work, so i went 45mph in a 30mph zone, if i don't have to. don't hate because some of us have ways to get ourselves out of a jam. there's 35,000 cops in the nypd alone. i'm sure you could find a pba card and not be so bitter

Re: I got a speeding ticket this morning!
i used to be an EMT and got pulled over twice and got out of getting a speeding ticket by showing my badge and apoligizing. my DH got pulled over for speeding and knows a retired highway police officer and got out of that ticket also.
beth, i find nothing wrong with what you did. the posters who are against what you did are totally out of their minds, i can't belevie how this thread got so out of control. i would do whatever i could to get out of a ticket

thank you and thank you JenG
my Uncle would be so mad to see that people give people who use PBA cards a hard time
I didn't want to play - what my Uncle has done for the city card- but he has been there thru every thing bad you can remember, the 93 WTC bombing- he was special services at the time
9/11- he wont even talk about it and retired soon after
he gave up holidays with us and every NYE to be in times square making sure everyone was safe
and if one of his fellow highway patrol wants to give his neice a break on a speeding ticket ( not a DWI, not an accident, not reckless driving) so be it!
when I got pulled over- the first thing I did was say sorry- handed the officer my info and my card with my Lic.- I saw he was highway patrol and my PBA card- signed by my Unlce but from 2006- b/c I gave Jake the 2007 card
if the PBA gives them out- why shouldn't you use it
my Uncle would be mad at me if I didn't!

Re: I got a speeding ticket this morning!
Didn't read all the the pages but good for you if you have a connection and can get out of it, not sure why you wouldn't do this?
Honestly, so few people obey the ACTUAL speed lImit I sometimes wonder why they don't up it here slightly in NY. Hope you don't have to deal with the points and going to defensive driving! I could understand if you were drag racing in the middle of the night and doing 120 but most, not all, but most people do tend to drive over the speed limit, whether they want to admit it or not.

Well said! DH was a cop in Brooklyn and now out here in Nassau. I will certainly use his card and pull the "cops wife" routine if I should get pulled over. I am happier he is out here now since I mostly drive in Nassau. Stay Safe!

Re: I got a speeding ticket this morning!
omg, i cant believe this post got to be 11 pages in 1 day...
this topic will always be sore between people, when one person gets special treatment over another... Thats like someone posting that they go to starbucks each day and gets $5 of free coffee from their friend, yet you go each morning and pay the $5 for your frapachino... you wouldnt be that happy about it, but its the same idea
I can see that if a person is a cop or something, that they would have a badge thingy for themselves... and maybe a pba card for extra person like a spouse...
.. but what i dont understand is how cops can hand out so many of them, to nieces newphews aunts uncles boyfriends girlfriends. I mean one day years ago I went on a date with guy and he gives me an extra pba card from his dad) and he would give themto all to his friends... I never used the card but i was amazed how many these people actually get them
To me it seems that preferential treatment getting out of tickets should be more selective... LIke the cop- only his wife and children have to deal with living with odd hours and shifts... I think only they should get the extra treament to be a little more fair....
i guess everyone has to just agree to disagree...
