I have a HealthCare question
lots of people i know are in an uproar b/c they think that illegals are going to get free medical care b/c of the new health care reform...
can someone explain if this is true or not...and do illegals already get free healthcare? for example, what happens if a non-citizen without insurance was brought into the ER for treatment?
this particular topic always causes an argument among my family members and i am just looking for some education...
thanks!
ETS: i think i took out all the "citizens" !

Re: I have a HealthCare question
- undocumented persons are not covered by the new legislation.
- anyone (legal or illegal, documented or undocumented) who shows up at an ER will receive medical treatment, regardless of their ability to pay. this has always been the case and nothing in the new legislation changes anything.

Re: I have a HealthCare question
Those who get twisted knickers syndrome at this idea need to ask me how many US citizens I know who've received free E.R. treatment by "borrowing" an insured friend's medical card and social security #.

Re: I have a HealthCare question
Whether or not you have insurance, and ER must help you, but you will be billed. My dh didn't have his insurance for a little bit before we were married. He went to the ER for kidney stones, they treated him, but billed him.

Not to play the semantics game, but not all non-citizens are illegal immigrants. There's thousands of legal residents living in the US with visas or green cards who remain citizens of other countries. They have the option to buy health insurance in the US and might possibly be under the same obligation as us citizens to purchase healthcare under the new legislation, but I'm not sure about that.

Re: I have a HealthCare question
Illegal immigrants will not be allowed to buy health insurance in the exchanges -- even if they pay completely with their own money.
Illegal immigrants are not eligible for Medicaid.
this bill does NOTHING to help illegal immigrants. it leaves them eligible for NOTHING as it did before.
they still MUST be treated if they show up at an ER...but perhaps someone could try to pass a legislation to let them die in the hospital corridors...you know, since they shouldn't be here anyway.
it is becoming clearer than ever to me that MOST people have not read even the basic bullet points of this bill and "know" only what has been regurgitated to them by their favorite nightly "news" host.

This seems fair to me. It is what I would have wanted done when my family came to the US.

Re: I have a HealthCare question
i know people who keep arguing saying that b/c healthcare is going to be "free" any and everyone whether they are a citizen or not is going to use it - and that angers them b/c it's going to cost us money in our taxes to hlep pay for illegals to get the same medical treatment we do...
that is the complaint that i hear over and over and i am just wondering if there is any validity to it at all...or if they are just spewing out things they read in a chain email...

They aren't going to get free health care but at the same time, more than likely do not currently pay and won't be paying in the future for their care, whether they are billed or not. There is nothing to hold over their heads to force them to pay which in turn is why we have higher insurance premiums and dr's charges are higher.

this is what my DH and i thought - we said they are going to get the same thing that they get now and not more...if they show up at an ER and are sick they are going to get treated and yes, they might get a bill that they will probably get away with not paying - but so what - are you really going to tell me that you'd let someone suffer or die? or let a child be sick? but to people in my family it's not right that the US takes care of people and blah blah blah and no matter what we say they think that people living in the US illeglly are going to somehow make out like bandits with the new healthcare reform...
to be honest i don't understand all that much about what is going on - i try to understand and learn as much as i can but depending on where the info comes from it's always skewed to one side or the other...i don't have a law degree so sometimes reading things can be a little confusing for me - just being honest here...but it really annoys me when my family goes on and on about things that i am pretty sure are fabricated, or just comes from an obama hate email they got...so for myself i just wanted to make sure i wasn't missing something...

My mom works as a pediatric nurse- in the ER- an illegal immigrant came a couple nights ago with her baby, the baby had a fever, they gave her motrin, the fever went down.. the lady said she brought the baby because she didnt want to BUY motrin... she had a coach purse
I have no issues with legitimately sick illegal people getting care when they need it- but my mom has millions of stories that are similar to what I posted and she's only worked in the ER for about 2 years

I see it every time I go to the ER. My pediatrician has even told me...they use the ER as their general doctor. Which is why we pay so much!

how did your mom know that she was an illegal immigrant? I don't doubt that it is possible, it's just that immigration status as far as I know is NOT something the hosptial asks for. they ask for biling information, but up until the other day and until 2014
MILLIONS of LEGAL residents were also without insurance.
I've worked in healthcare and medical billing for a LONG LONG time. the fact is, illegal immigrants bilking our system is the LEAST of our worries. more often that not, it's our perfectly legal next door neighbor screwing us over.
I am sure your mom has encountered countless legal residents in the ER that do the SAME EXACT THING. are they more entitled to bilk the system b/c they legally live here?
immigration is just such a wag the dog issue right now. it's really sad to me.

no. fraud, malpractice insurance and profit is why "we pay so much"
like I said, there are PLENTY of perfectly "american" people screwing you over, whereas MOST illegal immigrants shun places they have to give information b/c..HI, they don't want to get caught.

Well it is a controversial issue.
No one wants to deny anyone medical care...but unfortunately I feel illegal immigrants have taken advantage. We pay for their medical care and education and god knows what else. And more and more keep coming.
They know they dont have to be legal to be here...their life here living illegally is 10x's better than their life in their own countries where they are legal.

I agree with this as well. At my old job I worked with someone who between her and her husband made a lot of money (her husband owned his own mortgage business) yet her child's medical coverage was under child health plus because she didnt want to have to pay more for her child on her and her husbands policy.
ETA: To be honest, I dont know how they got away with it. I think the woman I worked with kept her maiden name and only worked p/t so she claimed her son as a dependent. Meanwhile they had a nice house in Syosset and she and her husband both drove mercedes.

My husband is an EMT, he has people who call 911 as a taxi.
He was working OT one Sunday and they got a call for chest pains, they go lights and sirens to the address and there is a woman sitting outside in her Sunday clothes and she called b/c she wanted to go to the hospital to visit someone.
He also says he sees plenty of people who take their Medicaid cards out of the Vuitton bags

yes...and I just feel compelled to reiterate...it is NOT only illegal (actually its mostly NOT illegals) taking adavantage in this way.
and unless you outright ask for immigration status, it is just conjecture to even believe that those you encounter are, in fact, illegal.
