Not that it wouldn't have happened but maybe the staff would have been better trained. I just think you never know.....Chat Icon

What do you mean by "properly licensed"? Its either the daycare is licensed or not...right?

I think these tradegies can happen anywhere, even in your own home. I mean kids are so quick that if you're not looking for one sec anything can happen.

I think it didn't matter if they were licensed or not.

It could have happen at home too Chat Icon

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care

I think it could have happened anywhere. The staff was trained in CPR.. so I am not sure what more they could have done if they were licensed.

Even licensed places have violations and little things that aren't always 'right'.

It was a horrible, horrible tragedy.. the only thing that could have/should have been done differently was that the staff could have been more careful about keeping undesirable items out of reach.

But could have/should have..Chat Icon

ETA: I still only used licensed facilities with my kids. I like the idea of them being accountable at least to some degree. It doesn't prevent tragedies.. especially not something as unexpected and unusual as this.. but it certainly can't hurt.

You hit the nail on the head!
We all leave our pocketbooks, bags etc... laying around. Maybe this will bring some more awareness if the real issue was presented. Her bag was out and the baby got the carrot. The licensure would have ONLY encouraged the daycare to not leave things around. Just bc someone is licensed doesnt mean they listen to rules any better.

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care

my friend was actually one of the assistants in that class with that little girl....and i sincerely believe by what she told me about the bag of carrots being out -- that it was just a tragic accident. it could happen in your own home or at the daycare or anywhere.

the teacher and assistants of that class are beating themselves over it, more than we can possibly know.

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care

This was not someone who was trying to hurt a child at all, license or not I highly doubt there is a written rule "No baby carrots anyway a child can reach".
it is a tragic, horrible accident, They happen every day which is why I basically live in fear all the time.

I also wanted to add, it could have been anything that a chilld can choke on.
The child could have gotten their hands on a quarter or something
I mean think about it, how many things are in your pocketbook that I child could choke on Chat Icon

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care

I hate the spin that the media is portraying that the staff there was evil, etc. I'm sure that no one involved in this case wanted to cause any intentional harm to any child, let alone a co-worker's child. I know the mother is grieving and her emotions are raw but I found her story in Newsday today hard to believe that if her classroom was next door to her childs, that she wasn't aware of the emergency going on next door. We've had instances of emergencies within my company and it seems like EVERYONE knows what's happening within minutes. Granted, someone should have approached her immediately. I just can't imagine being unaware of Police activity, sirens, etc. occuring in the room next door and not following up on it.

No. I think accidents (however tragic) can happen anywhere.

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care

I think this terrible thing could have happened anywhere-daycare, homecare, your house. It is just so terrible.

I do understand the parents desire to strike out at the facility-I would imagine that at time like this you look for anything, anyone to blame.

It is so sad.

I don't think the lack of license had anything to do with it. Chat Icon

I believe they had a license for older kids but not toddlers.

I think bad teachers are bad teachers. 3 Adult teachers in the room, and not one saw her get the bag of carrots, open them, and take a bite?????. Chat Icon
