I heard back about the IVF grant..
So today I get a letter in the mail that states that the grant is expired and won't be available again until July or as late as September. I can live with that. But they break down your portion of what you have to come up with out of pocket...$9200.00
I feel so defeated right now. We bought a home last year and put all of our savings into this house, and I just don't think that we can do this. Had I known last year what I know now, well, it would be a different outcome, but I can't change the past. I bought this house to fill it up with children (or at least one), and I look around and just think, Irony at it's best.
Iui #4 isn't over yet, but I'm not stupid...it's IUI #4!!
Hopeless doesn't even BEGIN to express how I feel right now.

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
The average out of pocket IVF, nor including meds is around 10,000 in the city, so the grant is 800?
That doesn't make any sense to me at all!

If it is at NSUH what they do is take your joint gross income and work it out on a percentage of that. We paid considerably less than that, but still in the thousands. Spitzer is cutting all the funding which is why they are not giving out new grants until September at the earliest. But I don't understand why it would only be $800. If you pay in full out of pocket it is approx. $13k at NSUH (at least that's what my original paperwork stated)

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
13K is the reduced fee that they give people who pay themselves and I dont believe that includes meds.
for what you are going through

I am so sorry.
My clinic was not that expensive, and they let you make out a payment plan over a few months....
We can thank Mr. Spitzer for the grant cuts!

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
This is the breakdown: Treatment is $12K Assisted hatching-$676.00 and this I don't understand: NYS Demonstraion Infertility Project (Assestment)-$2K
A total of almost $15K
Some of you paid $10K...that's worth changing doctors for.
Am I getting cheated for the most important $$ we may be spending in our lives??????????

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
I paid out of pocket about $7200 or a little more at NSUH as part of the grant and let me tell you we barely make it as it is on our salaries...
And we had to borrow thaht $7200 from my Mothers 401K...because we dont have that type of savings or extra money..so we are paying it back with a whole lot of interest.
We looked into loans, etc before we settled on what we did, b/c we wanted it so badly...
I KNOW how you feel...we paid DOUBLE our budget for our wedding, and when I think of all the thousands of dollars we spent for one day , that we could have used....BUT...we cant think back, Now you have to think of a way to go forward, and you will!
It can be done, but I understand all too well how hard finacially it is..AND after I paid for it, I found out how much less the IVF costs elsewhere, But its not that much less.
Places like Kara's was cheaper, but didnt include meds..and I was on the highest dosage of stims, so my meds would have run me $4k-$5K easily Out of pocket...
Hang in there, Where theres a will theres a way....Some people are not even eligible for the grant , so I considered myself lucky I got what I did....

I don't have advice on the grant issue since I'm not at that point (but will probably be in 2 years).
I'm crying as I type this because this is exactly what happened to us. Well, not exactly, but you know what I mean. We did the wedding, bought the house, all to get ready for the lots and lots of babies...to do it "right"...and then life reared its ironic head and it all turned upside down. I hate irony.
Don't give in to the hopelessness. You WILL get your BFP. God bless you...may your most treasured dreams come true soon!!!

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
It's all about priorities and what you can and can't do. We bought our house last year and like you, used all our savings. So, when the IUI's didn't work we had to wait over a year to do IVF. Now, I may be too old for PG, but I couldn't do it a year ago financially.

That's one of the hardest parts for me. Me and DH got all our 'ducks in a row' and wanted to do everything the right way and not just 'wing it' as we hear so many people do (love the line from pregnant or ttc people - are you ever financially ready for a baby. Um, yes, and we were - very ready.) We bought the house, have good jobs, built up savings, etc., and 28 mos. later, still no baby. We used to talk about the bedrooms as the nurseries, now they are just guest rooms. It just stinks. I guess we just all need hope that this battle is for the most incredible prize and to keep pushing forward.

I don't know what clinic you are at, but yes there are places out there that will cost you less and are excellent. If you have ANY insurance, my clinic gets as much as possible from them for as I said office visits, u/s, etc...
I couldn't even be CONSIDERED for the grant.

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
I'm so sorry, Suzy.
First of all, I want you to take this Gonal-F I have. I think I might have enough for the entire cycle for you. I have 3 pens! I think they are 900 IU or whatever that is. Just take them. And use them. They are VERY expensive and are sitting in my fridge rotting!
As much as this might suck, can you take out a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) on your house? It's a loan against the value of your house. It might be worth investigating and they have 20 year fixed loans for them. $10,000 over 20 years at an 8.05% interest rate will be a very small payment, and if you wanted to you can pay it back quicker without penalty.
Where there is a will, there's a way. Just try to come up with every possible alternative.
FM me if you need anything

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
Keep your chin up, like others have said, where there's a will, there's a way.
As you know, the grant cost share is assessed on a sliding scale. I am on my second and final grant at a clinic in NYC and managed to use my tax return (wasting another year, at my age ) to be able to afford the cost share! My first grant attempt was on LI.
I would suggest you apply to all the clinics that have the grant and see what the cost share to you would be. Some of them are sooo disorganized (like NSUH), but most will respond and let you know.
Good luck!

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
Thanks for all of the encourgagement and kind words.
So, I'm not pg on my 4th iui and have decided not to continue with iui's.
I will wait until I can afford to do ivf. At this point it's my best and only real chance of having a baby.
I do have a question for those who had to pay out of pocket. Did your Dr. reduce what you owed if you got the meds on your own, or is it the "one set price" and that's it.
I trying to see if I can get the meds on my own, then my final out of pocket to them would be seriously reduced.
Also, will they tell me ahead of time what meds I'll need so that I can try to get them on my own?
Today is a bad day. I also found out that a good friend of mine is pg, and I found out thru someone else. She wouldn't even tell me herself. What did she think, that I would wish bad things on her? I mean, I hate it that some people approach you like you're made of paper or something and that you'll crumble over the slightest bit of news. Whatever......

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
I had to get my meds from the pharmacy. The drs did not charge me for them.
There is a possibility that some of the sonograms will be picked up by your insurace carrier even if you don't have IF coverage.
Also, many women here have extra meds and are willing to donate them to others!

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
I am sorry to hear about the grant...
I also applied (just send my application with the required documents) to Cornell where I am a patient....The lady also told me that the grant is closed for the upcoming June-July cycles....We will need to wait until the September one..which is ok...I am willing to wait...
I will find out in the next week or so if we got accepted...I am praying that we will get accepted....A single cycle at Cornell is about $15K plus the cost of meds...My insurance doesn't cover any costs related to IUI & IVF which will be all out of pocket....The grant will cover 2 IVFs so I am really hoping that we get accepted......do you know how they came up with the $9200 figure?? why is it so much??
Good luck to you!

Re: I heard back about the IVF grant..
I know at NSUH it costs about $13K, I have to double check to see if that includes meds. We will be applying for the grant but not sure if we will get it now, since Don got a big raise last month.
Good Luck to you!!!

It is based on a graduated scale based on your combined gross income level. The less you make, the more they will give you.
