I hate first grade math
why cant they just show 6 = 6 =12? like why does it need to be 8 steps into grouping of 10. I feel like this is logic that is way above a first grader. Image Attachment(s):

I feel like I'm in the minority, but I like the Common Core math. Yes, it takes more steps, but the kids really get it!

DD is in first grade and while we do have to go 6 ways to Sunday to figure out 5 +8 let's say, what you just posted is insane Thank God she hasn't had to do it like that yet.

I'm with you both.
I'm not sure how I feel about first graders seeing it this way but in the end, as a math geek, this is how I would solve these in my head. My bigger concern would be how long they get to focus on this kind of problem in order to master it. When common core was first proposed, addition and subtraction was supposed to be almost a year long focus in first grade. Not sure how much they really stuck with that idea at the elementary level.

My problem with it is that we were all older when we figured out how to group and break it down in our heads.
My 6 year old gets confused with all the steps needed to get the answer. We were stuck on a problem last week for almost 15 minutes, and he just yelled out 'Why can't i just use my fingers?"
I wish they would get rid of common core, it puts way too much pressure on kids today. There is an assessment on everything they do. It has ruined school for many kids. They dread going because there is always so much to do and tests to take. I talk to other moms in the class and their kids dread going to school as well. We were just told that starting in February, they will now have to read their own tests. Until now the teacher has read them out loud. Now they need to read 4-5 pages of paragraph like questions and answer them, in a timed setting. I mean c'mon!!! They are just learning how to read!!!! This is setting them up to fail.
If there is ONE POSITIVE THING I could say about Turmp being President, is that I HOPE he can get rid of this crap!!!

I hate first grade math
I dislike it too. My main peeve is the fact the instructions on the worksheets suck!!!
Last night's homework - DS had circles grouped in 5s - two groups had lines through them and teh rest of the circles didn't... He had to solve. He was supposed to count the circles and subtract 9 to get the answer... It only mentioned subtracting 9 on the bottom of the worksheet in small print. I had to ask him to explain it to me.
Thankfully he gets it.
I've heard second grade math is a million times worse.

Yeah the thing is, I don't think they are ready for this kind of logic and reasoning at their age yet. DD is great with doing it the old school way, this to me just complicates matters to get the same result and she gets frustrated.
I get the logic of it, but I think they are too young for this logic at 6 years old

Re: I hate first grade math
DS loves this: he sees it as a game. They reviewed addition and subtraction cold and just started this month getting to 10. He really sees it in his head. That being said, I completed a high level of math in college (math minor) and have trouble with doing this. But I always counted on my fingers!
It's not just common core. Our school does "Singapore math" and it's the same thing.

Most of the stuff is just developmentally inappropriate for their ages.
Just wait until you get to 4th grade CC math. I have a very bright student, but the steps involved for a simple division or multiplication problem make homework take FOREVER on many nights.

I am also in the minority of liking the CC math. We don't understand it because we haven't been shown the other foundation parts.
They are building a foundation that is used in the later grades. I have a ds in 1st and a dd in 3rd. I have seen how the things my dd learned in 1st apply to what she is doing in 3rd.
When my dd was in 1st I went to the below site to learn the new terminology and see what the changes were. It was extremely helpful.
http://www.oakdale.k12.ca.us/ENY_Math1_M1Lessons
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is a link to watch videos on each of the lessons. You have to throw out how you learn math because they are learning a completely new way.

It is my understanding thou that this in not common core math but the singapore math program. So even if you get rid of common core I think that most districts would elect to continue to teach singapore math.

I disagree. Most of the kids I think are ready, it's the parents that are not. If you are taught this way from the start you learn to think this way, and it's a better way of doing math than memorizing things, which is how we were taught.

She is not pro common core and was quoted three days ago saying this:
“In deference to the U.S. Senate confirmation, I’m not giving interviews, but just between us let me share this,” DeVos told the crowd gathered in Grand Rapids. “It’s time to make education great again in this country.”
“This means putting kids first,” she said to cheers. “This means expanding choices and options to give every child the opportunity for a quality education regardless of their Zip code or family circumstances. This means letting states set their own standards and finally putting an end to the federal Common Core.”

My DD is in 3rd grade now and while I do agree ALL she knows is this way I don't know it's really a "better way" overall. I think it's great she has an understanding of how to arrive at a particular answer however, there is something to be said for memorization of basic facts as well.
My DD is extremely bright and loves math but because they don't spend time on drilling them on basic facts I find she STILL has to count in her head a lot whereas I feel that she NEEDS to be able to see 6+4 and just KNOW it's 10 without ANY thought. She NEEDS to know 3X3 is 9 without ANY thought and she doesn't. That to me is a failing of this math program. Everything is explain, explain, explain. But guess what??...................in the REAL WORLD you aren't constantly explaining your thought process when you solve a problem. You just "do the math".
To that end, I have flashcards for her and I do "Minute Math" worksheets with her because while it's great she can take this complicated route of breaking down numbers in her head to arrive at an answer, I want her to have her addition and multiplication facts MEMORIZED so there isn't any thought process. It's slowing her down at this point.

My son is in third and he is memorizing the times tables so it's not like memorization is totally out in singapore math. I feel like addition and subtraction in your head will just come to you at a certain point. It's kind of like reading - I just think that part is developmental and eventually it will click but I feel like the foundation that this math teaches is better at helping children understand where that number comes from. I would rather them be slightly delayed in being able to do it in their head and get the better foundation than just be taught it by memorization.

Unfortunately part of the problem is that teachers can't teach a subject to mastery now. They have such a rigid curriculum that they are not allowed to go back and reteach. And sometimes kids are learning so many different strategies, they don't have time to truly master one. The curriculum spirals so every year they add more on. For example, my third grade son did a unit on properties of multiplication, distributive, associative, etc.). The 7 grade resource room students I teach also do similar work). The problem with both is the unit goes so fast a kid who may be struggling with something never truly understands it.
As for Trump getting rid of cc, he wants to put it up to states and ny is gung ho cc. However, he also wants charter schools which essentially takes money away from public schools to put a profit into his and his friends pockets. So anyone that thinks we are better on the education front with trump is an idiot. And in full disclosure the same for Hillary.

I teach first and I will be honest, it is a PITA. Very convoluted. I also teach gifted so many of them have their math facts memorized so for them to go back and break apart/rebuild when they got the answer 10 minutes ago is annoying.

Also, something missing from the OP's picture is WHERE they are getting these other numbers. They need to see that for the 6+8 problem is that 8 is made of 4+4. The way it is in the book is that 4 is pulled out of thin air. Many kids are visual learners and need to SEE why certain numbers are used.

Yes! This is what is throwing me with this one. My DD does 1st grade common core math and while it's a bit convoluted- her worksheets make more sense than this one does

Thank you! I read through that whole thing and really couldn't understand how the "so" lines were proved. To me it was just a bunch of addition and subtraction equations.
I have one in first and one in third and when helping my DD in third, I struggle. I will know the answer and have absolutely no idea how to help her show the work.

The way I look at it is, in the real world you don't just 'do the math'.
Why does everyone hate that typical train leaves the station at xyz mph and train leaves station at abc mph and when do they meet?
They hate it because they just know how to 'do the math' and can't convert word problems to formulas to numbers to solve.
From what I've seen, the common core math gives students not just a list of number problems. It forces the kids to convert life situations to math problems and then to solve. It's pushing them to take abstract concepts and making them into rigid formulas and then using math to solve. This probably helps kids in the longer term in physics, calculus, etc.
