Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care
Reading the article ...I started crying they didn't tell her until the paramedics took the girl to the hospital..She didn't even get to ride with her to the hospital..It was in the paper today..
Be prepared to cry if you read it..The situation is so SAD..I can't stop thinking about that poor family!

There is really something wrong with that. I'm glad they lost their license. Disgusting.

I think it didn't matter if they were licensed or not.
It could have happen at home too

You hit the nail on the head! We all leave our pocketbooks, bags etc... laying around. Maybe this will bring some more awareness if the real issue was presented. Her bag was out and the baby got the carrot. The licensure would have ONLY encouraged the daycare to not leave things around. Just bc someone is licensed doesnt mean they listen to rules any better.
I do not leave my bag lying around and neither do the people who care for DS. My MIL carries medications in her bag and she knows that I do not want her bag lying around when she is watching my son. This would be a violation if inspectors showed up to daycare. Do I think that the lack of a license caused the death? Probably not but it did not help.

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care
I have heard people say places (Daycares) licensed are more careful with pocketbooks etc. They have to be up at times on hangers etc.. They have specific guidelines to follow.. Therefore the staff would have it in their mind to be more careful if they were being watched.. That school has been there since the 50's why wouldn't they just get licensed...Yes, it was an accident ...but if they were trying to get away with not being licensed then what else are they trying to get away with..Yes, accidents happen but when you are working with a classroom of two year old you MUST be extremely careful with leaving your belongings around!! This was preventable if the person was more careful which is so upsetting. Someone wasn't watching that little girl if she had enough time to go into the bag, etc!!!!

From what I read they are licensed for infants and the owner "didn't realize" they needed a different license for other age groups.
Whether or not I believe that they didn't know they needed a different license, I would think that if they are licensed for infants, they are subject to inspections, etc so I they are probably adhering to the rules already and this is just a freak accident or human error/carelessness. In which case, I don't think being fully licensed would have helped the situation. Terrible, just terrible.

I don't believe it would have made a difference if they were properly licensed or not but maybe it could have been prevented if procedures were properly followed. (like locking up staff bags) It's a terrible thing.

I think it could have happened anywhere. Being licensed has nothing to do with it. it could have happened in your own home and that's the scary part of it.

Re: i have a question about the girl that choked on a carrot at day care
the issue also is that at licensed facilities they need to adhere to ocfs guidelines on what to serve children. raw carrots in a daycare facility is not recommended, along with potato chips, hot dogs, grapes, peanut butter, popcorn and a few others that i cant think of at this moment.
but i do agreet this was a sensless accident.

Honestly I don't think so. I mean, those tragedies can happen anywhere
I agree, it has nothing to do with being licensed or not

my friend was actually one of the assistants in that class with that little girl....and i sincerely believe by what she told me about the bag of carrots being out -- that it was just a tragic accident. it could happen in your own home or at the daycare or anywhere.
the teacher and assistants of that class are beating themselves over it, more than we can possibly know.
I am sure they are distraught....such a tragedy and so many are affected
