OK I need some help again with a First Grade Math Problem
Ok this is driving me a little nuts. I think I figured out the answer but I just wanted to get some feedback from you guys.
Here is the mat problem: Pick 1 number from the box. The choices are 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9
Use words, numbers, or pictures to tell how you would make a 10 to add 9 to the number you picked.
Then write 2 addition sentences.
10 + _____ = _____
_____ + 9 = _____
DS picked 7 and I helped him figure out the addition sentences. We came up with :
10 + 6 = 16
7 + 9 = 16
Is this right?

Re: OK I need some help again with a First Grade Math Problem
Are you missing a word where it says 10 to a 9? I look at the equation as
10 + ___ = ___
___ + 9 + ____ (should that last + sign be an =) ?
so for your example 10 + 6 = 16 3 + 9 + 4 = 16 is that what it is asking? Or is it what you wrote? I am not sure...

OMG yes it is supposed to be an equal sign. Ooops didn't see that. I will edit it and make the change.

OK I need some help again with a First Grade Math Problem
WHO NEEDS THIS??
The only time I need any math skills is when baking (and I'm missing a measuring cup and I have to do fractions), when I'm reading my paycheck, or when I'm trying to figure out what the new price of a Kohl's item is after an additional 60% off the yellow sticker.
.......that's it!

These word problems are freaking insane! It's no longer just 2 + 2 = 4. Oh no, now that simple equation has turned into a complicated word problem.

I think it's 10+9= 19. The wording doesn't make sense but I think they are asking you to add 10 and 9.

LOL this recent Unit Topic that we did was about adding doubles. So we got this one equation of 4 + 5 = _____ . looks easy enough right? Oh hells no! This is how it had to be solved. 4 + 4 and 1 more is 9. I was like "really?"
4 + 5 = F***ing 9 end of story!

My DH (the numbers guy) and I spent quite a bit of time on YouTube trying to understand this crap.

It's a whole bunch of complicated crap. Some of it is about doubles, doubles plus 1 and 2 facts, making 10 to add 8, making 10 to add 9.

Re: OK I need some help again with a First Grade Math Problem
Say you picked the number 5 so the problem would be 9+5, but the strategy is to make ten to add, so it would be 10+4=14.
Their thinking is its easier to add 10 to a number so you just take one away from the other side to make 10...same when they teach the double plus 1, doubles are easy to remember, so when adding 5+6 you should think 5+5=10, so one more is 11.

We picked 7 so it would be: 10+6 =16 and 7+9=16

You can use any of the numbers: 5,6,7,8, or 9 right? You just have to write out the math sentence and show the work using a 10 frame correct?

I teach 1st grade in va, we teach the different strategies, but I would never give it to them for homework!! It's just supposed to teach the students different ways to add and to help with their number sense! My parents would be sending me emails all night long if I sent that home for homework!! I just send regular problems and the students can use any strategy they learned! Good luck!!

Re: OK I need some help again with a First Grade Math Problem
I teach 1st grade math, and I went to a workshop on Thursday for a new math curriculum that we are getting, and they put up a 1st grade problem that I couldn't solve. Seriously. And I am a teacher. Its getting SO hard for these kids!
The 3rd grade ELA exemplar text (the one we are supposed to look at to get an idea of the text-complexity on the test) is TOLSTOY. In 3rd grade. I am not kidding. Now I would like for someone from the federal government to come into my classroom and tell me how to get a group of 7-year-olds with autism to read Tolstoy and understand it.
