I have the world's largest cold sore
I have tried every single remedy but this one came out while I was asleep last night. I get them way too often. I used to find that taking Lysine was a great preventative measure but it just doesn't work well anymore. I just feel like complaining. I feel very tired and viral when I have them. My doctor always tells me to be glad I only have the "upstairs" form of this illness . I can say that I would be unhappy if I had it elsewhere but that does not make me feel better while I am battling a cold sore (and the cold sore is winning--I'm going to have a scar for a while from this one).

Re: I have the world's largest cold sore
I am VERY prone to canker sores... Thankfully I don't get them TOO much anymore, but I had a TERRIBLE one back in September! I ultimately ended up going to my dr who prescribed an antiviral ointment to get rid of it. It was SO painful and lasted about 3 weeks. I seriously thought it was never going to go away!
Good luck with yours! I almost ALWAYS recommend Pyroxel to people with a lousy canker sore. DH always has luck with it and I sometimes do... though the last one I just mentioned was just so stubborn, that only the antiviral did the trick. The Peroxyl just numbed it for 5 mins It's a mouth wash found in the dental section if you are interested.... (usually) it works like a dream!
I know what you mean about feeling tired and viral. I totally get that feeling when I get them. Just a general "sick" feeling from being in nonstop pain.
ETA: WOOPS! Just realized you meant "COLD sore" ... which is different from canker sores...
Regardless, I hope you feel better soon!!!

Re: I have the world's largest cold sore
My DH gets cold sores periodically and has a prescription for Valtrex (pills) --which works well for him. The minute he feels one coming on he starts to take it and it seems to lessen the severity and duration of it. Maybe you can try this??

Been there & done that. Ok, just kidding w/sounding so obnoxious. Valtrex does work really well but I have a side effect of terrible headaches from it. This time I just was not on time because the cold sore came on overnight. I think that having had so many cold sores has killed some nerve endings. I no longer get the tingling feeling as a warning sign that I am getting one. Does your husband get headaches from Valtrex?

My husband uses (& swears by) DMSO cream by Never An Outbreak.

Re: I have the world's largest cold sore
Thanks. I am probably going to order this AND ask my doctor for enough Valtrex to get me through the winter. One side of my face and lip are swollen today from this sore. It's a bad one.

Have you tried Zovirax? I swear it keeps them from truly developing into blisters.

I have the cream and it is usually pretty good but it didn't work this time. I heard there is a pill form now. I wonder if it won't give me headaches like Valtrex. I have never had a cold sore get this swollen. I have swollen glands, too but I get that a lot of the time. I have a slight fever also.

Re: I have the world's largest cold sore
I find the Zovirax gets to oily on my lip so I started using neosporin with pain relief and that seems to help with the pain.. but mine take about a week to go away bc I tend to break out in clusters every so often when I am run down..

PLEASE, only use pharamceutical grade DMSO (99.9% pure) for human use -- that is only avaialble with a prescription. 99% pure is NOT the same thing as 99.9% pure (pharma grade).
DMSO in higher concentrations and/or impure forms can be extremely dangerous for humans.

Is that the name I ask for it by, just DMSO? This cold sore is so bad that even when I start to feel better I will feel like I have to hide out. I have walked around with cold sores before but this is one that will surely scare people!

Yes, it is just called DMSO. I would not use any OTC version of it unless your doctor specifically tells you, too.
Not that human and horse labeled things are the same, but we are ALWAYS warned strongly by our vets to only apply DMSO to horses while wearing gloves... It's very powerful stuff, so make sure what you are using is appropriate. Definitely go with your doc on this one, whether he tells you to use a specific OTC version (unlikely) or - more likely - gives you the prescription stuff.
