I have no friends-UPDATE AT TOP!
So I moved to Atlanta 2 months ago and have one friend. She works in my SO's office, not for him so we were able to be friends. So that's great...but I am so lonely for girlfriends to do things with...especially since my SO travels a few days a week for work.
So I joined Team In Training, a running team to train for another marathon this coming spring. Great, but now I actually have to meet people I have not had to do this in a long time and at the last run I was pathetic...it felt like most people knew someone and I stood there like an idiot by myself. Now tonight is another run, and my mentor on the team is out of the country...haven't met her yet but she knows my situation and told me I should go for pizza with a few of the girls and said to look for Angela.
Now this was very nice of her but do I really seek Angela out? I mean I really don't want to even go...but I should force myself right? I already emailed Angela a question today so she knows my name...I need some pushing I guess.
Also if anyone knows anyone in Atlanta or has any other suggestions for meeting people...i would be very grateful!
ETA: Work friends are not an option...i transferred down here and the office I work in only a few days a week is all programmers who don't talk to me....I swear its them not me!
Thanks for the support! ______________________________
Thanks again for all the responses. I really appreciate every single one of them.
So I went to the run yesterday and I wasn't the idiot standing alone this time
I got to talking to one of the girls who is actually the captain of one of the teams and she was really nice...I actually ran with her and another few girls. Through her I was introduced to a few others and eventually met Angela. Angela was looking for me and was very nice! I stayed and had pizza with a bunch of the people and it was fun...not the time of my life but definitely a great first step to getting to know these people better....
So at least I left not feeling socially defective...and have a few familiar faces to look for at Saturdays run. I also didn't realize how prestigious the NYC marathon is...so when they asked if I ran any they were all so interested in my experience and impressed...so yea...I felt a little like a rockstar too!

I don't know anyone in Atlanta...but I think what you're doing is a great start. I would seek Angela out....you have nothing to lose! Don't be so nervous, it'll be ok.

I think you're doing a good thing by going to this training GTG. I would definitely seek out Angela just to put a face to the name... and tell her that. You just want to introduce yourself and put a face to the name.... it might snowball into a conversation.
Do you work? Perhaps getting a p/t job will help you meet people. Have you considered volunteering?
This website might link you to other opportunites to meet people. Good luck!!!!!

You should go to the run tonight - there's a good chance the leader told Angela to seek you out as well!
What about other types of classes? There maybe some adult education classes starting for the winter session in January. The local schools by me have things like photography, language, cooking, etc.

I would look for her! Team in training is a great program to meeting people. I used to work for LLS and I have done a few event myself and I know that many people became great friends bc of this program.

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I completely understand how you feel. My BFF moved to Charlotte with her FH three years ago and had the same issue. She worked in a very small satellite office with two older women so meeting lady friends at work was not an option.
I know this might sound a little crazy but she posted an ad on Craigs list just explaining her situation and that she was looking for female friends to drink, eat, shop with. Believe it or not, she met about 5 or 6 really good friends that way.
Atlanta, like Charlotte is an "implant" city. There are many people in your situation down there and are dieing to meet friends.
The running club is a really good start!!
Good luck!!

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I don't have any advice for you!
but it sounds like you are really trying to put your self out there. It will happen! You will make tons of friends very soon!
Go to the Run! and introduce your self to Angela and say that your mentor recommended you to meet her. If you give her a compliment, your sure to make friends with her. it would work with me!
Good Luck!

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I don't know if your old High School does this, but ever 10 years we get an updated directory of alumni. On Saturday, I called someone I have not spoken to in 11 years. I left a vm and she actually called me back. We are going out for coffee as soon as I get to Charlotte. Yes, it was embarassing at first but it worked out well in the end.
As for Angela, even if she turns out not to be friendly you should still put forth the effort. If she is friendly, she could end up being a new friend.
I will check out my directory and see if anyone lives in Atlanta you can meet.

Alumni organizations are a great way to look - I know my college has one because a lot of people relocated down there after school.
I wonder if there are any other LIFers in Atlanta?

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
A friend of mine moved to Seattle & actually answered an ad on Craig's list for someone meet people.
That's a little too forward for me, but if someone can place an ad like that & someone else can answer it, you can seek out Angela!
If you feel weird just say it. "Hi I'm Robyn, I'm new. Do you guys know Angela?"
The first people you talk to may not be your new best friend but it will make it easier to meet people.
Another friend moved to Chicago & met up with a friend of a NY friend & they get along, but that girl is very busy & they don't see each other much, but she met that girl's friend & they are very close now. So, you never know.
Good luck!

I agree with this... Seek her out and do just this. Esp if you've already been emailing with her, this should be an easy entree (sp?) into conversation and it may lead to a friendship. Even if it doesn't - you will be happy you did it afterward
TNT is a great place to meet people. You could also see if there is a local running club in your area. They have them by me in DC and it is a great way to meet fellow runners who live near you.
Otherwise, some sort of fitness class might be another good way to meet people?
I think it will take some time to develop friendships there, but you are doing the right things. Keep it up!

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
Have you tried meetup.com?
I moved upstate and luckily I have a VERY social DH who is constantly filling up my calendar with events (actually I am more of a loner-type and my DH is way too social for me - if it's not one thing, it's another ).
I also brought small baked treats to some of my neighbors who looked nice and in our age group. It's bribery but it worked!

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I was going to suggest Craigslist...they have a forum specifically geared towards just meeting friends.
Good luck! I'm sure you'll have friends in no time (look how many LIF'ers are your "friends", even though we don't 'know-know' you )

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I met one of my closest friends at the gym of all places. She had just moved to Philly, didn't know anyone, so she picked me up at the gym one day (as she puts it ) - been close as ever for 5 years now.

The same thing happened to me when I moved to TN. The gym is a great place to meet people. Moving is hard! I've done two long distance moves. I think for me I had to realize I couldn't replace the friends I lost due to the move or other circumstances. Each person that comes into our lives will serve different purposes. I think it got a little easier once I stopped trying to replace people. Does that make sense? I think what you're doing is great. Give it time. I would say sometimes it can take a year or more to feel at home in a new place and make friends you feel comfortable with. Good luck!

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
I would definitely go to the running class and seek Angela out- but I have a feeling that she will be looking for you too. I would just ask the person who seems to be the leader if she's Angela and tell her you are the one she e-mailed.
I also second the gym and running as a way to meet people. I did a bootcamp in Central Park before I got pregnant and it turned out that out of 10 people in the class, I was friends in college with one of them and the other was my old roomate's friend.

Re: I have no friends...advice please!
My best advice for meeting people is if you see a group of people who look like they are having a great conversation, walk over and introduce yourself. Get involved in the conversation and have a nice chat! Make stuff up, it doesn't have to be all the truth...just get in there talking to people Make them wonder where the heck you just came from, and how they got along without you!
So just find something to talk about! Also, don't be afraid to ask for someones phone number if you get along with them, ask for their cell, send them a text with some info that you said you would get them or something like that. That always works for me.
Remember, I moved to another country 8 years ago...I knew NO ONE and I stood out from the crowd because I was American...so stand out as a New Yorker!
