I have to take 12 mo old DS for bloodwork (routine) tomorrow at quest and I am nervous...any advice?
It's the CBC/lead test and I called to make the appt and they said they take it from the arm - now i am worried for two reasons - first, i know i have read on here how hard and painful it can b/c to take blood from an baby and second, ds is so squirmy and NOT cooperative in the dr.'s office i can't imagine how we will hold him down and i am cringing just thinking about it
Does anyone have any advice? Is there someplace better than quest I can go? or am i just making a big deal out of nothing? TIA!

We've been to two different quests and they are very good with kids.
They will have two techs do it, one to hold the arm still and the other to take the blood.
You just get to hold him in your lap to comfort him.
Logan was more interested then hurt, he cried a little when the prick came, but then was fine.

We used a doll and a book to distract DD. She cried after but it was already done! Good Luck Mamma!

I took my son to quest in babylon, and they actually were very good. I waited until he was 15 months, because I was so nervous about it. They were really good at distracting him and making him laugh in the beginning, so that he felt comfortable. The lady we first saw said that she didn't think she could find a good vein, so she called someone else in to help her. I decided that I would only let them try 2 times (maybe even just once, but no more than twice) and then I was going to have then stop and walk out of there. Thank god she got it in the first try, and honestly, it went really quickly. The thing that hurt the most (and it moreso ****** him off) was the blue thing that they tie around your arm to get the vein to come out (I just had it done to myself yesterday, and it is really uncomfortable).
That all being said, originally I wanted to take him to the blood center at Good Sam. I have heard that they are fabulous. We actually went there to be told that my insurance has a contract with quest, and that's the only place that could draw blood without being charged. I was so upset, but in the end I was happy with quest.
to Mommy, because this is so hard for us!

Do you know if I can have this done at North Shore or LIJ? Do you think they are better than quest?
I like the idea of leaving - I'm giving them once! I'm literally sick about this!!!! We were given the script at his 9mo visit and now here we are at 12 mo and his appt is this week! Nothing like leaving it to the last minute right

I would call up and ask them if they do it. I am not sure. But for some reason, I felt more comfortable having it done at the hospital. I don't know why, but I just thought they would be better?

Re: I have to take 12 mo old DS for bloodwork (routine) tomorrow at quest and I am nervous...any advice?
I brought Lily not too long ago and the tech couldn't find a vein, so she wouldn't try to get the blood. She didn't want to torture her for something that could wait a little while. I spoke to Lily's doctor about it and she said it was fine to wait, and to try again in about a month. So I might take a day off one day soon for a Lily & Mommy day, and go have it done.

Ladies thanks so much for all the advice. We went this morning, the woman who took the blood was WONDERFUL! DS did great - it was all over in less than a few minutes. Thanks again
